Dorothea Brooke posted:Anybody feel free to correct me, but I'd be shocked if there were any rule of thumb or one-size-fits-all approach to how much time someone should spend in the minors and what levels. I think it's safe to say that development CAN be stunted by rushing a prospect -- if they're just not ready for a level and they're getting blown away it's hard to say how much they're learning. My father for years has said he thinks it's best if a player gets a chance to dominate at a level, and that they should generally spent one year at each level of the minors. Lots of prospect guys simply answer this by saying players should be allowed to dictate their own promotions with their play. I think the short answer is: Baseball is so complicated and weird and no two prospects are the same. Each one's going to need different things to maximize the returns on their talent.

I agree that "rushing" is absolutely a case-by-case thing. If a dude has a sick fastball and changeup, but it turns out there are tiny changes in his delivery and you make him a starter, once people figure out how to spot the differences he'll get shelled and oops he has no 3rd pitch to rely on. He got rushed. He didn't get rushed because his pitches weren't good enough, it's because his mechanics needed refinement. Obviously the MiLB team owners would like to have a winning team, but there is more an emphasis on learning. If a High A club throws three guys who grade out to be "starters" 2+ innings each in a game because they have stuff to work on, who cares? A lot of the time at that level something like a setup man and closer don't exist because they're all so raw that pegging them that way is detrimental. Or what if a dude was a shortstop, but the ML team thinks he has a future as a center fielder? His bat isn't rushed, but maybe his fielding would be. Hooray I've finally made a contribution. The StarTribune is trying to hype up Trevor Plouffe as the next Michael Cuddyer (versatility! ). I'm sure his defense is about the same, but outside of his glorious Ruthian AAA numbers last year (Which there's a 99% means nothing) he's looked like a stone cold bust. It's Spring Training so I guess they have to write about something. Best shape of his life.

So, I used to be a big baseball fan growing up, played it, loved the Jays, bought all the video games, etc.. But after years of the Jays not making the playoff due the stupid as gently caress playoff structure (NY wins division, BOS wins wildcard, repeat ad nauseum) I boycotted it. My brother in-law and a couple buddies have been pushing me to get back into it since there's a new playoff structure (someone give me a quick synopsis of how this works? Just a couple extra wild cards?) and apparently the Jays have a really good team. Why (if at all) should I be excited for the Jays this year and who should I be looking out for? Is there actually a chance they make the playoffs? Thanks in advance.

Just a couple extra wild cards?) and apparently the Jays have a really good team. Why (if at all) should I be excited for the Jays this year and who should I be looking out for? Is there actually a chance they make the playoffs? Thanks in advance. Example: ALE: NYY (2) ALC: DET (1) ALW: ANA (3) WC: BOS (4) WC2: TOR (5) In this example team 5 would have to play team 4. The winner of this game would play team 1 in the playoffs. The new system may be more exciting for teams that have difficulty winning a division, or even being second place in their division. Finishing 5th is no longer a death sentence. The Jays are a team on the rise, but they're probably another year or two out before the full squad is probably capable of challenging the ALE crown, but they could slide in as a wild card. For a team with so much money in FA, they surprisingly didn't spend a lot. Notable players: Jose Bautista (home run God), Brett Lawrie (new kid on the block, has a good amount of upside), and Ricky Romero (a good young pitcher). A more complete write up: here.
