A lot of them have a serious catch, such as requiring that you put out videos every weekday or something, and generally they'll treat you like a cog in their machine. If you want to make money on your videos, go for it, that's your right and honestly I think more LPers should do that since I feel it'll generally raise the bar on what we get out of LPs. But I kinda think it'd be a better idea to work on building some of your own infrastructure first so you have the basing to say to the more shady fucks "I don't NEED your kind here." I had no intention of partnering with any channel, it isn't worth it in the end. I was going to YouTube partner and monetize some videos as an experiment, but I can't justify making people watch ads before videos to myself.

A lot of bad stuff in it. For instance, no twitch streaming. You are restricted from using any video streaming service other than youtube's live stream which sucks. You have to promote Machinima through social media likes on facebook, retweets on twitter and likes to their vids on youtube and putting their channel in your recommended list. And what makes this especially heinous is they offer you yourself no promotion unless you are already big. Another thing is the three year contract lock in. In the past they have signed people forever to Machinima with no way to leave and forced their smaller partners to accept a smaller revenue share.

My knowledge of contract law is pretty limited, and Canadian contract law to boot, but I'm pretty sure those lifetime Machinima contracts would not be enforceable. Especially if they are getting teenagers to sign.

Other than Freeman's Mind, the one I'm most familiar with is Unit Lost. Which, again, comes off a little whiny and silly at times, but it's bound to sound like that when you're getting hosed by a company. Basically, unless you're a huge channel you get no support. And the best part is they signed the contract that didn't say "in perpetuity" (because who the gently caress signs a probably illegal contract for forever?) and when they tried to pull out Machnima flat out told them "we're not releasing people from contracts at this time." e: Though I doubt it's just Machinima. I've heard horror stories about That Guy With the Glasses Too who are apparently better to work for and nice people and all, but make fucktarded management decisions and refuse to do basic things like give their content providers basic tools to increase the average quality of content on their network. As well as having horrible release scheduling (I've heard tales of releases getting delayed for weeks) I think internet video businesses in general just have no idea what they're doing. This was all hidden in the middle of a bunch of legalese, so most people couldn't figure this out even if they read the full contract. Think the contracts directors used to force actors to sign in the early days of film, and you've basically got the machinima contracts. I'd just upload a lot obscene porn and plaster Machinima's name all over it.

Well since we're on the issue of YouTube bullshit, I've got a hosting/content question for you fine folks. I'm not really sure what route to take on it, so I figure I'd seek some outside advice on it. It's related to the hybrid LP of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire Blind Sally mentioned a few posts up. One of the videos we're uploading is a short 2-minute long humorous introductory video for the LP that parodies the standard Star Wars title crawl which lays out what the gimmick of the LP is about. It's got no gameplay footage or commentary over it, and honestly isn't all that important but I'd like to include it as a little bonus just to try and scrub as much of the -stink off our first VLP ever. The problem is YouTube flagged it with ContentID because it uses the intro music from Star Wars, and I imagine DailyMotion, our other chosen video host will too. I paid for the music file I used in the video from iTunes, but I know that amounts to jack poo poo in the realm of internet copyright and what not. I'm also not sure if if I have a strong enough case that it's covered under fair use or parody/satire, but it did give me the option to acknowledge that I used it and let Sony Music Entertainment monetize the video with ads and links to purchase the song elsewhere. So what I want to know is are there any hosting workarounds or alternatives available to me (outside of do-it-yourself hosting), or is it just a case of "don't do it, you idiot" and leave it out of the LP. I'm just wondering what my options are here.

To Stalingrad and Back! Let's Play Unity of Command Unity of Command is a simple operational-level WWII wargame developed by indie studio 2x2 Games and released nearly a year ago. On release, the game was highly praised for how incredibly accessible it is for a wargame. It has few complex mechanics and the emphasis is on broad strategic planning and effective use of your resources rather than mucking about with spreadsheets and nitpicky details. Some grognards consider it more of a puzzle game than a true wargame but the game's systems and AI are still deep enough to provide satisfying play and it doesn't cost $100. UoC initially covered a thin slice of the war, specifically the Stalingrad campaign from 1942 to '43 from both the Axis and Soviet perspectives with a handful of hypothetical scenarios. The Red Turn DLC added a '43-'45 campaign focused on the Soviet drive to Berlin while an upcoming DLC will detail the initial German invasion in '41. I intend to cover all of the currently available scenarios in chronological order and providing some real historical context to the battles I'll be fighting. I am purely an amateur historian so if any more educated goons want to jump in, feel free! http://lpix.org/sslptest/index.php?id=15926 Known issues: Got a little lazy with screenshotting and missed some important bits. Don't have the historical context bits. Should probably spread the mechanic explanations out a bit more. I'll probably ameliorate that by covering the smaller Crimea scenario first in the thread. For some reason the Hungarian part of the Hungarian-German comparison didn't crop, not a big deal since I'll be redoing this scenario anyway. I played like poo poo.

