Directed by: Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin Starring: Yves Montand, Jane Fonda Hmm, this is both a very blunt and confusing film. In terms of its bluntness, it is pretty obvious in its leftist politics. Ranging from condemning the acts of May 1968 as not going far enough to belittling the consumerism of the times. Its ambiguousness stemmed from its jumping from a meta-film to normal film and then to a narrative that was confusing. This is not to say that it was bad, but it was just really jarring (even moreso than Godard's previous films). Essentially, this is Godard's full-on political film that points many fingers. We go from a union strike, to marital problems, to an apparent confession to the audience by Godard (through Yves Montand), to consumerism, to police brutality. It's really a whirlwind of social issues and Godard handled it fairly deftly. My only complaint was just that it really seemed to drag sometimes (supermarket scene, particularly). Anyways, it was pretty obviously a Godard just based on the editing alone. Jumpcuts in abundance coupled with re-running just played footage. There was great use of colors in this film whose purpose went over my head. Montand and Fonda turned in good performances, but Godard really seemed to be the star of the film. Not as good as his earlier stuff, but still worth a watching. 4/5 RATING: 4 PROS: Interesting look at how political films are made, editing CONS: Pacing ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069398

Oh Godard, you frustrating bastard. You start off with some wonderful stuff, meta-cinema comments and neat little self-references, plenty of intriguing photography and technique, a bold French-themed palette (red, white and blue). You really got me into it. But you couldn't hold back, could you? You had to start speechifying. Blah blah blah arrogant shallow pseudo-intellectual gibberish blah blah. An absolute mess, but with Godard, it's always an interesting one. 2.5 As a sidenote... how come almost everyone in the supermarket is buying gigantic bags of oranges? Lazy prop guys?
