You turn a bit, glancing down the hallway toward the front door. “I didn’t see a patrol car out front. I thought they might offer to sit outside for a couple days.”

Anna’s lips tighten a bit. “They were here yesterday. They said they don’t feel that we are in further danger at the moment, but they have been doing extra patrols.”

“They just don’t want to waste resources on us, hermana,” says ‘Tonio, scooting onto a stool at the island. He nudges a second stool toward you, and after a moment of hesitation you sit while Anna bustles about the kitchen. “I think the cops think we instigated it. Victim blaming! I guess because we managed to defend ourselves that means we were loving asking for it.”

“‘Tonio!” Anna points her big knife at him, and he throws up his hands in defense.

“Sorry, we were freaking asking for it.” He rolls his eyes. “I mean, we needed the help from you guys, and I’m glad you showed, but I think the police would be more helpful if the house had gotten shot up or something.”

Anna looks out the window over the sink toward the backyard. “Thanks to Susie I was able to get the ice up in time. The police pulled several bullets out of it before it all melted.”

“That was amazing to watch, by the way,” you manage to interject into the siblings’ conversation. “The control you have over it, and to create something so big! I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Anna flushes pink, and waves away the praise. “It was nothing.”

“It was awesome,” agrees ‘Tonio. As an aside, to you, “My sister doesn’t like to ‘show off,’ but she should.

“Unwanted attention,” Anna says. “We are more than our special abilities.” She dumps the peppers into a hot pan with an onion she managed to slice when you weren’t paying attention, and the smell fills the room.

The conversation has flown past the work of the LAPD, and you try to find an easy way back to the points you wanted to make. “We are,” you simply agree. “And yet we still have them, and shouldn’t be targeted because of them. Gangs like the Locos making a move like this against a house full of kids is very worrying. And the police were late to the party.”

“She’s right,” says ‘Tonio. “We can’t depend on the cops to have our backs - at least not fast enough.”

Well, he’s practically doing your work for you. “Do you know why the Locos targeted you?”

Anna shakes her head, her back to you as she sautes the veggies. Antonio’s jaw bulges a bit, clenching his teeth as he looks toward the backyard.

“Really? I heard they had some sort of beef with one of the teens, or something,” you say. “I was hoping to find out what it was exactly. If it was like traded insults, or something similar, I’d say they’re overreacting, and that could mean they’ll be back for more, and soon. I don’t want to scare you, Anna, but -”

“It’s my fault,” grits out ‘Tonio, his fingers and arm beginning to turn greyish to match the counter they were resting on. “Some of their boys were bothering Ronnie and Aimee when they were walking home from the store a week or so ago. Aimee, she’s the - well anyway, they pushed her around a bit.”

Anna turns around, hands on her hips, while ‘Tonio is talking. It looks like she hasn’t heard this story before. “They didn’t want to tell you, Anna, and I promised I wouldn’t. Sorry, I know it was the wrong call. Anyway, I thought I could handle it myself. I got in the faces of some of the Locos at the basketball courts. I might have punched a couple of them.”

“‘Tonio!”

“Okay, okay, I did, but they had it coming. Think they can be racist pieces of poo poo to a kid just because she’s purple? I’d do it again,” he says. “Aimee can’t do it, so I did.”

So these guys tried to murder / kidnap a bunch of kids because of some heated words and mild to moderate punching? Definitely consider having Intercept play up that angle of this whole series of events while keeping the names of the victims confidential. I'm tempted to go with the Wildfire approach next time.

“Let me get this straight,” you say, “You punched a couple of them and they responded with an attempted drive-by and kidnapping?” You’d be incredulous if you weren’t already pretty sure of the answer.

“They don’t think we’re human,” growls Antonio. “You can justify a lot when you tell yourself it’s monstruos you’re going against.”

“Then the police definitely aren’t taking this seriously enough, Anna,” you say, concerned. “There’s no telling what they’ll do next now that they’ve gotten their noses bloodied.”