Hey, I wanted to get some opinions on how to best update my recording hardware. I've been using Razer Moray+ up until now, and I'm not really very knowledgeable when it comes to pick and choosing audio devices. The main reason I got these earphone-mic-combo-set was just because it came with interchangeable plugs that allow connection to three different kinds of devices, anyway... I've gotten or seen recommendations for Turtle Beach Headsets, a couple of the different kinds of Blue Microphones, and the Samson C01UCW. I don't really know what the pros and cons between them ultimately are aside from price and that the standalone microphones are apparently also suited for podcasts according to some places. I'm also a little worried that my real issue might just be incorrect settings chosen in Windows/Realtek HD Audio Manager or just the audio drivers, since the same microphone apparently sounds completely different on two different computers and can become intolerable on one when it's apparently using the same exact settings as the other. I'm hoping this issue might factor less into a USB-based microphone, but I don't know if that's the case.

I've been using the Blue Snowball since about May or June. I really like it, it's nice and sensitive and gives a good, clear sound. However it IS a stand mic, so it's a lot more sensitive than a headset would be. Easy enough fixes in audacity, but you just have to be wary about squeaky chairs or bumped desks.

Alright here is test update 2, I'm having issues narrating over videos. Either I'm way too drat quiet or I turn up my mic audio and there is this constant white noise. I could edit it, but the white noise comes around whenever I talk. I'll work on that some other time. As for the screenshots, I'm downsizing them from 1920x1080 to 1024x576. Is there a better way I could be doing this? I know keeping it at 1920x1080 will break some tables. Anyways: http://lpix.org/sslptest/index.php?id=15927 I'm going to stop highlighting whatever choices I make cause the green highlighting makes it harder to see the words. Is 100x100 good enough for character portraits?

Well, in the end, it was Google who put the money down and shifted the focus, and started treating it like more than simple video hosting. They're the ones who stripped away all the original features in favor of their broken, biased search and their (relatively) pointlessly invisible like/dislike system. Only the newest, hottest videos for your eyes! What's that? Want to find something old or less well known? TOO BAD! There's no option for that!

In my opinion Google is also directly responsible for the whole "use a partner for gaming videos" push, because they own part of Machinima. Unless they've sold it by now it's a rather incestuous way to cover their asses legally and make extra money (~11%) on top of the 45% cut Google normally takes from ads.

Youtube is a crappy video hosting site that wants to be a social media site, and the only redeeming thing about them is how easy it is to make an account and upload poo poo. Although with all the recent google accounts forced integration, they're making it less accessible to have an existing account, let alone make a new one. They've been confused about what they want to be for awhile now and every attempt they make to "improve" stuff only breaks things further. What's sad is that they're still infinitely better than all the competition.

Sturgeon's Law has been long in effect before Google acquired YouTube. It's outright dumb in terms of resources required and effort and money and simple business sense to give the same amount of feature and attention to every single video. Curation is outright required if you have 20,000 videos uploaded every minute or whatever the statistic is. They removed star ratings because most videos were rated 5 or 1, so it was in-effect a binary system. They hid tags from the public view because users spammed their way to the top by uploading random unrelated videos with the same tags as that day's top 15 videos, and they made video responses uploader-approved for the same reason. Building a search engine that returns relevant results for such a large corpus is a Herculean task, so I'm not surprised that it's not the best, especially when they can't pull terms directly from a video like they can do with a web page. The YouTube search engine is a completely different codebase from Google's search engine.

I can't find obscure videos I enjoy that aren't popular because of Youtube's search absolutely requiring you to go big or go home. It's all "most recent" or "highest rating" or "highest views" and the rest. I'd have found it in no time if I could sort by least views.
