Directed by: Ronald Neame Starring: Alec Guinness, John Mills Let's drop the pretenses, this film is all about the actors. Neame himself said that his job is to stay out of the viewers minds and let the actors carry the film. That being said, Sir Alec and Sir John both turn in excellent performances for two very different characters. Jock (Guinness) is a gregarious military who has worked his way up the ladder and Barrow (Mills) is a by-the-books career-military guy whose family has been involved for years. Needless to say there is conflict between the two with an ultimately intense climax that puts on display the skills of these two actors. By the end of the film, the audience feels sympathetic toward both (or maybe neither) of the characters after their underlying motivations are revealed. Unintrusive camerawork and classic cinematography present a fairly average experience looking at it from a technical standpoint and the secondary actors turn in great performances. RATING: 4 PROS: Acting, acting, acting CONS: Pacing ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054412/