The back door opens and a couple younger teens tumble inside, laughing and talking. Susie follows, picking at a piece of lint on her cardigan. “Scott, Ronnie! Go wash up!” Anna shoos them out of the kitchen and you can hear them thundering up the stairs, still trading good natured insults. Your eyes linger on Susie, who seems to be staring at the wall. Antonio watches you, and when Susie blinks and continues walking to the dishwasher he catches your eye.

“You met Susie already?” he asks.

You nod. “I’ve met a few telepaths before, but it’s fascinating every time. No offense,” you add.

He grins. “Oh, little Susie isn’t a telepath,” but he can’t tell you any more before Anna is inviting you to stay for lunch, which you accept. It’s a raucous affair, and you can feel yourself loosening up a bit as the kids chat around the table, stuffing fajitas into their faces. You are loathe to return to your regularly scheduled diet of TV dinners and fast food after tasting Anna’s home cooking, and you are sure to compliment her on the meal.

Gracias,” she says. “We grow the veggies here - well it’s too early for peppers, but generally… the garden and other chores are part of the deal when they move in.”

“It’s really great what you are doing here, for them” you say, indicating the kids. “If we run into any kids that need help, would it be okay if we bring them to you? With funding, of course, for their care.”

“Please do,” she says, her eyes warm as she looks down the long table at the six teens she was giving shelter to. Susie hands Ronnie a napkin, which he ignores, and then the filling falls out of his fajita and into his lap. Exasperated, he takes the napkin, and Anna turns back to you. “I called this place Redención House, because it’s a place of second chances. And there is always room for one more.”

When the meal was over and you were saying good-bye, you slipped a card into Anna’s hand. “My number,” you say. “For emergencies. Please don’t hesitate if you need anything.”

“Of course, thank you,” she replies, and tucks it into her apron pocket. Anna watches you from the porch as you walk to your car, and you think you can see a little fear in her eyes as she looks down the street. You lift your arm in a wave, and she returns the gesture before heading back inside.

Next up, Eel's contacts and following up with Squib and the Boneyard.

If you have questions for Anna, or Antonio, or any of the kids, post them and we'll say you asked them over lunch.

Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies

You’ve been wanting to get more training for Squib, but haven’t found the right time, or place. Now that he’s on loan to the Barrio Boneyard, he’s been getting a workout. Big Mike wants to know exactly how he does it, how long it takes to charge something, how big he can make it, and how long before the item explodes. He puts Squib through his paces, and together Squib and the Bones have managed to hold onto their territory expansion. There haven’t been any battles, persay, except for the odd skirmish - plus the Boneyard is being very thorough to remove any Locos friendly drug pushers in the area.

All in all, you are pleased with how your partnership is turning out, and you think Big Mike is too. The Locos have been surprisingly quiet in the last week, and you would know because you tasked Vigilante with planting little cameras at key locations in their turf, as well as around the shelter on Banyon (just in case!). You’ve confirmed that the old strip mall is their base of operations, and you’ve seen Eightball and Stick coming in and out through the back, but Carlos is nowhere to be seen. The place has the look and feel of a beehive that someone’s about to kick a hole into. Not a lot of activity, but you get the sense that there’s a lot boiling under the surface.

The police had arrested and charged all the Locos they had rounded up on Banyon Street, the ones they could pin weapons charges onto were going to be in the system for a while. Intercept informs you that they plea bargained their way into shorter jail time, but it would still be a good while before those particular gang bangers were bothering Anna.

Eel has talked to the Mutant Lives Matters people and drawn in a couple new recruits. Digger is a huge guy, about six feet tall but his upper body is abnormally large and muscled. His arms are longer than average, ending in giant hands with spade-like claws tipping each finger. He fits the cliche of the gentle giant and is very soft spoken, despite his superhuman strength and endurance. For some reason he and Billy are getting along really well, probably bonding because they are both physically mutated.

Barbara Nolan, a self-titled Investigative Blogger, is the other newcomer to the Brotherhood. You’ve read her blog, and found it mostly full of speculative reports about the military trying to create their own super soldiers. What she lacks in writing experience she makes up for in enthusiasm, and she has a cousin who works in the LAPD forensics department. You don’t mind keeping her around if only to keep a line into the police department in case you need it later. Barbara has the ability to see beyond just the visible light spectrum, but confesses that much of what she can see when she switches her ‘filter’ is hard to understand when it gets too far in either direction from what’s known as visible light.

