Connect with Wii U goons: Nintendo Network ID thread, Wii U multiplayer and Miiverse thread

:siren:In this post: FAQ, Specs, OS, Online:siren:
:siren:In second post: Games:siren:

What is the Wii U?
The Wii U is Nintendo's next generation game console, the successor to the Wii. It was launched in November and December 2012. It comes in two different bundles. The recommended price is $299/$349 for North America, $349.95/$429.95 for Australia (no price set for Europe), and 26,260¥/31,500¥ in Japan. It supports full 1080p HD, has a new processor 20 times as powerful as the Wii, and includes the GamePad, a controller with both standard controls and a 6.2 inch touch screen as well as many other features (see under GamePad). Many games allow you to switch the gameplay to the second screen (see games list). Never have there been so many types of gameplay possible on one device. The Wii U is also backwards compatible with every Wii game and accessory (see Backwards compatibility under OS).

Can I play Wii games with the GamePad or Pro Controller, or view them on the GamePad screen?

No, the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller won't work on Wii games, WiiWare or Wii Virtual Console titles, as the system enters a Wii mode to play Wii software. However, Wii U software can make use of Wii controllers.

What are the differences between the packages?
The system is available as a Basic package in white with 8GB storage and a Deluxe (or "Premium") package in black with 32GB storage.

The basic package includes
  • Wii U console
  • GamePad
  • HDMI cable
  • Console AC adapter
  • GamePad AC adapter
  • Wii sensor bar (not included in basic package in Europe or Japan, but it can be purchased separately in a pack with the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk)

The Deluxe package includes everything in the Basic package, plus
  • Nintendo Land game disk
  • Access to Nintendo Network Premium, a reward scheme. Those who buy the Deluxe package will receive 10% back from the price of all eShop content in the form of points that can subsequently be put towards future online purchases. This lasts until the end of 2014. http://ddp.nintendo.com/
  • Charging cradle for GamePad
  • Vertical stand for console
  • Vertical stand for GamePad

A Deluxe bundle that includes the ZombiU game disk is also available.

Do all games that use remotes need Motion Plus?
No, Motion Plus is not mandatory. It just depends on the nature of the game.

Will the Motion Plus attachment for the remote work on Wii U games?
In games that were designed for Motion Plus, yes.

Is the internal hard drive replaceable?
No but you can expand your storage with any external hard drive up to 2TB.

Will it display Wii games at a higher resolution?
No, Wii compatibility works the same way as Gamecube compatibility on the Wii, in that the Wii U uses Wii hardware to run Wii games.

What is a Nintendo Network account?
It is a new account system made for the Wii U. It is a separate account to your Club Nintendo account, but the two can be linked for physical rewards on digital purchases. Note that the Wii did not have an account system. You use your NN account to buy things from the Wii U eShop, and connect with other Wii U owners.

Is it region locked?
Yes. Link

What extra controllers will I need?
Some games might require Wii Remotes for local multiplayer. Others however suport the Wii U Pro controller, which has the all the same inputs as PS3 and XBox 360 controllers (except triggers that are analogue) and is about the same price, so this is a viable alternative to Remotes.

I bought the deluxe Wii U bundle. Do I need to do anything special to activate the 10% back thing, when I buy games in the eShop?
No, all of your Wii U eShop purchases past and present will be counted and you will automatically receive 10% back in points that be redeemed for credit on the Wii U or 3DS eShop once you earn $5 worth. See https://p.nintendo.net/deluxe/ and https://p.nintendo.net/premium/

Can I transfer the content I downloaded on the Wii?
Yes. This is done with an SD card. WiiWare and Virtual Console games will be accessible through a Wii mode in the Wii U interface. You will also be able to transfer your game saves and Wii Shop Channel points, which can't be used on the eShop but can continue to be used in the Wii Shop Channel in Wii mode.

