Directed by: Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato Starring: Linda Lovelace, Gerard Damiano, Harry Reems The porn industry fascinates me. If a society can be measured by its extremes, porn is a great prism through which to view it. Everything from a country's sexual mores to the elasticity of its freedoms can be measured by its porn. As society has gotten weirder, so has porn, and so it goes. There's not really much to say about this documentary. It's breezy and flashy, with a lot of entertaining segments and showy editing, but it still manages to say a lot. Ironically, Lovelace, who would later become a crusader against porn and claim she was raped every time she was shown loving on screen (even though it was pretty obvious she enjoyed it and the filmmakers all deny it), remains the biggest mystery and the biggest weirdo in this human carnival of pornographers. Besides the bizarre rape/hypnotism claims, she also had a cat named Adolf Hitler and came across as the least educated of those interviewed, with little to no clue what the obscenity argument was about. Unfortunately, she died before the filmmakers could interview her in person and that is the largest hindrance to the film. While Damiano and Reems are interesting people, Lovelace was the star and, without her, some of the pleasure of seeing these old-rear end people recount their days as controversial pornographers is muted. That said, despite being a documentary obviously designed more for entertainment than pure information, "Inside Deep Throat" gets a lot deeper than similar culture-shock docs. This is a worthy rental, but there's little reason to watch it a second time. Also, from what I understand, the only difference between the R- and NC-17-rated versions was the inclusion of a clip of Lovelace's first on-screen deep throat. So if it really means that much to you, buy it or rent it from an indie video store. But if you rent it from Hollywood or Blockbuster you're not missing anything you probably haven't seen before. RATING: 4.0 PROS: Entertaining as poo poo, notable selection of interviewees CONS: Lovelace is dead, so no new interviews from her ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418753/ Keanu Grieves fucked around with this message at 20:20 on Nov 3, 2005 |