A. Intercept tells you he’s tracked down the SUV that you both saw at the mysterious meeting Vigilante had the night before the Locos attack. You decide to investigate it and find out who it belongs to (it’s registered to a holding company that leads into several layers of shell corporation).

B. The cameras around the Locos’ HQ have been picking up some interference. A black shape, coming and going, like a shadow with no one to cast them. You are intrigued, and want to hurt the Locos and take their stash anyway, so you decide to find out what’s going on.

C. The vote on the GDPA is growing ever closer, and public opinion has been swaying back and forth on the matter. With the hearts and minds campaign you’ve been running on the Internet the MLM group has arranged for a pro-mutant, anti-registration rally on the lawn outside the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. You decide to make sure the Brotherhood is there as well, to make sure it all runs smoothly.

D. Plan Happiest Place on Earth: everyone goes to Disneyland, even (or especially) the shelter kids, on the Brotherhood’s dime. You’ve done a good thing, time to have a celebration for a job well done. Nothing can go wrong. Everything is fiiiiine.

Question time is still open, but vote on your next course of action! If we do D, we can still do A, B, or C afterward, since everything will go smoothly and nothing will happen.

Also you can't throw broccoli at Susie's head because you're eating fajitas and don't have any broccoli. And what if she doesn't duck and you've just smacked her in the face with a vegetable?? :gonk: But yes, she is a precog of sorts.

You suspect that Susie is a precog, so you toss a bit of bell pepper at the back of her head to test your theory. She does not duck. Antonio bursts out laughing at the look on your face. "I thought -" you attempt to explain yourself, and he laughs more, picking the pepper out of her hair and throwing it in the garbage disposal. "Susie is a precog, but she doesn't see everything that is going to happen. Watch her face, she goes a bit glassy-eyed when she's having a vision. Usually its just a few minutes or moments ahead of time, but she's had some up to a day in advance. Nothing further out than that."

"Ever taken her to the casino?" you ask, the corners of your mouth twitching up.

He laughs harder, nearly choking on his meal as Anna punches his shoulder, and shakes his head.

It's a pleasure to meet all of you. Especially in such a fine settin' as this. Just need us some music an' a brawl an' we'll be set.
C > A > B: Put Eel in charge of Digger, Billy, and Barbara to guard the rally. He's friendly with the MLM people, so let him keep working that. We'll personally check on the mystery visitor, while Vigilant gets sent to scout the Locos to keep her busy. Give Wildfire a few hundred bucks and the night off as a reward for her good work and restraint at the shelter. With Vigilante working largely in sight of Intercept, he can let us know if she makes an unscheduled detour.

I'm getting the impression that Eel is good lieutenant material. He was smart enough to build a relationship with the protesters, his mutation is subtle and versatile, and his willingness to go along with the "let them arrest you" thing suggests he's got a level head. With that in mind, we should start easing him into the little planning circle.

As for giving Wildfire the night off, the last thing we want is her taking a club from some power tripping riot cop or pissed off racist. She's a blunt instrument, not really suited to any of these jobs.

ElrondHubbard
Sep 14, 2007

Digger means we're one step closer to having an underground lair. Barb seems like she has a pretty versatile power, but figuring out how to best make use of it can be tough.

AB and send Eel to C

Start with A, just investigating the van and putting the investigation on hold afterwards. This seems time sensitive and we should get it out of the way. We should probably assign Vigilante to getting a head start with the next mission just in case. Take our new investigative reporter pal along and try to get a feel for her vision powers, since they might come in handy for...

B is something of a concern and we should get cracking on it. The police alert is going to wind down eventually and we need to be in a good position to counter whatever gets tossed our way. The evil shadowy figure seems like it might be manipulating the organization and we need to see if we can recruit it to our side or at least neutralize it.

Us all being at C might just make things worse, but having Eel as our representative should work just fine and keep us tight with MLM.

Throw a fun party for the kids.

