Dragon Quest 8 is listed as "Playable" in PCSX2, and if your computer is powerful enough you'll probably be able to get it to run faster than real-time.

I don't think I would've got through 8 without doubling the speed in battle and on the world map. I like the game but it's looooong and the animations take forever. Plus if you emulate it with a good enough system you can render it at 2x or 4x the resolution which looks amazing even if it does screw up some of the text.

BadAstronaut posted:

Cool - I meant specifically the speedup button being mapped to something on the controller to do away with combat animations and so on. :)

I just googled it and it doesn't seem possible to map frameskip to a joypad button. But F4 will turn it on and off so you could probably just hit it when you need to if you keep your computer out. Also late in the game when you need to chase the big birds shadow and at any of the sepia toned falshbacks you need to activate software rendering in order for it to show the scenes or the shadow.

Are points really that scarce though? I'm pretty sure I filled out three trees all the way on my playthrough.

Anyways if you have the patience to savescum to get the gringham whip in the casino make sure you put enough points into whips for Jessica to get Twin Dragon Lash. That attack and whip single handedly made her my biggest damage dealer. She was regularly doing three to four times as much damage a turn as Yangus and Hero put together.

The only skills I can remember that you should avoid completely are the club skills for Yangus which are widely considered inferior to both axe and scythe. I might go axe though as the Executioner ability is very useful for felling metal slimes.

Yeah I was curious and just checked the file I beat the game on. My guys were between level 49 and 46 and each had two maxed out skill trees and one with about 30 to 40 points in it. That is of course without spending any points in their other skills.

Does this series have any better games than DQ9 that can be played on 3DS?

DQ9 has been pretty linear so far, but I'm mostly disappointed with the slow-paced combat and leveling. They put a lot of work into these combat animations that I just cannot care about.

Dragon quest 4,5, and 6. I don't know if you'll like them if you don't like dragon quest 9 though.

Okay, so I've been interested in getting into DQ, and it seems like the four DS ones are the best place to start. There's a Gamestop about half an hour from where I am that has 4 for 15.00, and one that's a 20-minute walk away with 6 for :20bux:, so I can get both of those for a completely reasonable amount. The problem is going to be tracking down 5. There aren't any Gamestops nearby with a copy, and both Amazon and Ebay are selling it for disgusting prices. Does anyone know of a good way to get DQ5 for anything under 30.00?

Do you have any local game shops? That's how I managed to pick up my copy for only twenty bucks.

I just want to ask this thread. Do you guys speed up the gameplay when you play these games. I've only actually played eight and four but while I had a grand time playing four in the normal way. Playing eight at regular speed was almost unbearable. That's not to say it wasn't fun, I was having a blast, but between all the animations and the encounter rate and all the dungeons I had to put the base game at 2x speed in my emulator and had it set to speed up to 4x when I was just walking around the world for my sanity and even with all that I still ended up clocking like 80 hours real time.

Is 9 just not a good game? I never really see anyone talking about it. I'm almost done with V and I want to know if it's worth picking up on the cheap.

Gaius Marius
Oct 9, 2012

That's honestly pretty dissapointing. DQ isn't exactly known for it's amazing stories but I've only played 4,5 and 8 and one of my favorite things about them is the interesting ways they frame the narrative. Oh well if I'm still on a DQ kick I'll probably play it after 7...which if it's reputation is to be believed will keep me busy for decades.

Man I went back to hay after recruiting Saber and all the villagers thought I was in cahoots to extort them. It's the only time I wish DQ didn't have a silent protagonist so I could explain the situation to them.

I didn't even realize there was a max level. I want to ask the thread I think I'm going to switch it up after beating V so I don't get burned out. And V has got me in a monster raising mood, of the monsters series in english Is joker 2 my best bet or do the Gameboy games hold up. When I was a kid I had a friend who was adamant that they were better than pokemon and I'm sort of curious if he was right.
