I just looked at the installation manual and you shouldn't have to cut power. You just have to take the panel cover off. The CT's clip over the mains cables to measure current just like a clamp-on amp meter. It will require adding a 120v breaker to power the device, unless you double it with another circuit (assuming the breaker is designed to allow 2 conductors).

However it is not a bad idea to cut power, under the newest osha regs an electrician would have to wear PPE while performing this task in an energized panel.

I'd probably feel safer cutting power, if I'm adding a breaker, unless I have an insulated screwdriver. There's actually an open knockout in my panel for a single pole breaker, so that would be easy enough to do (then remove once I move out.. or just leave in there, the only ones labeled are the 2 pole breakers anyway).

Don't the newest OSHA regs require PPE to even turn a single pole 120V 15A breaker on or off now?

Motronic posted:

It does not need to be "connected." All of these systems use inductive coils. You simply snap one around each phase.

...and also inside of that very panel. You need to take the cover off, just like when you're installing a breaker.

I'd suggest you don't do this. Hire an electrician.

I've been inside breaker panels several times and I'm not bothered at all by single phase residential panels, I just don't like to do it unless I'm using insulated tools (which I don't own anymore - the best I could do is wrap everything in a few layers of the Super 88 roll of tape I have here). I mentioned everything was in the walls after someone asked why I didn't just connect the device to the wires going to the panel - it's common in some areas (UK) to have feeder wires exposed. The fact that my main breaker is outside is both a good thing and a curse. It means once it's shut off, the entire panel is completely dead, including the feeders. But it means unless I throw a padlock on the box it's in, someone could turn it back on (highly unlikely, but possible). Of course, by the time I can afford that metering device (and a breaker), my lease will probably be up anyway, and I don't plan to stay in this exact apartment (but will probably stay on the property).

It also means in a worst case scenario, first responders can kill the entire building pretty quickly without having to yank meters or get the power company involved, or break anything more than a padlock, since all 13 meters (12 apartments + building lighting/fire alarm/sprinkler controller power) are in a row, with main breakers under each meter.

Now that I think about it... it may only be the house power box that had a lock. :iiam:

Guessing it didn't like the inrush of all those compressors trying to start over and over. :v: It was an impressive fireball, I'm really glad nobody was near it.

Siochain posted:

Just turn it off? Not being a jackass here - I had to do the same, since our Hydro in Ontario is loving atrocious. With a decent SSD (or any SSD) booting up is almost as fast as coming out of sleep.

I set it to hibernate after an hour, after trying to get sleep working properly for way too long. I tried to enable sleep, but it refuses to come out of sleep. Have to clear the CMOS UEFI to get it to even power back up. :sigh: The issue with turning it off is I have Plex running on it, streaming to both TVs in the apartment. I tend to fall asleep watching a movie. At least this way, the PC will hibernate

And yeah it boots quick; it has a Samsung 840 EVO in it, it's about 10 seconds from pressing the power button to typing in my password. My laptop takes considerably longer to boot (about 30 seconds), but has a very old Intel SSD in it (300 series), and a low power i5, while this has a nice quick i5-2500k.

I think what's breaking sleep on my desktop is the fact that it has a beta UEFI on it. The ONLY version of UEFI that Gigabyte ever released for this board. I tried to downgrade it back to the last BIOS last night (which was actually released this year, vs 2013 for the UEFI), but it won't let me flash it. I'm sure there's a way to do it, but I don't want to risk bricking my main PC. The board's also getting downright flaky about booting now - it seems to come out of hibernation reliably (even with a WoL packet), but a cold boot, even on "defaults" and "optimized defaults" seems to have a 20/80 chance of booting/failing on the first try, so I'll probably wind up finally building a new PC sometime next year. Just showing its age I guess. I know with the last BIOS I had on it, sleep worked fine, but it won't let me downgrade with the Gigabyte-sanctioned tools.

I may sperg out and pull it apart and see if there's anything obviously wrong in the next day or two, it needs a good cleaning anyway. It never BSOD's, so I think it's just the UEFI being a piece of poo poo.

If im not mistaken the issue with stab-lok is that the breakers were a bit reluctant to trip out. To the point they would loving ignite the wiring in your walls before tripping out.

Correct, but nowhere NEAR as bad as Zinsco. My air conditioner breaker has tripped several times, though they've since replaced the breaker. One apartment I lived in with Stab Loks also had half the breakers tripped when I came home from work after a bad storm (along with a bit of smoke in the air). Turns out every breaker that tripped had a surge protector plugged into the circuit that self destructed after a nearby lightning strike. Except for one - the microwave's dedicated circuit, which didn't have a surge protector of any kind. :sigh: Tried to reset that breaker and heard a loud buzzing from both the kitchen and breaker for a split second... then the breaker tripped before I'd even removed my hand from it.

Only damage was to the surge protectors, the microwave, my DSL modem, and the network card in my PC. Somehow my router survived. Oh yeah.. some scorched carpet where the surge protectors were, and a dead UPS.

I had a dead short in a light fixture in an apartment with Zinsco breakers. The switch on the wall had smoke pouring out of it pretty quickly, light fixture was on fire with sparks pouring out. Breaker never tripped, I had to turn off the breaker to stop the fireworks (and did so with a broom handle).

TWC was upfront that the cost would go up after 12 months, yes, and that it would go up again after the next 12 months to the "current full retail" price. What they would not tell you was the actual, full, retail, non-discounted price, even if you asked. Checked on the web when I was looking at switching months ago, before the sale to Charter.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't know it would go up again after another 12 months. They did mention that I could always call in when it went up and try to see if I could get a better deal again.

