I don't know poo poo about dancing, but holy sweet mother did this movie own.

You know how people justify watching Arnold movies by saying that they "wanted 90 minutes of guns and got it" and other bullshit? Well, SB is like that, only instead of a teutonic bodybuilder shooting people you have dancing, LOTS of dancing. There is hardly a minute in the movie where someone isn't dancing, and it's all filmed with the most gorgeous of angles and colours. Probably the best dancing movie ever made.

RATING: 5.0

PROS: Probably the best dancing movie ever made
CONS: Not for those that don't like dance

This romantic comedy, of Australian origin, is one of the greatest "date" movies ever. It's sweet and upbeat without ever being sappy or taking itself too seriously. Recommended to pretty much anybody, it's wholesome enough it won't offend your date or mom, yet witty enough that viewers are unlikely to get bored or jaded.

It's the story of Scott, somewhat of a rebel and a legend among the competitive ballroom dancing community, who creates a scandal when he decides to develop "new steps" for an upcoming competition. His radical ideas are shunned until he meets Fran, a wallflower student at the dance school where he teaches, and the two become partners to train for the competition.

You can guess everything that happens from here, but story is beside the point here. The characters and presentation are all done with a really likeable style and goofy charm. "Strictly Ballroom" pokes affectionate fun at its subject matter and manages to be simultaneously enthusiastic and self-parodic. The pacing, camerawork, and visual style all contribute to an appealing sense of fun.

I'm generally pretty allergic to formulaic romance stories, and don't know the first thing about dancing if it's not of the slam- or break- variety, but can't help but like "Strictly Ballroom" an awful lot.

4/5
