Both, and then meta-meltdowns all the way down.

Also Hoth is technically a desert, as they're defined by rainfall and not by temperature.

Technically, she was more of a cat lady during Stackpole's time.

I think the Selonians were still otter people though.

edit: Isard's Revenge was obviously Stackpole deciding that, for Gavin, cat ladies are okay but dog ladies are not.

According to the Tarkin novel the DS was being built over Geonosis, though maybe by this point it's been moved. It'd be neat if it actually was Despayre, which apparently almost got put into the end of ROTS.

Rebels also implicitly confirmed the Death Star was built over Geonosis. It also confirmed the Genonoseans were wiped out, likely after construction completed. The planet wasn't destroyed but the entire population was genocided by some means.

I'm also wondering if the scene of the starship fleeing a collapsing cave is actually a ship trying to escape a planet imploding from a superlaser strike. Because that would be loving incredible.

That was my thought too, after going back to read the Wookieepedia article on Despayre: "The atmosphere ignited and created a chain reaction that damaged and sterilized the entire planetary surface. Physical surface damage was extreme; ground quakes and volcanic eruptions joined with great waves caused by the shifting of tectonic plates on the ocean floor. The second shot, fired an hour and fifteen minutes after the first to allow the capacitors time to recharge, caused massive kilometers-wide cracks in the planet itself. The molten core rushed to the surface through a myriad of new volcanoes." Not that it's strong evidence, but it definitely jibes with the "giant clouds of exploding dust" shot around 1:38.

In addition to Gavin's romance with a dog/cat/horse person and Corran's romance with an otter person, you get Wedge's brief liaison with that omwati scientist.
Stackpole may possibly have had some issues.
Though the omwati are usually just drawn as blue humans rather than full-on bird people, so that might not be particularly furry.

X-wing does have a female human getting with a male twi'lek, which is kind of a fun reversal.

She had a walk on cameo, and she didn't die. They asked her if she knew anything about any Imperial superweapons to fight the Vong with. If I remember right this was the same conversation where Han makes the joke about The Nostril of Palpatine.

I watched Attack of the Clones recently and I noticed something. I was watching to see what sort of camera techniques were being used in the film, and while most of the shots are pretty mundane without much cleverness, the one thing that stood out to me were the wide shots that zoomed in to specific details. It's about the only unique thing in the film's visual style, and it is so well known that it keeps showing up in tons of films nowadays. Hell, even Empire at War's cinematic camera had a function just to do the dramatic wide angle zoom in.

Even the worst dreck can have an influence on filmmaking, it seems.

I'm on my phone so I can't double check, but the ultra wide zoom to detail move is something that was done long before AotC. Especially in 60s/70s cinema.

Rapture is a Lego house compared to the scale of Lando's schemes.

One thing you can say about the old EU is that no matter how bad the book is, if Lando shows up he's going to be running a scheme that is at least conceptually interesting (and ridiculous). Well, unless you're reading Black Fleet Crisis, where he spends three books preparing to lube up and wrestle a wall naked, with Lobot.

It's about the only camera trick in the movie that stands out to me, which I had never seen before but now I see everywhere. I guess maybe AOTC brought the type of shot back and made it mainstream again? I'm not familiar with any films from the 60s/70s that use that camera technique, or at least, use it in the way I am thinking of.

Part of the reason it spread was that the same animators / animation studios worked on a lot of different projects

I have a feeling Attack of the Clones was in production long before Firefly, but then this is the internet where Joss Whedon has a giant fanbase so obviously they would attribute the magical snap zoom effect to him. So it spreads the same way A113 animators mark their work. Interesting. Speaking of that, has anyone ever hidden the A113 tag in aurebesh somewhere?

I do remember Whedon saying in some interview that they went to see AotC while shooting Firefly, and he was mad because he wanted to be the guy who was combining western stuff like lens flares and snap zooms with sci-.

Japanese trailer is up. Some new scenes.
Also, since they put it in the trailer, here's the big new content: Mads Mikkelsen's character, Jyn Erso's father, is the one who leaked the Death Star's existence to the Rebellion. If I decide to do some headscratching, I assume this is why we will see Jyn disguised as a Tie Pilot, to rescue her father from the Imperials, as well as why she was chosen for the mission to begin with.

Just read Lords of the Sith by Paul Kemp. It was a fun quick read at 285 pages although like a lot of star wars books recently it feels very inconsequential. It is helped by the fact that is pretty much just a fast paced action adventure where Vader acts like a completely unstoppable bad rear end for most of the book.

I'm thinking about reading the aftermath trilogy next although I have heard a ton of bad things. I think the new canon is going to continue to be slightly disappointing because Disney does not want to tread on the new movies, which means we will probably continue to get inconsequential side stories. What I can't figure out is why they don't make a few adult focused novels that flesh out the background and setting of The Force Awakens. A Captain Phasma novel would be great as it could show us information about Snoke, The first Order, and the galaxy before TFA. I would even settle for a Tales from Maz Kanata's bar set of short stories, or a Tales from Nima Outpost. I really liked the old Tales books.
