Proxy Guide for MLB.TV!

To get around the obnoxious blackout restrictions you can use a proxy during the sign in process for MLB.TV. Once you have gotten past the "verifying geographical location" step when you're loading up a game you can shut it off. Chrome and Firefox instructions are below.

Chrome
1.) Install the Proxy Switchy! Extension for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/caehdcpeofiiigpdhbabniblemipncjj

2.) After you've installed it there will be a nice little globe to the right of the address bar:

3.)Click the globe then Options. This will bring up the screen below. In profile name type something (I use MLB but it really doesn't matter!).

4.) Get a proxy from here (http://www.proxy-list.org/en/index.php) and select SSL and Anonymous + Elite under type. Make sure you enter you the captcha phrase after scrolling down (see screenshot) and then click enter. Look for sites with 100% uptime.

Results:

5.) After you have the ip address you need and port number enter it under HTTPS Proxy & Port then click save. Make sure your options look exactly like this screenshot (besides the ip address/port)

6.) Click on the globe at the top right and select MLB or whatever your called the profile name.

7.) To see if the proxy is working browse to https://www.google.com. If Google comes up, yay! Otherwise, you'll get the error message below and you'll need to try a different proxy

8.) Log on to http://mlb.mlb.com/mediacenter and try to open your game. If you get a technical error or it times out the proxy you're using isn't working. Try another. Other than that should pop right up.

9.) After you're done logging on/have the game started you should click on the globe again to hit "direct connection" so your internet isn't going through some unknown proxy.

Firefox

1.) Install the FoxyProxy Extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxyproxy-standard/?src=hp-dl-featured)

2.) After you install it you'll have a nice little fox between your address bar and search bar

3.) Get a proxy from here (http://www.proxy-list.org/en/index.php) and select SSL and Anonymous + Elite under type. Make sure you enter you the captcha phrase after scrolling down (see screenshot) and then click enter. Look for sites with 100% uptime.

Results:

4.) Click on the FoxyProxy icon and then add new Proxy. Enter the IP address and port of the proxy you picked from step 3.

5.) Click on the URL Patterns tab at the top. For pattern name enter mlb.tv. For URL Pattern enter what's in the screenshot. Make sure the rest of the options match the below screenshot

6.) Click on the general tab. For proxy name I'd select mlb.tv. Click OK

7.) On the drop down box under Select Mode select "use proxies based on their pre-defined patterns and priorities".

8.) Log on to http://mlb.mlb.com/mediacenter and try to open your game. If you get a technical error or it times out the proxy you're using isn't working. Try another. Other than that should pop right up.

To switch proxies in Firefox
1.) To switch proxies in case the one you are on stopped working click the foxy proxy icon

2.) Select mlb.tv and click edit selection

3.) Click on the Proxy Details tab and edit the New IP address & Port. Click OK then close.

Misc

I haven't used them but FoxyProxy (http://getfoxyproxy.org/) offers a Firefox & chrome extension plus - for money - proxy servers for you to use in different countries with guaranteed up time, etc.

Is there proof that players develop/improve faster in the minors than in the majors?

Anybody feel free to correct me, but I'd be shocked if there were any rule of thumb or one-size-fits-all approach to how much time someone should spend in the minors and what levels.

I think it's safe to say that development CAN be stunted by rushing a prospect -- if they're just not ready for a level and they're getting blown away it's hard to say how much they're learning.

My father for years has said he thinks it's best if a player gets a chance to dominate at a level, and that they should generally spent one year at each level of the minors. Lots of prospect guys simply answer this by saying players should be allowed to dictate their own promotions with their play.

I think the short answer is:
Baseball is so complicated and weird and no two prospects are the same. Each one's going to need different things to maximize the returns on their talent.

I agree that "rushing" is absolutely a case-by-case thing. If a dude has a sick fastball and changeup, but it turns out there are tiny changes in his delivery and you make him a starter, once people figure out how to spot the differences he'll get shelled and oops he has no 3rd pitch to rely on. He got rushed. He didn't get rushed because his pitches weren't good enough, it's because his mechanics needed refinement.

Obviously the MiLB team owners would like to have a winning team, but there is more an emphasis on learning. If a High A club throws three guys who grade out to be "starters" 2+ innings each in a game because they have stuff to work on, who cares? A lot of the time at that level something like a setup man and closer don't exist because they're all so raw that pegging them that way is detrimental.

Or what if a dude was a shortstop, but the ML team thinks he has a future as a center fielder? His bat isn't rushed, but maybe his fielding would be.

The new playoff structure will work pretty similarly to the old system. Except the team that used to be automatically in the playoffs as the wild card needs to play a game against the 5th best team.

Example:
ALE: NYY (2)
ALC: DET (1)
ALW: ANA (3)
WC: BOS (4)
WC2: TOR (5)

In this example team 5 would have to play team 4. The winner of this game would play team 1 in the playoffs. The new system may be more exciting for teams that have difficulty winning a division, or even being second place in their division. Finishing 5th is no longer a death sentence.

The Jays are a team on the rise, but they're probably another year or two out before the full squad is probably capable of challenging the ALE crown, but they could slide in as a wild card. For a team with so much money in FA, they surprisingly didn't spend a lot.

Notable players: Jose Bautista (home run God), Brett Lawrie (new kid on the block, has a good amount of upside), and Ricky Romero (a good young pitcher).

A more complete write up: here.