Edit: As per plan Tran, add Digger and Billy to Eel's crew guarding the rally. Let Wildfire have the night off and tell her we'll get in touch when it's time to heat things up.

Some Time Ago…

Augustus Winters, Ph.D, found himself on the third floor of Meadowbridge boarding school, the hallways quiet in the late afternoon. A teacher (what was her name? Ms. Park?) walked by, giving him a friendly nod. She was still young and new enough at the school that the shine of optimism was nearly blinding. Life would beat that out of her in time.

He adjusted his round glasses and straightened his suit jacket as he walked down the tiled hallway, halting in front of a certain door and then hesitating with his hand on the doorknob. Peering in the window set into the door showed that the classroom held a single occupant, sitting and facing the far corner of the room. Dr. Winters pursed his lips, and let his hand fall away. There was really no reason to enter the room, but he found Ms. Quinn one of the most unique students at the school. Most... fascinating.

Her brain could be full of amazing knowledge, if they could only find the correct key to use to unlock it. Precognition was no longer science fiction, and she was one of the few precogs who could reliably tell back what they saw in their visions. Unfortunately she was also limited to a range of about twenty-four hours in the future. Great for telling the weather - not good enough for what he wanted. Needed.

What his superiors demanded. Results. We need results.

Mrs. Finnegan, one of the nurses (Meadowbridge employed a large medical staff, of course), came up beside him. "She's in a sort of fugue state at the moment, sir. The effects should wear off in a few hours, until then there's nothin' to do but wait and see. She's being monitored," and she pointed through the small door window at the camera mounted in the corner of the classroom. "An' I'm just a step away, of course."

"Of course. Of course." Augustus nodded briskly. "I was just..." in the area? gently caress. "Curious," he ended lamely. "I'll be in my office - please inform me of the results."

"Certainly Dr. Winters." Finnegan smiled, but her sharp eyes didn't share the expression with the rest of her face. She reminded him a little of a shark. Augustus took his leave, walking slowly down the stairs back down to the ground floor.

--

She sat in the corner of the room with her ankles hooked around the chair legs, hands folded neatly in her lap. Her eyes were open, but glazed, staring blankly at where the walls met in front of her. The rest of the classroom was empty, desks all arranged to face the front of the room except for the one that she was sitting in.

Behind her, sun streamed in through a window, the calls and cries of children at play filtering through the late autumn air. Even three stories up one could make out the shouts from the teams playing field hockey in the soggy grass of the green. Whistles blew occasionally, and still she sat, as still as a statue clad in a lumpy grey wool sweater.

Her blue eyes blinked slowly, just often enough to keep from drying out. Footsteps went by in the hall outside, always continuing, never stopping at the door. Sit there, Susie, that's a good girl. She sat, legs and back beginning to stiffen from maintaining her post for so long.

She didn't mind, not really. This new treatment seems promising, they'd said after she'd had the shot. Are you sure? She seems comatose. I'm in here, Susie had wanted to say, but they'd told her to be quiet. She'll be fine. The effects are immediate, but will wear off in a few hours. Just leave her here with a notebook. She'll write down whatever she sees.

Can't see anything, not facing the corner of the room. Susie blinked again, her chest rising and falling with each measured and careful breath. Her eyes closed once more, and the empty classroom fell away, leaving her sitting at the desk in the middle of a vast expanse of nothingness.

The sounds of the game from outside were gone. With her eyes closed, suddenly it seemed she could see... something. Blue sky overhead. Birds singing. The air was warm, and Susie looked at the sunlight on her skin and laughed.

As per IRC, tell Intercept to start looking at setting up a secure workstation for himself. Either here in the house or elsewhere at his preference. Give him full access to our funds.

He's easily the most valuable member of the cell. So much so that it occurred to me Vigilante's mystery friend might even be after him, and not our little outfit as a whole. If it wipes out our operating budget to keep him happy and safe, it's worth it.

My initial thought is to convert the basement, construct a storm shelter, or get him a place in an office building. It really just needs solid walls, few access points, and good access to utilities.