What do I need to know about transferring data?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaeYXkQX1Xc

The transfer process requires both consoles to be connected to the internet. You also need an SD card of at least 512MB. First you must access the Wii mode on the Wii U (yes, you need to already have the Wii U to start the process). Then download special software from the Wii Shop Channel on both consoles. Both consoles must be set to the same region. Changing to a different region on the Wii will erase your Shop points, so use them first if you do this. The process will transfer everything on the Wii's internal storage including Shop points except for most specialty channels, and the content will be deleted from the Wii. Games will be redownloaded on the Wii U. Multiple transfers are possible.

If you download your Virtual Console/Wiiware stuff to an SD Card, and transfer your data to your Wii U, you can still load all those games on your SD Card on your original Wii. If you decide to move stuff from your SD Card back onto your Wii after transferring, make sure you don't go to the Wii Shop Channel from your Wii, because then it will erase all the downloaded items.

Should I install the update first?
The update gives access to all the online features. However, if you choose not to install it first, it will download in the background while you play games.

The system update/system transfer is taking ages. Can I pull the plug?
Cutting the power during a system update, even an update of a specific app, can brick the console and is not recommended. Even if you lose your internet connection the update will resume, so it's better to just wait. Also, the system transfer will often stay at about 90% for a while, so don't turn off your console if this happens, you may lose data.

Will Wii Point Cards work in the Wii U shop?
Yes, the contemporary Nintendo cards are compatible with the Wii U, Wii, 3DS and DSi. However, the balance in your Wii U eShop account is different to the one in your Wii Shop Channel.

Are my Wii U eShop purchases tied to my Nintendo Network account?
Yes. Your purchases are all registered on your account, and from 2013 you will be able to make purchases from your PC and smartphone. It's just that you can only have your purchases downloadable on one console at a time. If your console is broken or stolen, you can get Nintendo to transfer your account to another console (although if it was stolen you need to prove it with a police report. No I'm serious). This may require sending the broken console to them.

What about my Wii downloads? Are they tied to my Nintendo Network ID?
Yes. Games for the Wii U Virtual Console can be purchased for a minimal price by people who own the same game in the Wii mode.

What controllers can I use for Xenoblade?
You can use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk or Wii Classic Controller.

Can it play GameCube discs?
No, nor can it use GC accessories.

If I want to play only on the GamePad screen, how close do I have to be to the console?
Generally, in the same room. Optimal performance is within 8 metres. Link.

What kind of sound can it output?
The Wii U only outputs LPCM multichannel audio. So if you want surround sound make sure your A/V receiver has HDMI in and can do HDMI LPCM 5.1 output. Dolby/DTS won't work.

What about its eShop?
The Wii U has its own eShop. All of Nintendo's games will be available on it, and all other publishers will have this option. Purchases are tied to an account, but it is not possible to play titles on another Wii U at this stage.

Will I need to use proprietary storage?
No, you can use any brand you want. USB drives up to 2TB are supported.

What connectivity does it have with the 3DS?
Miis can be transferred from a 3DS. You can't yet use your Nintendo Network ID on your 3DS or transfer eShop funds between the two, but it has been confirmed the 3DS will have the NN and Miiverse in the future. So far there aren't any games that allow the 3DS to be used as a controller for Wii U.

Is it 3D capable?
Yes. Assassin's Creed III has this feature.

DVD payback? Blu-ray playback?
No and no, however services such as Netflix and Hulu are available on the system.

The console

CPU: All new IBM POWER7-based multi-core microprocessor. the processor is a multi-core design manufactured at 45 nm with an eDRAM cache. Neither Nintendo nor IBM has revealed detailed specifications, such as the number of cores, clock rate, or cache sizes. References have been made to the chip containing "a lot" of eDRAM and "the same processor technology found in Watson".

GPU: Custom AMD Radeon High Definition GPU (GPGPU Support). The Wii U's final development kits are reported to use a custom AMD 7 Series GPU.

RAM: 2GB total; 1GB for games and 1GB for system software.

