I'm a KITH fan, and I rewatched this tonight after not seeing it since its original release (when I was much younger).

I think even the biggest KITH fans will admit the TV show, for all its good sketches, had a decent share of terrible ones. Brain Candy is like a 1.5 hour bad KITH sketch... there's very few laughs, if any. Though the variety of characters is admirable, few of them are given enough material to actually produce good setups.

There just aren't enough attempts at jokes, and even the few obvious attempts are only about 30% successful. You might chuckle at something, only to have the humor killed by a big miss seconds later. For example: The gay dad stuff was pretty funny until the musical number, which could've maybe been funny if they'd bothered to come up with lyrics other than "I'm gay! He's gay!". The concept was weird and fun enough, but they just didn't take it anywhere, and it especially sucks because I think they actually could've made it hilarious. It feels like they were too careful and conservative and too focused on creating as many characters as possible (each member played like 6+ different people in the movie).

I wish I could give it a higher rating, but it's really a 1.5. I think I laughed maybe three times.

RATING: 1.5

PROS: Some of the created characters are fairly entertaining on their own
CONS: Not funny, aside from that. There's just very few jokes.

Loved this movie, every thing about this movie I found to be pricess. From the guy trying to sell the corperation on a pill to give worms to ex-girlfriends, to the Loren Michaels / Dr Evil CEO.

Great quotes!

"Its made from monkey cum! The drug, it's made from monkey come. They keep these monkeys locked in a room all day, you know, and then they make them jack off and then they boil it or something and that's what they drug is made of.", Cab Driver

"O.K. Wally. You're my best man. Now here's the plan: you go over there and gently caress them. We'll stay here and masturbate.", Sergeant

CHRIS: No, Don! It's the drug! Alice tried to warm me but I didn't listen, but people gotta know. We gotta go to the media.
MARV: The media, Chris?
DON: What are we talking? Newspapers? Television? CD-ROM? Um, college radio?
CHRIS: Yes, Don. The whole kit and caboodle.
DON: You know, I think we ought to think about it before we go to the media.
MARV: M-hm. Hmmm...
They both think for a few moments.
MARV: No.
DON: No?
MARV: No. I don't think we should go to the media.
DON: You know, I agree.

STUMMIES SCIENTIST: Well, I've been working on a thing. It's, uh, sorta like Stummies.
DON: Go on. I like what I hear.
STUMMIES SCIENTIST: It's exactly like Stummies. ( bigger.wav 44k)
DON: And the twist is?
STUMMIES SCIENTIST: It's a much bigger pill.
DON: I like a lot. Is it ready for production?
STUMMIES SCIENTIST: Yes sir, it's ready to go.
DON: Yeah, have there been any side effects?
STUMMIES SCIENTIST: Yes sir, a few side effects.
NATALIE: Well that's OK. As long as there's no flipper babies, right Don?
Everyone laughs
STUMMIES SCIENTIST: Well, there have been a few flipper babies.

Overall, it's a pretty bland movie, but i couldn't help cracking up at the "SOMETIMES IT'S DARK I WALK ALONE" song.

Daah, I heard that!
I think Brain Candy is probably one of the funniest movies of the 90's.

Though, I seriously doubt that the "Will Ferrell is a comedic genius!" crowd would really get the subdued humor. And I think people expecting it to be a 90-long KITH episode will be almost as disappointed.

It's different. For instance, where olhado sees the gay dad musical being simplistic and unfunny, that's kind of the point. He wasn't supposed to be a Buddy Cole type of character.

Admittedly, my perspective may be a bit different. Having worked in a corporate setting (and in healthcare), a lot of the Roritor scenes were hilarious. I doubt someone who worked at Blockbuster, or at a nuclear power plant would see the humor. Being a teenager at the height of "grunge", and having a metric fuckton of pseudo-depressive friends made Grievo (and his fans) a riot.

It's also worth considering how at the time, Prozac was fairly new, and doctors were prescribing it like it was Tylenol, while other companies were rushing to get competing products out the door. That helps make the premise (at the time) funnier than it would be now.

For the most part, you can watch a KITH episode and it'll be just as funny now as it was ten years ago. I suppose the comedy in Brain Candy isn't as enduring.

The nipples of Mother Hope have run dry.

This movie has a few big laughs but overall it isn't really much better than an average Kids sketch. I don't agree that it's terrible but it definitely could have used a few more guest appearances by established characters and more cohesive pacing. Still, I can see myself rewatching it from time to time, though not as much as I will rewatch my Kids in the Hall Season 1 (I pray for the rest) DVDs.

I agree. I get more laughs from a 30 minute KITH rerun than I do during the whole run of Brain Candy, and it's 3x as long. Maybe it's just an issue of coming from sketch comedy. The characters and situations on the show are hilarious, but they only need to last and be fresh for 5 minutes tops. With a full length movie, they had to carry the same main characters for 1.5 hours.

Some shows that get a movie basically take their show's idea and make it all the more funny. For example, I enjoyed the South Park movie way more than I did any episode of the TV show. With Brain Candy it just seemed like an idea for a sketch that got dragged on for too long.

Don't be scared
The only thing that kept me from turning the channel when it was on Cinemax was that after about a 10 minute lull in comedy, something would pop up that as just funny enough to keep me interested. The movie needed some tuning, but overall it wasn't that bad. Certainly it wasn't that good either. I am giving it a 3.0 because for everything good in the film, there was something that was bad. So it balanced out (not for the best). They could have done better than that.

A mildly funny movie at best. Like many other people, I like the TV show more.

I found this image on the Internet, perhaps you've heard of it? It's been around for a while I hear.

This movie goes into your brain, chemically, and it releases a substance that makes you laugh, chemically! Love the scene of patient 279's happiest memory at Christmas.

3.5 at least

Pillbug
I am a huge KITH fan, and this movie was some of their best comedy ever written. It didn't have any of the slow lovely characters their show often has, and was nearly a laugh a minute. I don't think there was one scene that wasn't funny through the entire movie. The whole army scene is a riot.

This movie is in my top 10 of all time. Fans of the TV show should not miss this for any reason. This was primarily a sleeper hit. It did not get much attention in the box office. The sarcastic, anything goes comedy is really top notch.

If you are not familiar with the content of the show. Basically there are five guys that act out about 30+ characters both male and female. The cross-dressing is hysterical. Also the characters are so different you really don't notice. Also in this form of humor anything goes. They make fun of corportate CEO types, scientists, talk show hosts, rock music, police, cancer patients, homosexuals, and pretty much everone.

The plot is this: A giant pharmaceutical company that only cares about profits comes out with a "happy drug". The rest is the madness that results.

The real highlights are Cisco: the creative marketing guy, The CEO and vice president of the pharmaceutical company which have a Dither's/Mr.Burns type of humor, the police are excellent as well as all of the pop culture icons. There is one particular scene with a grandmother recieving a visit from her son and his family that is particularly gut-wrenching saracasm at its best. By the end you'll either slit your wrists or laugh until you can't hold down your food. It's not for the overly sensitive types. If you can't laugh at yourself you may not like this comedy. But if you like the Dennis Leary, kick 'em when they're down sarcasm, then this will be right up your alley.

I highly, highly recommend.

RATING: 5.5

PROS: Hysterical, Irreverant Fun. Highest points are in the exploitation of Corporate Business, Gay people
CONS: Monty Python-esque