You have been watching Eel interact with the new recruits from Mutant Lives Matters, and you’re impressed with his ability to connect with them. You’re used to being the strong, silent type, and have to work hard at being sociable - skills that he puts to use seemingly without effort. Rather than being jealous, you decide to give him more responsibility in the group. With an MLM rally taking place at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in a few hours you dispatch him, along with Digger and Billy, to meet up with Barbara (Spectrum? Sentinel? She needs a code name) who is already going to be there to cover it for her blog. Wildfire you tell to take the day off, spend it with family, whatever, she’s to keep her phone on, but otherwise have a spa day. She rolls her eyes at you over the phone, but agrees.

You don’t want Vigilante anywhere near you, or Intercept’s apartment, not because you don’t trust her but… okay. You don’t trust her. Mysterious late night meetings with shadowy individuals rarely turn out to be innocent misunderstandings. Anyway, you have a lead on the person she was meeting with, and you can’t let her know you’re onto her. Onto...whatever it is she’s doing. If everything is fine, then you don’t want to lose her trust, and if it’s not then you don’t want her to know she’s lost yours.

You rub your temples, eyes closed briefly, and try not to get lost in a rabbit hole of if she knows I know that she knows that I know. You’d sent her to scout out the Locos some more, maybe try to figure out what was going on with the black shape Intercept had caught on camera a few times. You already had a pretty good idea of the gang’s schedule, and they didn’t seem to have halted any of their drug pushing ways deep in their own territory, even while the Barrio Boneyard and Squib are successfully keeping them out of theirs.

”You ready, boss?” Intercept’s voice cuts through your thoughts, and you look up, the morning sun heating up the inside of your car as you turn the key and start it. The A/C kicks on with a wheeze, cool air trickling in and quailing against the solar onslaught. ”The SUV is a black Suburban. GPS on the Lojack is coming online…” He rattles off some coordinates, and then forwards them to Google Maps on your phone.

Its a short enough drive to the office complex the Suburban is parked at, the signage on the building distressingly vague. You park, adjust the ballcap you’re wearing, and walk nonchalantly toward the front of the building. There’s a man sitting on a bench outside, probably about 20, smoking. You join him, and bum a cigarette.

You quit smoking a while ago, even if it really isn’t going to kill you, but taking a pretend smoke break outside the building is a good way to see some of the comings and goings without drawing a lot of attention to yourself. At least, that’s your immediate plan. Something about the building was making your skin crawl.

What do you do?

“So,” you say, your cigarette burning down slowly between your fingers, “Do you work here?”

He seems surprised you’re talking to him, but recovers. “No - I mean yes.” He laughs, nervously. “I’m a temp. Just started today, actually.”

“Oh, cool.” You smile, and flick the ash off of your cigarette and stick it between your lips. “I’m Jane,” you say around it, and put your hand out.

“Johnny,” he says, giving his hand a quick wipe on his pants before he shakes yours. You keep smiling, puffing out some smoke and turning back toward the doors.

“Who do you work for? I mean, who are you temping for? I’ve, uh, been looking for a new job. Sort of a hostile environment, if you know what I mean,” you say, wondering if you should wink. No, winking is dumb and stupid. If you wink now the timing will be off. Don’t wink!

He looks mildly surprised, hopefully not because you were mentally arguing with yourself, and says, “The whole building is Haven Corp. I’m doing data entry - I mean, it’s not what I went to school for, but I am good at typing.” Johnny smiles, and you smile back.

”Haven Corporation,” says Intercept in your ear. Oh yeah, he’s listening in and keeping an eye on you. You take a drag off your cigarette while he talks. ”Conglomerate with a lot of hats - medical research and pharmaceuticals, health insurance, data security systems...military contracts for security personnel. Some recent talk about them getting into the game for private space shuttles.”