Storage: 8GB/32GB internal flash memory, expandable via SD memory cards and USB hard disk drives

Slot-loading optical disc drive compatible with 12 cm "proprietary high-density optical discs" (25 GB per layer) and 12 cm Wii optical discs

SD memory card slot (supports SDHC cards)

USB 2.0 ports (2 at front of console, 2 at rear)

Sensor Bar power port

"AV Multi Out" port

HDMI 1.4 out port

Link.

The GamePad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZvlpA7knsQ

Features
  • Direction pad
  • A, B, X and Y buttons
  • Start and Select buttons
  • L and R shoulder buttons
  • 2 clickable analogue sticks
  • ZL and ZR triggers (digital)
  • Rumble feedback
  • Home button
  • 6.2 inch resistive touch screen with built-in stylus
  • Microphone
  • Front camera
  • Wii remote sensor bar
  • Near Field Communication
  • TV Control button
  • Gyroscope
  • Accelerometer
  • Magnetometer
  • Speakers
  • Headphone/headset jack
  • Power button for console

In certain games you can play entirely on the controller's screen as long as you're close enough to the console (see games list). This feature will be accessed through the game's interface, as opposed to the OS. It also has a TV control button, which lets you use the pad as a TV remote. Up to two GamePads can be supported by the console, but Nintendo will not sell the GamePad separately until there are games that make use of this (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/13/nintendo-wii-u-gamepad-not-at-launch/). The GamePad can not be used to play Wii games, WiiWare, or Wii Virtual Console titles.

The Pro Controller

Not to be confused with the Wii Classic Controller or Wii Classic Controller Pro. The Wii U Pro Controller is a wireless accessory for those who prefer using this type of controller over the GamePad. It is available separately. It has all the same buttons as the GamePad, and up to 4 Pro Controllers are supported by the console. They use a regular USB cord to charge (one is included in the box). The Pro Controller can't be used to play Wii games, WiiWare or Wii Virtual Console titles.

First time set up and update
DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR SYSTEM DURING FIRST UPDATE OR IT COULD BE BRICKED. Auto shutoff does not apply during the download of the update, no matter the setting. Apparently if you choose not to perform the update immediately, it will download in the background while you do other stuff. The update is about 1 GB, despite gossip that it is 5 GB.

Also note there have been some freezing problems with Nintendo Land that can be corrected by manually setting the game's language to English speakers only.

Users
The console supports up to 12 users, each of whom are represented by a Mii and can have their own game save data. They can all access the same purchased eShop content. Internet Browser bookmarks and play records are also be linked to individual users.

Auto shutoff
The console automatically turns off after one hour of inactivity by default, but this can be changed in Settings.

Storage
Games can not be installed on to SD cards. After formatting the internal memory, the cheapest Wii U will have 7.2GB of its 8GB capacity (or 29GB for the 32GB model) but the console requires 4.2GB itself. USB drives requiring USB 3.0 need a Y cable that uses two USB ports. Only one USB drive can be plugged in at a time, but a fix for this is being worked on. After a USB drive is formatted for use with Wii U, it can't be used on a PC.
Official storage FAQ

Miis
You can create Miis from the camera, import Miis from 3DS or Wii, and make QR Codes for them. There is a 3000 Mii limit on the console.

Downloads
The OS also features download management. You can program downloads to start at a certain time.

Nintendo Network

The Wii U's online system.

Accounts
Users will have an account that requires a Nintendo Network ID, email address, password, gender, date of birth and location. Access to the network will be possible from all of Nintendo's hardware from now on, as well as devices such as smartphones and PCs. Iwata has said you can purchase something on your phone and remotely tell your Wii U to download it.
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/353649/wii-u-will-get-remote-purchasing-in-future/

quote:

"Our goal is that, in the future, you will also be able to purchase games found in the Miiverse from that smartphone or tablet device and, by the time you arrive home, that game will already have arrived on your Wii U system through SpotPass," he said during a recent and revealing investor Q&A.

Friends
Friend codes are abolished. You can also friend anyone from their Miiverse profile. See the Nintendo Network ID thread for details.

Communication
The Nintendo Network will provide the means for users to chat via text, voice, and video.

