Someone has been releasing the BD version of Shin Mazinger with English subs. I'm not aware that there's any blog, all the links I've seen were posted on /m/ by SantaBla !BcI83yhr6Y

1: http://www.multiupload.com/44TF7MCEMJ
2: http://www.multiupload.com/3NSBCX9OKA
3: http://www.multiupload.com/ERZA2ZRBB5
4: http://www.multiupload.com/F2ATXR0FTK

Even though I watched Gattai's version back then, I've had a blast rewatching these.

Edit: I found the release thread here.

Edit 2: Replaced the link for episode 1.

I was waiting for more episodes to be released, but guess I might as well link to episode 6 of Shin Mazinger if you haven't downloaded it yet.

It's fun to be watching the show again like this, there's an awful lot of things I didn't quite catch the first time around.

Even Gattai's version is incomplete, since Bandai stopped streaming the version without missing content about halfway through the series, so there was no additional content to splice in. It's an extra few minutes per episode so yes it's a big deal.

Yeah, I'm watching it as well, along with Aquarion EVOL. Maybe it's because I don't watch much anime outside mecha and sci-fi stuff, but Rinne's main character Madoka cracks me up. I definitely agree about the show being pretty.

It ends in a manner very similar to the Mazinger Z TV series. Two Mikene beasts come out and completely overwhelm Mazinger and his allies. Kouji was barely able to put up a fight before being defeated in a humiliating manner. Great Mazinger comes out and annihilates the beasts. Personally I much prefer Mazinger Z vs Ankoku Daishogun, which is pretty much a retelling of Mazinger Z's ending, except that Kouji gets to actually put up a fight. It would probably bother people a lot less if there had been a sequel announced.

I don't know about shaky status. I'm really pleased that any of this is getting fansubbed. I remember when I began playing the fan patched Super Robot Wars 3, and not recognizing the vast majority of the units involved, except for vague notions that some were Gundams, while others came from 70s super robot shows. Today, I just watched an episode of J-Decker and GEAR Fighter Dendoh, while adding to my queue a batch torrent of the first 20 episodes of Super Dimensional Century Orguss. :stare:

I was reminded of the following: when I first played the English patched Super Robot Wars 3, and I wasn't too familiar with all the robots involved, Getter Robo's sprite really made it seem like Getter Ray was shot from its fingertip.

Other than Shin Mazinger have there been any other decent super robot shows in like the last five or six years that I've missed?

There have been very few shows of that nature lately.

One that comes to mind is Koutetsushin Jeeg, and even then don't expect too much. Personally I liked it, as it was equal parts goofy and serious business, or as serious as super robot shows get anyway. However if you enjoy Mazinger, Getter Robo, and the like, there's no reason not to watch this. Also, I remember being amused by a promo featuring Go Nagai asking us to please watch the show.

Another super robot show was REIDEEN, which was completely unlike what I expected. (I expected a remake of Yuusha Raiden). There's no lack of people that despise it, but I enjoyed the slice-of-life aspect and the small bits of comedy throughout. I wish there had been more of a focus on a central storyline, instead of shoving in everything at the last minute.

There have been two Super Robot Wars anime, with plenty of super robot antics, I assume you saw them.

I haven't even seen anyone talk about it one way or the other.

It's just the circles I move in, I suppose. It probably didn't help that it aired at about the same time as mecha shows like TTGL. In retrospect, probably the one thing I enjoyed the most was the soundtrack.

Can't help but notice they're starting with the first episode, whereas 10 episodes have already been subtitled by Blue Fixer (and was then dropped). From what I've read of the manga, it seems to be more faithful, but it's also a little bit dull. What's compelling in a manga doesn't always translate very well to an anime I suppose.

I was only going by hearsay as well, I had the raw's at one point but never got around to watching them. Nyaa has a couple of translated episodes listed, but no seeds, natch. I seem to remember it airing on a premium channel or maybe some sort of pay per view thing so no-one subbed it when it first came out and and then it disappeared into the aether.

I usually love Chiaka Konaka's stuff, so I was always surprised at its reputation.

I watched the first episode, and what I primarily remember was that Giant Robo has a pilot inside it, rather than being remotely controlled. Otherwise there was just too little to go on about whether it was "good" or "bad." I remember reading that the subber stopped due to hardly anyone showing interest, but that was just a rumor so take that with a grain of salt.

I've only played a single route but the porn scenes I've been exposed to are uniformly ridiculous, except for one which was downright appalling, and likely intentionally so as it was rape attempt. However the rest of the time, it's pretty much a giant robot show with supernatural overtones and the usual anime hijinx.

Are there really that many instances of that? Usually in GaoGaiGar, when a new tool is introduced, they end up using it several more times. Often with its own specific theme song!

Watching every episode also helped me notice how the opening changes gradually as they introduce new characters. Or the way that they tried to set up some sort of mystery, or a small cliffhangar, with just about every episode, to hook you into watching the next.

Really, two things got me into anime, the cartoons I'd watch as a kid (like "Goldorak" or "Albator" on some channels we got from Quebec over here in New-Brunswick), and later all those violent OVAs like Genocyber or Devilman. Tekkaman Blade has a serious case of the 90s. Unfortunately it gets worse before it gets better, as the animation quality drops somewhere in the middle. But when the animation improves, it's like day and night. I agree with Kanos, the last several episodes were worth it.
