Oh but it does help, so so much. The GOP and right wing media have been cultivating these racists for a while now and it is about drat time that it comes out in public in an undeniable way instead of their usual dogwhistle code words.

Trump in the primaries is a long stretched out version of the moment where a lady said to McCain that she hated Obama because he is a Muslim.

Technically all he needed to do was to have most of it done in Mexico, then ship it over to the USA and have a few final touches done in order to say it was made in the USA. Granted that's a lot of extra money to spend for a label, even if you are cheating it.

Honestly I think this is him trying to see the new trend and cash in. Now that the gay thing is pretty much over, the republican machine knows we need a new 'other', and the professionals are trying to tap into it with immigrants. Ann Coulter tried with that adios book and because Trump has no idea how to be subtle he went out and did everything but yell "You drat dirty apes!"

Problem is, turning 'foreigners' into others needs a little more tact than gays, and we're seeing those with little tact try to navigate it.

In addition to the economy being poo poo a lot of states have rolled out mandatory E-Verify laws. It isn't perfect and there are ways around the laws (like the "independent contractor" loophole I noted earlier in the thread) but it does further limit the supply of jobs available to those without documentation. There is also evidence that it has boosted the wages of those who are here on valid visas which I'm sure pisses off our precious job creators.

The thing that truly baffles me about those "ugh, kids these days" things that keep cropping up is that people act like back in their day nobody ever got drunk and acted like a dumbass. We always have. We always will.

It's just typical, boring, generational shaming. Funnily enough, a lot of criticism aimed at millennials today takes the opposite tack - that they don't act like dumbasses *enough*, that they're too focused on careers and stability and skills, that they have no soul! Noted Serious Person In The Room David Brooks is an egregious purveyor of this idea.

Somehow, the millennial generation is the narcissistic, self-centered one, even though the Boomers elected Reagan!

For those who aren't aware, the National Review does consider itself the intellectual bastion of conservatism and also has a history of supporting apartheid and the "empty land" myth, segregation and literal white supremacy, "heritage not hate", forced tattooing of AIDS patients, and a history of hiring "bell curve" racists, white nationalists, and "never relaxers" (and then sometimes firing them for saying out loud in the 2000s what the National Review stopped saying out loud in the 1990s).

The sad thing is that they're still correct - they are the intellectual bastion of mainstream American conservatism because what passes for intellectual mainstream conservatism is writing like an imperialist or scientific racist from the 19th century instead of sounding like a fat radio clown.

All you really need to know is that Rich Lowry, the editor of the National Review and the guy who wrote that article defending Trump, once wrote this about Sarah Palin:

Rich Lowry posted:

I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.