Wii U Chat allows video chat using the GamePad's front camera. Participants can draw on the screen in these encounters. If you're busy playing a game and you receive a call, the home button flashes, and you can answer the call by bringing up the home menu. At the moment you have to quit your game before using Wii U Chat, but Iwata says they are working on a fix for this.

Personal text based messages can be sent to friends via MiiVerse.

Voice chat is not universal and is implemented on a game-by-game basis.

The 1GB of system memory means internet and MiiVerse browsing on the GamePad is possible while playing games.

The internet browser supports up to six tabs. Flash isn't supported.

The eShop is a download service where users can buy content from their console. All of Nintendo's Wii U games will be downloadable from the eShop as well as being available in physical copies, and this option is extended to all other developers.

Publishers will be allowed for themselves to determine prices and sales on their own software.

Content is priced in local currency instead of points.

The eShop includes trailers, demos and commercials.

Also supports Miiverse.

A Virtual Console for the Wii U eShop will be launched later. http://www.slashgear.com/nintendo-details-wii-u-storage-limits-and-no-wii-gamepad-screen-play-14257022/

Backwards compatibility

The Wii U supports four Wii Remotes/Wii Remote Pluses/Wii U Pro Controllers, and one Wii Balance Board. It also supports the Motion Plus attachment for the original Wii Remote.

While you can't use Gamecube discs or accessories, Wii software is playable on the Wii U. Backwards compatibility works through the built-in Wii hardware, not software emulation. As such, it works the same way as the Wii and does not support the new controllers or additional storage. Transferring Wii software to the Wii U is done with an SD card. This process requires the transfer app to be downloaded on both the Wii and Wii U and the two consoles to be turned on and in range of each other. Everything can be transferred, including game saves and shop points (can only be used on the Wii Shop Channel). The Wii mode is accessed as an app within the Wii U OS. It is from there that you can access Wii software and the Wii Shop Channel. Note that the Wii Menu on Wii U does not have its own settings and uses the settings of the Wii U. Clicking the Wii Settings icon leads straight to Data Management. As such, the Nintendo USB Wi-Fi adapter will not work.

Wii U Virtual Console
The Wii U Virtual Console will feature NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance games. It will allow VC games to be played on the GamePad screen. http://www.slashgear.com/nintendo-details-wii-u-storage-limits-and-no-wii-gamepad-screen-play-14257022/ Games will be released progressively as they have to be emulated for the new console.

If you own the VC game in Wii mode, you can buy it if it exists on the new Virtual Console for a minimal price.

During the first half of 2013, 6 games will be made available for one month each, to own, for a cost of 30 cents/euros/pounds each. These can be purchased by anyone for this price, not just those who bought them previously. The games are:

January: Balloon Fight
February: F-Zero
March: Punch-Out
April: Kirby's Adventure
May: Super Metorid
June: Yoshi/Mario and Yoshi
July: Donkey Kong

Multiplayer
Reggie said they're going to have a flexible online system that will give developers control (http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidewalt/2011/07/05/nintendo-reggie-fils-aime-wii-u/4/).

quote:

We’ve seen what our competitors have done, and we’ve acknowledged that we need to do more online, starting with the launch of our eShop on Nintendo 3DS, and we’re going to continue to build our online capability. For Wii U, we’re going to take that one step further, and what we’re doing is creating a much more flexible system that will allow the best approaches by independent publishers to come to bear. So instead of a situation where a publisher has their own network and wants that to be the predominant platform, and having arguments with platform holders, we’re going to welcome that. We’re going to welcome that from the best and the brightest of the third party publishers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNeT99P-OUs

Miiverse is a social network powered by the Nintendo Network. It is the first thing you will see when you turn on the console. The service will later be available on the Nintendo 3DS as well as web-enabled mobile devices. Miiverse will allow users to seamlessly share achievements, comments, and hand written notes with other users. Miiverse forum posts are limited to 100 characters. Hand written notes and drawings are also allowed. Miiverse will be integrated into the system menu of the Wii U, but social interactions can also occur within supported games. Miiverse will be monitored through software as well as a human resource team in order to ensure that the content shared by users is approporiate and that no spoliers are shared. As such comments posted can take up to 30 minutes to appear on Miiverse.