Not exactly what you are expecting. Is the mystery man visiting Haven or working for them? Do you -
A. Get inside the building to poke around?
B. Break into the SUV and look for clues. Intercept can make sure you’re not on camera.
C. B, but you wait in the SUV for the driver to come back.
D. Wait outside for a little while longer.
E. something else

You are all alone!

edit: I guess you could ask your new friend Johnny to do it, but that probably won't turn out well. :cheeky:

E. Briefly head inside the building to inquire about getting a job (cover for why we're here), then go and get a close up inspection of the car without breaking in, attach a tracking device if possible (given our budget, it's a fancy word for cheap cell phone), and try to get a visual ID of the driver before leaving

I don't think we can be subtle about breaking into the car and it will leave considerable evidence that someone's investigating. Besides, who leaves all their cool top secret stuff in their car? Walking into the building and investigating is probably going to put people on alert and this seems like a pretty serious operation we're dealing with, probably with ID badges and heavy duty security.

Be sure to make some more small talk with the guy until our cigarette goes out, as opposed to breaking off mid sentence to go do things (Jane seems like the sort that needs reminding). Chances are we might find out other cool stuff and get an excuse to come back if we ever need to. Maybe exchange numbers with him (not our primary line).

Intercept is plugged into the lojack of the Suburban, for the moment. Having a secondary option for tracking probably isn't a bad idea, though?

Ah. Either way is fine. I'd rather play the long game on this one, maybe suckering Johnny into introducing one of Intercept's viruses into the system to try and get us some of their personnel information (Vigilante and mystery person primarily) and some idea of what their plans are. The less we tip people off before then, the better.

In terms of immediate plans, once we snap a picture of the driver, we can proceed to trace the car back to their place via Lojack and try to ID them that way (then either stage a break in or have Intercept hack their computer remotely).

Your cigarette is almost gone, and your capacity for small talk is heading that way as well. “Thanks again,” you say. “Maybe I’ll see you inside?”

Johnny nods amicably, waving as you stub out your smoke and make your way inside the building. You approach the reception desk, noting mentally where the security cameras were. There is an armed guard at a desk with a metal detector that you have to pass through before you reach the elevators. You keep your face carefully neutral, and lean on the reception desk, pushing your baseball hat up a little. The skin-crawling sensation is even worse inside, but it doesn't seem to be affecting anyone else.

“Can I help you?” The overweight woman behind the desk doesn’t even look up as she talks, her attention on her computer screen and whatever it is she’s typing.

“Uh, yeah, I was wondering if you were hiring?” You put on a hopeful smile, looking down at her workspace and trying to read the paper she was typing from.

She looks up at that, takes in your plaid shirt and ballcap, and you can almost feel her categorizing you. “We aren’t. Sorry.” She smiles tightly, dismissing you with a look, and returns to her typing.

You grit your teeth, smile anyway. “Thanks anyway. Could I come back and drop off a resume anyway..?” She nods, irritated, and you back away, heading back outside as Johnny comes in, his smoke break apparently over. You smile at him, and note his ID badge as you leave the climate controlled lobby for the mid-morning sun.

The black Suburban isn’t parked right by the front of the building, and you walk out into the parking lot to swing nonchalantly around it as you take the long way to your own car. Phone in your hand you take a few pictures of the inside (it’s empty except for a Jack in the Box cup and a short stack of unlabeled folders), and then you crouch down behind it, sticking an old cell phone on the undercarriage. Intercept can use that to track the car, or even listen in if there’s a conversation happening near it.

”Would be nice to get eyes on in that building,” he says in your ear. ”I can write up a code, just need someone to plug it in.”

“Work on it,” you agree, “Shouldn’t be too hard to figure out how to get it inside.” Once back inside your own car you crank open a window and check your watch. The rally was probably getting started about now. You are considering calling up Eel and seeing how it’s going when a couple people walk out of the office building and head toward the Suburban.

You slide down in your seat and point your phone in their direction, zooming in to take as clear a picture as you can of their faces. He is wearing a military uniform - camouflage, probably Army - and puts his cap on but not before you take a picture.

She taps his arm and says something before they get into the vehicle, but they don’t look in your direction. Your uneasy feeling intensifies.

What do you do?

Options to pick from! :)
A. Follow them in your car
B. Leave and go home
C. Go to the rally
D. Go see how Vigilante is doing with the Locos
E. Try to find out why you feel so weird by forcing your way deeper into the building. They can't exactly STOP you, and you think you can find an alternate way inside.
