I'm looking to upgrade Android on my rooted 2012 Nexus 7. It's currently on 4.2 with clockwork recovery and superSU, and it would be nice if I could upgrade it without having to backup/restore everything I have installed. If I try to upgrade using the standard system update thing, clockwork notifies me when it reboots and asks if I want to install it but then it won't go through the upgrade with some error message that I can't check right now because I don't have my charger with me. What's the easiest way to do this?

Just look up your phone/tablet on the xda-developers forum. If what you need isn't on there you're probably SOL. Usually it's something like Unlock Bootloader > Install Recovery > Install new ROM (if you want) and OpenGapps or similar > Install Magisk (the actual root thingy).