Miis will interact at a nexus called Mii WaraWara, taken from the Japanese's "warawara" (the sound of things happening, in Japanese). Miis are shown clustered around various Wii U titles. This shows what games players are enjoying and what's popular. Nintendo has also showed Miis leaving in-game messages.

Even when the game isn't designed for online, the Miiverse can still connect consoles and players.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08O0G9CjcI8

A service that lets you search for shows, tells you on which services you can watch them, and then lets you watch them in that format. The program guide is personalised to each account registered on the system. You can set recordings, and view recommendations from friends or Nintendo TVii itself. It also allows your GamePad to function as a remote for your TV and DVR. Finally you can make comments on moments in shows and share them through social networks including MiiVerse.

Nintendo Land

Thread

Designed specifically as a showcase of the system's capabilities. A 12 minigame collection based on Nintendo franchises and set in a themepark. Included in the Deluxe console package and available separately. The minigames are The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest, Metroid Blast, Pikmin Adventure, Mario Chase, Luigi's Ghost Mansion, Animal Crossing: Sweet Day, Takamaru's Ninja Castle, Donkey Kong's Crash Course, Captain Falcon's Twister Race, Balloon Trip Breeze, Yoshi's Fruit Cart and Octopus Dance. I mentioned this in the console setup, but note there have been some freezing problems with Nintendo Land that can be corrected by manually setting the game's language to English speakers only.
Play without the TV: Some minigames

Droid Washington posted:

Today I wanted to play Nintendo Land but had no access to the TV. As a result I have compiled a list of attractions playable without one, using only the gamepad.

Can play:
Octopus Dance: no music, only sound effects, otherwise perfectly playable.
Zelda Battle Quest: Perfectly as archer.
Pikmin Adventure: Perfectly as Olimar.
Metroid Blast: Perfectly in Assault Mission mode.
DKCC: Slightly zoomed in but perfectly playable.
Captain Falcon's Twister Race: Technically playable from a top-down view, at the end of the race it tells you to look at the TV to get through some menus. Just press A until you can use the gamepad again.
Balloon Trip Breeze: Technically playable but very difficult because it zooms in so much and it's difficult to determine what's ahead of you. Wouldn't recommend.

Cannot play:
Yoshi's Fruit Cart: requires you to look at the TV for vital information to draw your lines.
Ninja Castle: Gamepad is used to throw shurikens, TV is use to show you where to throw the shurikens.
Mario Chase (multiplayer only)
Luigi's Ghost Mansion (multiplayer)
Animal Crossing Sweet Day (multiplayer only)

Yeah, apparently me and my sources were confused because the sensor bar is being included in that supplemental package with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Not sure why they'd sell the sensor bar separately if it was included in both packages. Or maybe that's just for Europe?

I think the fact that big budget multiplatform games are on the thing should make it pretty obvious that it's not just a tablet.

All we can hope is that developers don't shoehorn in touch controls where buttons make more sense like on the DS.

Slashgear writer says that Wii U games look the same as PS3 and XBox 360 games, so it is a big problem that they cost the same amount as them.

quote:

Chief among those concerns is how much the Wii U’s games will cost. Nintendo has said that its console will have about 50 games available to customers between launch day and the end of March, and it has even said that a new Super Mario game will be available, but those titles will cost $60.

That’s a problem. Nintendo customers have been conditioned to pay less for games for the last two generations. Now they’re paying the same as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 customers for graphics that really don’t seem all that much better than what we’ve seen to this point? That’s a problem if I’ve ever seen one.

You access this feature from within the game, not the OS, which indicates the extent you can use it varies from game to game.

I'm gonna be really sad if shooters on the WiiU don't support pointer controls. The Wiimote's motion controls might have been... In regards to other franchises on Wii U, here are a few things I'd like to see

3D Super Mario: A new, less plastic art style; new gameplay devices; maybe a new villain

F-Zero: Super fast but not overcomplicated tracks; modify your machine and give it a paint job on the GamePad; online tournaments

Star Fox: Make the characters look like the real puppets from the original box art; augmented reality for all range mode?

