Hi radical thread, I haven't stood on a skateboard in 8 years but would like to get back into it. My question is I don't have a board anymore and am working on a tiny budget, what's the absolute cheapest way to get a skateboard(regular decks, not longboard/cruiser) that is still a step up from buying a piece of driftwood on plastic wheels from Walmart? I wasn't very good then and definitely won't be now so I don't mind something just barely adequate, if it can at least last a year till I'm out of school that would be fine, I'd just really like to get on it this summer.

That flower deck is cool as poo poo. Also I wouldn't recommend having friends who are crackheads, except for in this one situation where it worked out well.

I finally got a skateboard today; Enjoi deck, Spitfire wheels, Girl trucks. It was the first time I stood on a skateboard in like 7 years so things are still pretty wobbly, but at the very least I can ride it without instantly smashing my whole body on the ground. Now I just need to find a time when there will be no witnesses at the skatepark to see me awkwardly spazm my way back into the swing of things.

Cicero posted:Tonight I went skateboarding in the mostly-dark at my apartment complex's tennis courts, just going in circles over and over (because I'm a newb so it's still fun). I also got my first hole-in-the-jeans from wiping out. Skateboarding is cool. It only took me two decades of waiting to get around to learning it. Tennis courts are so nice and smooth. I wish I could say the same about any of the sidewalks within a mile or two of where I live, though; it's a loving pain having to push every four seconds across weeds growing through cracks and broken up gravel. I'm also having trouble ollieing probably because I'm a pansy and I'm having a hard time committing. I think I know what I"m doing because when I tried doing it on stationary ground (aka while standing in the middle of a grass lawn like an idiot) it seemed like it worked just fine.

Is there a way to tell a decent penny style skateboard from a cheap toy other than brand or is Penny literally the only decent brand?

Cool, I just want something that's small and can go over the lovely sidewalks in my neighborhood better than a regular deck with tiny 50mm wheels. I'll drop by the nearest bikeshop or something.

lol riding a penny for the first time is hard, it was a bad idea to break it in while grocery shopping.

I wanna get a longboard instead of a bike for getting around this summer since skateboarding is more fun and I don't need it for long commutes or anything. I know a little bit about them but not a lot, can someone give me a quick list of brands to keep in mind/avoid when I'm shopping around? If it makes any difference I'm pretty sure I want a double kick with dropthrough trucks.

Horizontal Tree posted:A normal double kick shape and drop-through trucks don't exactly work together. You can get drop-through freeride boards with small kicks but you're not gonna get anything you can ollie like a street deck, if thats what you want. I'm not expecting it to be a trick deck with drop throughs or anything, I just want the ability to pop the front wheels up if I need to and maybe boneless. I'm imaging something like a sector 9 sprocket or mini shaka but less pricy. There's lots of stuff that look like knock offs of those boards but like I said outside of the really nice brands like s9 and landyachtz I dunno who makes decent stuff.

Horizontal Tree posted:Thats about as cheap as its gonna get for good quality. You really don't need much on the ends to do what you want to though. I used to be able to pop-shuv-it my topmount DH decks. Thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna go with this, a Sector 9 Slingshot with 70mm 82a race formula wheels. http://www.amazon.com/Sector-Slings...tor+9+longboard $140ish seems like a good price and as far as I can tell they aren't cheaping out on any of the parts.

I feel like the extra size/stability of the longboard will be much better if you have to lug around anywhere near as much poo poo as I had to in college, trying to balance a backpack with a laptop, textooks, supplies etc on a penny sounds like a huge pain in the rear end. I can go grocery shopping on my longboard and still ride okay as long as I keep the trip light. It's also stable enough I can slowly roll back home after a few drinks without dying. Maybe meet halfway and get a nickel or one of the quest fishtail cruisers?

I will find a big strong husband to lift me off my sector 9 and into a comfortable middle class adulthood in the suburbs and I'm glad of it

The weather is finally nice enough here to start skating and there's a huge but not deathly steep hill near me I'd like to conquer but because it's the midwest there's so many cracks and uneven seems that I'm afraid i might eat poo poo no matter what.

Goblin posted:As for minimizing injury, when you hit the ground avoid using your hands at all costs and roll like a motherfucker if you can to try and dissipate some of the impact force. Knowing this didn't stop me from breaking my wrist (instinctively sticking my hands out is a hard habit to break) but it's something to try and keep in mind during the split second between fall and impact if you can, haha. Yeah this is real true, I fell going like 5 mph on a bike trail and took a bunch of skin off my palm, elbow and knee cause I tried to catch myself which puts you in the worst faceplant position, like a month later I hit a jacked up sidewalk piece going way faster at night and got cartwheeled all ragdoll lookin but was completely fine. Zigmidge posted:Keep your mind on sticking only your butt out (like you're learning how to snowboard for the first time) and bending your lead knee more than the rear one. When I was thinking about getting a longboard I saw a video with two dudes bombing some ridiculous hill and when the guy with the camera was overtaking the dude in front he reached out and rested his hand on the other dudes butt to stay close behind him and that helped me realize it was the sport for me

I had no clue Danny Way was possibly involved in the Josh Swindell thing either
