Mostly it was a 40s/50s engine design intended to be bulletproof and run on anything, as a result it makes 190hp and 425 ft-lbs (iirc) out of 7.8L displacement in 1800lbs of unmotivated cast iron with a 22:1 compression ratio AND a turbo, redlines at 2600rpm (2400rpm if you want to not toss a rod after a few hundred/thousand hours), gets 4.5mpg whether you are loading it down or not, and leaks everywhere. It's a piece of garbage and I can't wait to replace 1800lbs/190hp/425 ft-lbs/7.8L/4.5mpg/2600rpm with 1000lbs/215hp/440 ft-lbs/5.9L/15+mpg/3000rpm (cummins 12 valve 6BT swap), then turn it up to 300hp and a bit more torque with almost no modification required to the new engine. Hopefully I can sell the old engine to someone for as much as the new one costs.

Mechanically injected compression ignition engine, manual transmission, manual transfer case. Cable driven speedo and tach. The most electrically advanced things in it are the ignitor module for the intake flame heater and the low air pressure warning buzzer, I think. It's also my most-broken vehicle. Hasn't run since... 2013? 2014? I actually can't remember.

I mean, the head gaskets have gone twice in under 5k, but once was due to an extreme overheat and the other was because some retard trusted the army maint manual's head gasket procedure. It actually had fine HGs still, they just didn't have the oil passage crush washers in them to keep oil going to the heads instead of blasting out through the side of the head gasket and soaking the engine bay, which it promptly did.

The stock 12 valve 6BT power/torque numbers aren't much of a gain over the LDS-465-1A, granted, but as I threw in right after that, allegedly you can turn one up to 300hp basically without upgrading anything. I've not verified this and the diesel forums I keep ending up on while researching it are a loving cesspit of stupid redneckery, but just the fuel economy, weight, and reliability are worth it for me. I no longer trust my stock engine. Oh, also, the increased redline is totally worth it, just dropping a 6BT in will make my gear limited top speed 60mph instead of 52. Add the 46" tires and it's capable of sustaining 65mph, add the overdrive transmission I got for it forever ago and it should do 84, which is loving terrifying and mostly just means I'll be able to loaf along at 65 without redlining the engine all the time. I really should take a new fleet photo sometime... this one is very seriously outdated.

The thought of doing 80mph in a 5ton or deuce and a half makes all of my self preservation instincts stand up straight and look around, concerned.

Once you're done using up those OEM Conti's, get some Michelin PSS's. Major front end grip upgrade (at least on mine they were), and they look cooler on the wheel as well. In fact, go do a burnout for about 20 minutes now to hasten this process, you've got the torque!

I forgot you don't have mountains and curvy roads there in Orthogonalistan. Imagine if you will, a situation where aggressive application of 'steering input' results in the front end of the car needing to make an abrupt direction change and relies considerably on the front right or left tire's ability to bite without losing adhesion with the road surface in a lateral fashion. It's pretty fun! E: Brake dust!!! Ether Frenzy fucked around with this message at 21:36 on Jul 2, 2016 |
