I went to the local Steelcase and Herman Miller showrooms today to try stuff out.

I liked the Aeron size C, especially with posture fit and the adjustable arm rests, and the Leap v2 (and the Embody but it doesn't look like there's any way I'd find that in my price range).

I was wondering if any other tall people had experience with using either chair for a long while, or other chairs they'd recommend. It looks like I can find the Leap v2 for about ~300-400, and the Aeron size C for about ~500 on the low end, so barring any input one way or the other on which holds up better long term I'm leaning towards the former.

I'm 6'3" and found the Aeron C to be comfy. Steelcase does make big& tall versions of the Leap and Criterion chairs (the "plus" versions), but they're a lot harder to find on the used market.

Yeah, I heard about those but had a hell of a time finding them used. The person I talked to at the steelcase showroom also mentioned a tall version with the same width as the normative chairs but a higher back, but I can't find that for the life of me. I think I'll go ahead with the size c for now then, sounds like that's the best option at my price point.

Someday I'll try out one of those other chairs, either a) when work lets me buy a chair or b) when I get a better full time job, which I guess will hopefully happen at the same time.

So I've had an Amia and a Leap for a few years now. I do like them, I understand the appeal. I also tried and tried and tried to love them, but I just cant get over how relatively low the back is. It gets to the point where if I just really want my head supported ill literally slide my rear end all the way down so my head rests on the edge of the chair. Obviously bad posture, definitely not comfortable.

I'm not really willing to spend the (in my honest opinion) ridiculous price difference for a version of the leap with a headrest or simply a higher back. I saw some discussion of higher backed chairs but I'm not sure I saw any cheaper recommendations. Is there a go-to suggestion for this need? I'm not necessarily looking for one with a headrest height back but I just want it to be at least over my shoulder (I am 6'2"), though I have no other real dimensional requirements. Hell, I have somewhat of an iron rear end, overall comfort isn't even a huge priority for me - but ergonomics are. I know I'll have to sacrifice some going from a good chair to what will most likely be a mediocre chair but if at all possible I want to avoid chain-store specials for the rest of my life as well

Thanks Ants

From some quick research, there's not too much difference between the two, correct?

The fabric backrest is optional. It's a Mirra 1 because you can see the fixing where the seat meets the arm rest support. This is smooth on the Mirra 2.

I actually ordered a dxracer but was too embarrassed to say so. Mostly cause it was the nicer one with proper armrests and $240

Turns out they mislisted the price on houzzz and canceled it a week later lol

There isn't. Sadly at work we now have a conference room full of them and they're not comfortable at all. Definitely not more comfortable for extended periods of time like a chair designed for the workplace.

It is amusing that everyone has taken off the lumbar support that is normally a part of the DX Racer because it just makes things so goddamned uncomfortable.

OK I got my Mirra 1, but I've noticed that it doesn't have a tilt-limit lever. It looks like they are not for sale anywhere, so I'm going to have to get used to it, or jerry rig a solution.

I don't see how there isn't appeal for car style seats. Seats that they visually emulate are the most comfortable seats there are. The only issue is its doubtful they actually do copy them reasonably well.

They are aesthetically not ideal though lol. But that isn't going to stop me from buying a chair I otherwise would like.

but they emulate racecar seats, not seats from a Bentley. Race car seats aren't the most comfortable, they're for safety.

I think they pretend to look like "sporty" bolstered seats, which are very comfortable. Actual track seats look very different and are indeed uncomfortable as hell. But bolsters (the only real car seat feature in reality on these chairs) are not uncomfortable. They are very comfortable. In fact, if I could pull out a standard say, recaro OEM seat and the like, and slap it to a base I would think that would be my dream chair. But then the arms suck, the piston sucks, and so on. I just want to keep my 3d arms :(

But nonetheless I kind of doubt theyre really like those seats. I dunno as I've never sat in a real one but the price is indication enough.

Indication of what? The 'gamer' market is full of overpriced stuff that looks like it goes fast. DXRacer has just given out chairs to youtubers as marketing and it's worked very well (except Dmitri wasn't that impressed) convincing people that they're the go-to high end chair.

The price, which I assume is even more full of markup than the typical extreme office chair markup, is too low for them to really be "comfortable car seats" that they are trying to look like. So its bleak. I was willing to try it out at $240 but not full price.

As a heavier dude, the DXRacer has probably the most comfortable/best actual seat out of any chair i've owned for an extended period of time, and it's built as solid as a brick shithouse so I feel comfortable with it taking my weight and leaning back on it.

It also helps that it is one of the few chairs pretty much available globally without huge regional markups because there's no way I'm spending $1k+ on a computer chair.
