What the hell is Harvest Moon: My Little Shop? The little video on Nintendo's site makes me think it was a horrible idea that shouldn't have seen the light of day.

It's more like Cooking Mama than anything else, except that the minigames don't work properly. Don't bother with it. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King will definitely scratch the Harvest Moon itch so get that instead.

The 3DS version of Tale of Two Towns has been delayed indefinitely due to slow 3DS uptake. The DS version is still coming on schedule.

RF3 is leaps and bounds better than the other games, and the upcoming console game (Tides of Destiny, Wii/PS3) is worth looking at too.

Where did you hear 'indefinite'? This article says it'll be a month after the DS version, and Gamestop says it's 20 days after.

Yeah, I looked this up and the sites that said it was delayed "indefinitely" edited their posts to reflect the October date. I don't know what a month's wait will do for sales, but whatever. For what it's worth the 3DS version is basically just the DS version in 3D, with some extra StreetPass stuff.

Apparently, the DS version is lower resolution. What I might consider a shoddy port, considering the style just feels stupidly cramped on the DS.

The DS version was always gonna have a lower resolution, the screen is smaller. Also, I daresay this began its life as a DS game and the 3DS version is the port.

Not directly related to HM/RF but it seems appropriate to post here: I just put in an order for Fishing Resort on Wii (which HM/RF fans might wanna check out, incidentally - open-world fishing, light RPG/management elements) and I was reminded of those River King games that Natsume releases every now and again, and how I've never actually played one. Can someone give me an overview of how these work, and which is the best to get? From what I recall they're more RPG-ish than Harvest Moon inasmuch as there's turn-based combat and levelling and whatnot, yeah?

It kinda does in PAL-land... GAME lets you buy eShop codes for certain retail games (first-party stuff, mostly) and they have a habit of accidentally selling the codes before the physical copy is available.

While MarvelousAQL has made every effort to secure the title’s release for this territory, it is, unfortunately, not possible to do so at this time.

Crosspost from the 3DS thread:

Rising Star Games have announced that they'll finally be releasing Hometown Story in PAL-land on May 2, and they've made a bunch of changes based on feedback from the NA version:

quote:

Hometown Story is nearly here and I’m happy to say we (Rising Star Games) have been paying attention to the feedback from the US release. Wada-san and Rising Star Games expressed a desire to rectify these issues for the European version of Hometown Story which have now been achieved. As the European version had a longer development time due to translations we utilised this extra period to give Wada-san (Toybox) the opportunity to make these enhancements.
Hometown Story Enhancements:
Faster pacing of story development – This was one of the main issues with reviewers and this has been fully corrected to give a more meaningful experience to the player
Shop mechanics – more fun frantic pacing just like a real shop
NPC’s reactions – NPC shoppers and residents react to changes straight away i.e. Shopkeeper’s fulfilment of customer requests responded to straight away by NPC’s
We’re also pleased to announce that the addition of fishing as an extra activity in Hometown Story has also been included. With all these enhancements added together I’m happy to say this will be THE definitive release of Wada-san’s latest creation: Hometown Story.

Let's hope the other versions get patched, too.

Posted in the 3DS thread, but it's worth posting here, too:

The latest Harvest Moon game (Connect To The New World or whatever the subtitle translates to, I forget) will be published in North America by XSEED, but because the "Harvest Moon" brand is owned by Natsume USA, XSEED and Marvelous AQL are rebranding the game and the series as "Story of Seasons". Same developer, same games, different name, different publisher.

PaletteSwappedNinja

It's worth noting that Natsume still owns the Harvest Moon name and will probably continue to release games under that name, but whether they'll be any good (or be given the time to become good) is anyone's guess.

Fantasy Life has multiplayer but I think it's all sidequests, I don't know if you can progress the main game that way. (3DS, out in Europe now, out in America next week)

Story of Seasons has some sort of multiplayer, but I don't know if it's real-time or if you can just trade items or whatever, I forget. (It still hasn't been released outside of Japan, either. 3DS.)

Animal Crossing has a ton of multiplayer, of course.

The game is being developed by a new Japanese branch of Natsume USA, one that has nothing to do with the pre-existing Natsume company in Japan (Natsume Atari). Natsume's genealogy is confusing.

When they say they have experience, what they mean is they've been localising the games for so long that they think they understand what people want, I don't think they mean to imply they're working with real Bokujo veterans or anything.

Yeah, from the sounds of things you never get to visit the village where everyone lives, they'll either show up in/around your house on a set schedule or appear around the valley for quest-specific stuff.

When they said back to basics they were talking Game Boy basics, I think - the farming seems okay and the minecraft parts are fun but everything else has been massively scaled back.

PaletteSwappedNinja
Jun 3, 2008

One Nation, Under God.
Just going on what I'm reading online, people do seem to genuinely like the way the farming works in this game and the valley is really big so you can go all-out if you want to, but the marriage/socialisation elements have definitely been marginalised, to put it nicely, so if you're into modern Bokujo/Rune Factory etc and see all that stuff as the primary drawcard then you probably needn't bother with Lost Valley, but if you're more into the pre-HM64 games you'll probably dig this one. Like, it's not another Hometown Story, they actually did okay on this one, just don't jump in without knowing what you're getting.

In Lost Valley's case it was a new team starting from scratch so I'm just relieved they managed to get as much right as they did. I don't blame people for skipping it in favour of Story of Seasons but I do think Lost Valley proves Natsume has a chance of being genuinely competitive on their own.

They said they're gonna start talking about updates/DLC next month, so I guess that's when we'll find out whether or not they're listening to peoples' complaints/requests.
