Characterizing the enemy as brutes/racist caricatures was a thing in WW1. Deutschland didn't pull any punches either. Look at this heinous poo poo:

I don't think it's racist at all, really, it's just old fashioned nationalism. Germany is an irrational, immoral, warlike animal that needs to be put down.

Its possibly worth noting that the ape represents "Germany", rather than "A German". There would seem to be a distinction between saying "These people are apes" and "This nation is an ape", but that could be just me. Edit: What the hell thread am I even in? Right, it's not inciting racial animus, just nationalist fervor.

I realize that IMDB user ratings are not the most respected barometer of film quality, but Tammy is currently at 4.6. It's pretty drat rare for a new movie to score below a 7 on opening weekend, especially since that's when the people who are most pumped up, and therefore likely to overrate a movie go see it.

I'm annoyed that people's takeaway from Melissa McCarthy's success is "She can open a movie and people won't even mind that she's fat!" as opposed to "I guess weight doesn't matter as much for starring roles."

Coworker reviews: One watched the first half hour, walked out and said "they could fast forward the movie and I wouldn't have missed anything". The second came in to watch it and left after a hour, saying he fell asleep after the first fifteen minutes and if he's gonna nap he might as well be comfy in his bed. General reviews aren't so good either.

She was good in Bridesmaids but it would be cool if she did something at least mildly subversive like Rebel Wilson in Pain & Gain in between all the wacky fat lady leading roles.

What was subversive about Rebel Wilson in Pain & Gain?
|
# ? Jul 7, 2014 13:15 |

There wasn't anything particularly subversive about Rebel Wilson in Pain and Gain. Her character was funny though. I will say she was presented as somewhat sexy and sultry, if that's what you mean by her being subversive since normally a woman of that size is not presented that way. But Rebel Wilson is very pretty and having a foreign accent gets you halfway to sultry already so I don't know how much of that was a subversive presentation or how much was just Rebel being Rebel.

She was definitely not presented as sexy and sultry. Her sexuality is played as comedy.

Things would be so much better if she'd at least go back to her Gilmore Girls weight, and refuse to be typecast as whatever she's been getting for the last few years.

She's not really being typecast per se, she handpicks most of her projects and produces and writes on a good deal of them. So she's typecasting herself. Also its pretty terrible to tell an actor they need to drop to X weight. Clearly even though we don't like her movies, they're successful and she doesn't need to do anything.

I honestly don't even understand the fawning that goes on over Rebel Wilson, I hadn't heard of her before trailers for Pitch Perfect when they were like "and Rebel Wilson!" I mean, I gathered she had a part in Bridesmaids, and she's fat, so fat acceptance bloggers? I mean everything I've seen of her has totally fallen flat for me. I just don't get it.

I believe the reason that Jonah Hill has said why he's gone to a kind of inbetween weight, where he's not as fat as he used to be but not as skinny as he could be, was because he was having problem getting work skinny.
