So the real-life Garrett Bobby Ferguson sued Cartoon Network for creating a character in his image, but was shut down by the judge. The quotes from the ruling are fantastic:quote:"The television character does not match the plaintiff in appearance," Thompson ruled (via AP). "GBF appears as a non-human creature, a giant floating head with no body from outer space, while Plaintiff is a human being.

He still tries to be relevant, lmao. I think they had a character based on him in Pixels, too.

I would have thought it would have been ok under parodying a celebrity but saying that technically the character doesn't have a body and also it does a cartoon thing so it couldn't possibly look like him when the caricature is obvious seems incredibly dumb. quote:Cartoon Network is protected over any similarity of its character to Mitchell due to First Amendment laws (ensuring free speech) and the free right to parody. That sounds much better but IANAL.

Not quite as good as when the Supreme Court regularly watched porn to determine what is and isn't art, but really, nothing is and ever will be. We will have to settle for judges watching cartoons of heads literally exploding when characters break an arcade high score.

Ha, two of the Chinese students were named Kobe and LeBron. Nice nod to the fact that the NBA is a religion and Stephon Marbury is more or less a god in China. Also I watched the Regular Show movie and one of the clocks on Father Time said "4:21." They want to use the real number in an episode so bad. Rigby's plot has been really good and I'm enjoying watching the writers develop him further as a person instead of just Mordecai's goofy side kick loser friend.

The whole Mordecai/Margaret/CJ thing was horrible and was stretched out to unbelievable levels. I have no idea why they decided to go down the route they did with his character but he feels a lot worse for it.

Judging by that moment in "Just Friends" where the chef at the Japanese restaurant asks why Mordecai and Margaret can't decide what to do with each other, I think the creators were kinda sick of it too, at least in retrospect.

Y-Hat posted:To be fair, there wasn't much to Margaret as a character for most of the show outside of "object of Mordecai's affection." Yeah she started out as something similar to The Little Red Haired Girl in Peanuts, the eternally unobtainable object of the main character's affection. Then they decided to give her more of a personality which was fine so that she was less of an thing and more of an actual character. However from there I guess they didn't want Mordecai having a girlfriend for whatever reason and had her go to college for like a semester and she returned to a full job as a reporter which was weird. Personally I think it was a case of conflicting writers each wanting the story to go in a different direction where some wanted her to gracefully exit the plot (I think the shirt returning one would have been a good end to her story in context of the show) and then move on the CJ being important while other were committed to getting Margaret back and maybe some thought (wrongly) the love triangle was actually interesting. It's REALLY dragged on and has soured me on the show a good deal. It doesn't help that I think CJ was just a more interesting and fun character overall and they wasted a lot of effort with the constant break up and reconciliation episodes just to throw her away. xcheopis posted:It's completely ruined Margaret's character for me. Yeah I kinda just skipped episodes involving her for a while since they were getting terrible as she was used so badly. She "worked" as the girlfriend that Mordecai could never have when it set up stupid plots where he tries to win her over but once they decided to make her something more than that the Schrodinger's relationship they cooked up needed to be resolved one way or the other. It reminds me of one of the seasons of Adventure Time where like the last third of the season was almost entirely taken up with more nearly-identical episodes about Finn getting over his breakup with Flame Princess than they had ever spent on the relationship itself.

Flame Princess was the Margaret of Adventure Time, another character that served almost entirely to be an object of affection, dragged out over way too many episodes, that they forgot to give any characterization or any reason for the viewer to like or care about them.

The core advantage of a cartoon is that you can have anything happen in it, unbound by physical reality and budget considerations. Thus the bitterest blow is one plot taking over the cartoon. BravestOfTheLamps fucked around with this message at 16:38 on Dec 31, 2015 |
