Everything about this is great. I knew all the important spoilers but had no idea this would be a caper movie for 30 minutes. Marion's escape is surprisingly tense even though she obviously has to get by the cop and survive the rainstorm to reach the motel. There are a lot of camera tricks and cuts used for distortion and hiding the killer's face, but they come off as reasonable ways to shoot the scene instead of distracting. All those Principal Skinner jokes are much funnier now.

It was fantastic technically, but the story and characters were flat. Vickie was not a strong enough character to justify so many scenes of Jake's home life. The movie might have been more interesting if it was focused on the machinations of boxing corruption. Every time I think of something to improve the movie I end up describing Casino.

I don't like 1984 and outstanding set design can't get around that. The sets are easily the best part of the movie. The cartoonish, bleak style stands out among the dystopian films I've seen. The Tuttle/Buttle mixup and swarm of papers are funny gags but the endless bureaucracy scenes fall flat. I kind of wish the movie was really about the fantasy sequences. A winged guy fighting a samurai is just more interesting than a guy in a suit fighting the government.

This is an incredibly well made film. It's a very standard vampire story and there is a lot of waiting around for the inevitable but the direction is fantastic. I'm used to silent comedies that are plainly shot outside of some tricks (Safety Last!) or something that works for a gag. Nosferatu makes great use of shadows and action rather than camera movement. I don't like tinted films and would prefer things in black and white, but it doesn't hurt this. I like the concept of title cards as a narrator versus a transcript like most silent films. The guy playing Hutter is constantly overacting but everyone else is very good.

Ramrod Hotshot watch The Prestige. It's Batman vs. Wolverine with Bowie!

Chili gave me Leaving Las Vegas. Cage is believable and shows a lot of range but his character is missing something. Cage as a troubled man in Las Vegas was likely more remarkable in 1995. The hooker with a heart of gold is a boring, passive character. Her monologues are a needless departure from the action and reveal nothing. Shue does all she can but there's not much here. Each character is more dull than tragic but their relationship is vibrant and the only thing holding this movie together. I don't care about either person or their problems but I could watch them talk for hours.

I hate the cinematography. The camera often moves into position rather than he actors like a plain documentary style but then there are fades, quick cuts, and other embellishments. The director escapes the many bad closeups by panning instead of framing it right in the first place. Almost everything shot at night is enjoyable, but the director seems determined to pull me away should anything become captivating.

Harold & Maude without all that cheeriness. C

The film is shot incredibly well and the structure is interesting but no version of events is particularly exciting. It's nice that I'm not frustrated the truth never fully comes out but I'm not invested in anything. I guess it's interesting to have a film remind me I'm a passive observer. The trial conceit is a really great scam to get the characters to speak directly to the audience without making it look weird. The story can be confusing and mysterious but it's never forces. Characters have motivation to lie and aren't hiding facts only to serve the narrative. Kurosawa gets a lot of of basically 3 sets and the film never suffers from the "This is a stage play!" feeling I get from some films with limited sets and action. C

The scary mask movie that begins with two murder victims tossed in a pit is actually a slow burn tragedy about jealousy and sex!

I wanted to like this but the first 45 minutes are very slow and it couldn't win me back. Everything that needs to be established is shown multiple times and I could live without a third of this movie. The mother-in-law is the only complex character and is very well acted. The lovers are simple by design. The film looks great despite spartan sets of huts, a hole, and a field. The hots of the field are vibrant and exciting every time. The repeated shots of sleeping people are not. C

The acting and story are fine but the directing and cinematography are the stars. The first act uses more forced angles and quick cuts than most of the film. You're being trained to accept the movie as a vision rather than something being documented. I'd love to see a fully silent version. You can figure out the plot through pantomime and the narration could be reduced to title cards. I need to see every other Malick film.

Casablanca is really good. It's very much a studio film and the director is there to document the action. The rain washing off Ilsa's letter is the only memorable flourish in a movie loaded with info dumping broadcasts, headlines, and loudspeakers. Bogart is a great star and is fun to watch alongside anyone. There's a surprising amount of comedy and the dialogue is fantastic. The American WW2 involvement metaphor doesn't add or take away from the story. Greenstreet is used well but Lorre is squandered so the movie is clearly inferior to The Maltese Falcon. B

This is a very negative review for a good movie. Goodfellas is a very entertaining movie that just isn't as good as its peers.I imagine I would like it better if I hadn't seen anything after 1990. It lacks a driving narrative and there isn't enough character or director flourish to make up for it. It has fewer interesting characters than Casino and it's not even close to The Godfather. There was enough going on that it would be worth my time to see it again. Politics existed as a backdrop but never really weaved into the personal drama. Maybe the point was that Hal Phillip Walker was obviously a charlatan and there was nothing to reveal. Lily Tomlin had the best plotline and got a lot out of very simple interactions. Everything shot at her home was enjoyable. Henry Gibson was incredible as Haven Hamilton. "200 Years" was the perfect bad country anthem and Haven only became more entertaining. Sjostrom was good as the lead, but there's a lot of telling of how people view him instead of showing how he is. The hearse and exam nightmares reminded me of The Twilight Zone but they're memorable and not out of place. It's not much of a story but the directing is fantastic. The opening hike down the mountain and all the narrow raft shots are great. Shooting in 4:3 really helps the claustrophobia of the raft. The camera circling around the raft at the end is fantastic. Lighting it would have been impossible but I wish there were a few shots of the Amazon at night. Kinski is good but Aguirre is a fairly simple character. Having seen Burder of Dreams I think the making of these crazy Amazon films might be better than the result.
