Nice try, asshole

Directed by: Max Ophüls
Starring: Paul Hörbiger, Magda Schneider, Luise Ullrich, Gustaf Gründgens

This is my first Ophuls, and I'm very pleased about it. It's an elegant film, based on a play by Arthur Schnitzler (apparently the play is considerably more cynical). The comedy is funny, the suspense is tense, the romance is charming, and the drama is touching. The story is a bit pat and melodramatic, but it clips along at a wonderful pace so that the 83 minutes feels like a half hour. All of the actors in this movie were superb. The sets and costumes (of Vienna, approximately turn of the century) were very well designed. The cinematography is very fine, at times remarkably impressive. The sleigh ride scene is gorgeous, and there's some marvelous movement over a dinner table that seems quite ahead of its time.

RATING: 4.5

PROS: superbly constructed film
CONS: somewhat mundane story