Metroid: Creepy atmosphere; gadgets always avaiable on touch screen; aesthic of "photorealistism"

Donkey Kong: 3D adventure; the poignant music of DKC; Dixie; minimal collection

Zelda: Items usable directly from touch screen, others mapped to buttons; sci-fi elements; gigantic bosses

Pokemon: Another Stadium, liked what I played of the first

Kirby: Some psychadelic thing with twisted effects; transformations into vehicles

Yoshi: Maybe a 2D platformer with puzzle elements

What do you think?

I've got a backwards compatibility question (Wii games) that I'm genuinely confused about. I can't find anything about this on Nintendo's site so maybe you guys can help me out.

I'm looking to get a few Wii games for the Wii U, including Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story. I just don't know which controller I'll be able to use. Can I use the Wii U GamePad? Or do I have to get a Wii U remote and subsequently a Classic controller to plug into that to play Wii games such as those?

Since the console goes into a Wii Mode when playing Wii games, it doesn't look like we'll be able to use any Wii U controllers with them. However most Wii games including the two you mentioned don't require the Classic Controller and can be played with the remote and nunchuk instead.

If there's a unified account system, if there are automatic notifications for friends, if you can add strangers as friends or chat with strangers in multiplayer, if there is a unified multiplayer system. We're guessing the anseres to all of these are "yes"? But we don't really know.

You'll be able to access the Nintendo Network on multiple devices such as 3DS, PC and online mobile device, which implies a unified account. They've said you can purchase something on your phone and remotely tell your Wii U to download it.

The 3DS automatically notifies you of friends so it's probable that the Wii U will too.

Reggie said they're going to have a flexible online system that will give developers control, so a unified multiplayer system seems doubtful. (http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidewalt/2011/07/05/nintendo-reggie-fils-aime-wii-u/4/)

The MiiVerse trailer showed a guy soliciting help through video chat from a stranger he met on the MiiVerse forum, which suggests they're letting us talk to strangers this time.

The problem is that they're marketing this as your one-stop tool for your living room. It has TV support, an internet browser, video chat, online message boards for every game, and a controller that allows you to keep playing when someone else wants to use the TV. To take 1 GB of OS space and not offer universal, cross-game chat (even just among friends) is hard to understand for me.

That didn't link to anything. It did give me this post about Call of Duty though.

quote:

I imagine those that purchase this game aren't very bright in any regard. I mean this entire game has been built for your average idiot in mind. It doesn't require much thought, skill, or anything save for situational awareness to be successful. "Bad" players will often times kill a superior player due to the way these games are designed, and its rather pathetic how well these games do when compared to games that require a worthwhile human being behind the controller.

I wager none of you could actually succeed in Starcraft, Street Fighter, Halo, or any other game that rewards you solely on your own mettle. I take it you all tried these games at some point and had your egos bruised due to the learning curve required. I also take it most of you simple folk enjoy each of Micheal Bays Transformers outings, and also have copies of Drake, Lil Wayne, and Justin Bieber CD's nearby.

Its a shame how decadent and inane the average American has become, and its no surprise many other countries surpass us in almost every regard. You all like things being handed to you, and Call of Duty has shown that. You all enjoy the hundreds of unlocks and killstreaks that the game generally tosses your way, and I'm sure many of you would love if the government also threw handouts your way. Gone are the days of actually working hard to earn something.

All of my friends who have this game are the most painfully average people you can imagine, and they all gloat about their accomplishments in each title. Its rather pathetic. And whenever I bring over a game like Tekken or Halo, they all just give up when I man-handle them. Why learn mechanics? Why control weapon spawns? CALL OF DUTY BRAH! 420 EVERYDAY!

I imagine at this point most of you plebeians would have regurgitated some clever variation of "Too long didn't read", and if so, congratulation. I applaud you for making up our new society. One made up of borderline neanderthals.
