Where do academic pieces/texts with multiple authors fall? Do I need to achieve a certain ratio of ethnicity/sexual orientation for it to be kosher? Also this Goosebumps-knockoff teen novel claims to have been written by a monster, does it get a pass?

I love IJ and DFW but the two short ebonics chapters in the first 200 pages are soooo loving bad and awful. I always recommend skipping them.

This seems like an interesting thing to do and may result in seeing some different perspectives, so if people want to do it that's fine, but the funny part is to pretend doing this personally is some kind of politically meaningful/revolutionary action.

I read Oryx and Crake, it was obnoxious. You spend the whole drat time with this loser who wants to gently caress a girl he saw in some child porn on the internet, and then in the last like, 45 pages you find out that interesting things were happening fifty feet to the left that you didn't get to see. Who wants to read about a crazy brilliant scientist trying to engineer a race of perfect people, when you could be reading about a boring guy being sad after sex.

Yeah, she's not a good author, but somehow she's an even worse poet.

But the cishet honky mans' opinion is the only one that matters, so challenge denied.

Real talk: I am not a bigot but reading about gay sex holds just about as much interest for me as gsy porn. None. I don't care how gay or female the author is, graphic depictions of gays railing each other kinda grosses me out. If they are just a couple doing interesting protagonist things I'm ok. Juliette McKinna's Thief's Gamble is what I mean.

Because every time I tried to get through a magazine, I would come across stories that I didn't enjoy or that I actively hated or that offended me so much I rage-quit the issue. Go through enough of that, and you start to resist the idea of reading at all.

Then I thought: What if I only read stories by a certain type of author? Instead of reading everything, I would only look at stories by women or people of color or LGBT writers. Essentially: no straight, cis, white males.

Cutting that one demographic out of my reading list greatly improved my enjoyment of reading short stories. That's not to say I didn't come across bad stories or offensive stuff in stories or other things that turned me off. I did. But I came across this stuff far less than I did previously.