The retail price list is pretty easy to find on the new Spectrum website, at least. It looks like full retail for the base internet package (in DFW) is $69.99. :stonk:

It tastes like drinking a wooden ash tray. Try a speyside scotch from the south of scotland instead. Balvenie Doublewood is a really smooth speyside with kind of a fruity whisky taste up front with a little smokey peaty aftertaste. Around the same price as the Laphroaig, but much better tasting if you don't like the super smokey peaty islay scotches.

Edit: The balvenie is finished in a sherry cask and isn't malted over a peat fire for anywhere near as long, so it'll still have those smokey scotch tastes, but blended with nice fruity sherry tastes and vanilla from the bourbon barrels.

Actually, I checked and what I drank was the Laphroaig 10 year. I'd try the quarter cask if offered, but wouldn't buy it myself after experiencing their other offerings. And he asked for a scotch that went easy on the smoke, I'd say an islay is likely not the answer given they are mostly known for strong, smokey scotches. :colbert:

Good to know. The Christmas party I was at took forever to pick up, and I was just drinking gin nonstop to make it more fun since I wasn't driving this time.
It's just loving weird, I'm partying with Art Students that are 3-4 years younger and I feel so old and young at the same time because they're just so boring. They drink almost exclusively beer, they play the most boring drinking games, and they even have boring taste in music. I'm an older, bio major, I should be the wet blanket, but younger Art Students are lame as poo poo and I have more fun partying with parole officers and programmers than with artists.
I mean, my friend.... was.

I ran an illegal bar (lost almost $1k of my own money in 4 months since we would always get hosed up and give away free drinks to everyone who came in) when I was 18. We had raves, we had themed parties, paint parties, regular bar nights, karaoke, all kinds of fun poo poo every night we could, but these juniors in college can't organize a party well enough to have a working stereo. They're so bad at throwing college parties that it makes me feel like I'm going to the same kind of party that I went to in high school, only this time I don't get to watch Army of Darkness and play beer pong all night. That's a crying shame if you ask me.

Also, I'm only a couple hundred short of buying that ugly little Fiat without selling my Civic first. I'm going to try to talk the guy down in the morning so I can get my hands on that beautiful rustbucket before there's snow sticking to the ground. For whatever reason, I am not getting any offers on my car now that it's back on the market, even though a month ago it was nonstop offers on a higher price.

Not trying to convince you to diy, but you don't have to touch anything hot with a screwdriver. The stab loks pop in.

-attach device power wire to breaker, and neutral wire to neutral bar.
-with breaker switched off, pop it into position.
-clip CTs around mains cables.
-reinstall cover and turn breaker on.

I don't know specifics about resi/commercial osha rules cause I'm utility, but requiring ppe to operate a breaker *with the panel cover in place* sounds really overbearing. An employee of an electrical contractor is probably required to wear their provided FR garments at all times while at work, though, cause that's easiest for the company to enforce.

As far as OSHA is concerned, anyone can flip a breaker. It's fuses that can't be changed by a non qualified employee.

And if your working inside live panels and boxes you need the moonsuit. An arc flash study is required for every panel in every facility that should list the proper PPE and safe distances.

:siren: *VENTING ABOUT SAMSUNG* :siren:

I got my S7 on June 10th 2016 from Costco and it was a pretty great phone. Unfortunately it did not last, just over two months of ownership my phone goes haywire on Sept 24th. The phone is overheating (hot to the touch and making a burning electronics smell), rebooting constantly, and won't turn on unless its plugged in. All is not well.

As I was travelling at the time of failure, I waited until I got back on Sept 30th to send it the phone for repair. It got sent in for warranty repair through Costco's phone kiosk.

Almost two months later, I finally received my phone back on Nov 17th. Samsung has diagnosed the issue as a faulty main board but has refused warranty on grounds that the repair cost would exceed the cost of the phone.

I had purchased the extended warranty when I got the phone so I was told by the staff at the Costco phone kiosk to open a claim with them and hopefully get it replaced. When I called, I was told that within the first year the carrier will have to send it in for repair as this failure should be covered under warranty. So on Nov 17th I went to a local Bell Canada store that had a repair center and sent in my phone once again.

Well, today, Dec 3rd, 2016 I received my phone back. Failure diagnosed as failed mainboard (same diagnosis as before) and this time the warranty is denied due to physical damage. The tiny, almost invisible under normal light crack in the corner is their reason for denying a faulty mainboard. I was quoted a $470 repair bill.

This seems beyond ridiculous on Samsung's part, and I'm at a little bit of a loss on how to proceed. Warranty denied by Samsung twice for different reasons, extended warranty through costco refused to replace due to it being a manufacturing issue, and if I do sent it for physical damage replacement then it might be denied to not having substantial enough physical damage to warrant replacement.

I've only been able to use my phone for a little over 2 months of the 6 months I've currently had it. :(

Lmao

Maybe as opt-in, but most stations/stores don't have it and they're not standard on the cards.

You know how credit cards are going to chip-and-PIN? Well, we've got the chip part, but not the PIN. So you have to stick the card in, wait like 10 seconds, then either nothing happens or you have to sign, just like a normal swipe card. So they've added awkwardness to the use of it without any actual improvement in security.

Tap to pay wasn't very usable in the us. Even many of the terminals that actually could accept it had it disabled.

I got fed up with Motorola's old Droid line, their batteries had the shortest life expectancy ever. It would be a year before I needed a new battery and even when they were new they only lasted 7-8 hours on a full charge. The technology has probably improved a lot in the last 7 years and Motorola should have actual battery life now, but I haven't looked at them since. My last Motorola was a Droid X1
