I think a character can be made bad, but what is an example of an intrinsically bad character?

I know comparatively little about the game, but the one that comes to mind is Sean. He was ridiculously good in 2I, so they hit him with the nerf bat so hard in 3S he has moves that are negative on hit.

Also, early incarnations of Dan. If you wanna get more technical about it, there are characters like SSFIV T.Hawk, who are like Gief but shittier in almost every conceivable way. He's supposed to be a Gief with a slightly easier time getting in but a slightly worse SPD, but spire is poo poo and dive is much worse than it was in ST, so he mostly just ends up sucking hard.

Capcom at least already has expert tournament level players for an internal testing team that plays the poo poo out of the games during development and offers their thoughts on game balance and bugs and stuff.

For example, they are nerfing snapbacks in UMVC3 even though the player community hadn't really done too much creative stuff with them, based on stuff the internal testers found.

Seth has also dropped hints that there's some anti-Phoenix strat that the community at large hasn't figured out, hasn't he? If these things are removed for Ultimate, I gotta say, I really wanna see them.

The MK9 tournament scene has not struggled at all, its attendances at majors relative to the attendances for other games have been increasing since Evo, where it already made a strong showing (500 people, most popular game after AE and MvC3). Why do people think this? Just because it isn't on streams?

If you had asked me, I would have thought it was struggling just because of that one random Avoid the Puddle contest where they basically bitched about the tournament scene for an hour or so. Obviously not scientific or anything, but if you're not really involved in one of the major scenes, it's hard to get a bead on these things. Of course, I probably wouldn't volunteer information about the scene. :shobon:

Hey I know we're past tourney chat, but has anyone ever experimented with running a Swiss style tournament, power matching a few matches on the end, then running a small single slim bracket to determine the top place? It may take more time depending on how many people are involved, but more guaranteed matches for everyone sorta offsets that.

I've always wondered about this sentiment. Given that GG and BB share a very similar skeleton on a very basic level (bursts, super meter, faultless guard, roman cancel, super anime art style, etc), why is there such confidence that a new GG wouldn't have the same problems as BB?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I'm one of the assholes who started playing fighting games with HDR, so I really don't have a lot of good hands on time with GG.

The problem is it's a My Little Pony game and literally every character is a Pony and shaped like a Pony as is generally a singular color which makes it the a game next to "hitboxes: the game" in its capability of conveying information.

It's like the biggest waste of resources ever used.

I don't think this is an objective problem though. There's also the possibility of non-ponies being playable (are there non-pony characters in the show? I don't know.)

If the game is good at all, I welcome something replacing AH3 for the best "embarrassing to be seen playing" game.

My personal problem with FiM is that it's a weapon fighter where the weapons aren't visible until they're being swung. Epyon has a whip? Cool. Parasoul can poke you across the screen? Fine. Kabal has really good range? Fair enough. Hibiki can confirm from 2 character widths? All right. Jedah, Eagle, Donovan, RX-78, Twinzam V, Hayato, Omega Red, Kenshi, the list goes on. The only times you'll see a fighter revolve around moves that materialise out of thin air more than a fraction of the time are in MUGEN.

And if the characters mentioned don't convince you that unexpected ranges are all over the place in fighting games, don't forget the representative from ST, Dhalsim.

Another thing that isn't a complete ripoff of another game was kind of an odd idea I had as a kid. You know how in F-Zero X and GX, the only stats that varied between cars were grip, boost, armor, and weight, while you could set max speed vs. acceleration on a slider? I thought it would be interesting if you had a fighting game with that same idea, only you could set a slider between something like armor/health and speed. Maybe even mid-match using a universal stance change move or something.

Cosmic carnage sorta did that with a light/heavy armor system for half it's characters, but I'm also pretty sure that game was poo poo.
