Watch out for a new thread, Extra Stout will probably make it. This is info from 2006-Aug 2015 for LOTRO. The new thread will be post-Aug 2015 to chronicle Gondor/Mordor and the eventual end of the game.

The Lord of the Rings Online

Official Site: http://www.lotro.com/

The Lord of The Rings Online (LOTRO) is a formerly paid and now (mostly) Free to Play MMO set in the world of Middle Earth, developed by Turbine Inc (Dungeons and Dragons Online, Asheron's Call). LOTRO is a full featured MMO, not the barebones experence you'd expect from other F2P MMO's.

:siren:Goons are playing on the Silverlode server as The Nazgun.:siren:
We will probably be going to Landroval or Gladden when the server mergers complete. Stay Tuned.

:siren: Kin Rules copied from nazgun forums: :siren:

Ok so we're all goons here, but the reality of the world is that at times people don't know where the line between acceptable and unacceptable occurs. To that end:

1. Mod sass - lighthearted is acceptable, mean spirited and intentional is not acceptable.
2. Bullying/Annoyance Factor - those who are consistently too goony are going to be warned they are stepping over the line. Those who don't realize they are being an asshat will be booted.
3. General Fuckery - don't screw over other goons or generally make the Nazgun name infamous - a lot of us actually play with other people outside the kin from time to time and would like to continue doing so.
4. Officers are chosen because they have shown themselves reliable and generally trustworthy, part of their responsibility is to take care of concerns and to help police issues that need to be addressed. Spergin in front of an officer will most likely get you booted, please be aware.
5. A word on forum usage - GBS can be anything general like new movies coming out, who's dating a hot pornstar, that new recipe you like, what's going on in game recently, etc. However, there is one type of thread which will get shut down right away and invoke harsh punishments and that is people trying to organize goon groups for other games besides LOTRO. This forum is strictly for goons playing LOTRO. You have been warned. Nazgun forums aren't really used anymore, but the same would apply to the steam group.

That being said...being moderately goony is quite hilarious and why many of us stay in Nazgun instead of going elsewhere. The in-game chat and entertainment really make this game what it is and hopefully will continue to do so. Just remember that we are all a bunch of human beings that are playing a game for fun.

Hoboknife posted:

Around holidays, there is usually a lull as people travel or have family obligations to take care of instead of being internet shut ins.

tl;dr: :siren: YES, nazgun is active on Silverlode :siren:

We have a steam group to message people when out of the game, search for 'TheNazgun' on steam - this is a great way to reach people out of game when we need extras on to run instances.

If you need help or have other questions: in game do a "/who nazgun" and change the max level to 100 on the search dialog that appears. Then send a message to any of those players.

Huzzah, new thread... shiny!

By the way, for those that don't know, Oxphocker = Hoboknife = Silverlode Nazgun Kinship Leader.

Edit- adding my leveling scheme (what area for which level range):

code:
1-6 Newbie area (Archet or Thorin's Gate)
7-12 Low level areas (Shire, Low-level Bree-land, Ered Luin)
13-19 Bree-Land Barrow Downs
20-30 Lone Lands
30-40 Evendim
40-42 West Angmar (or extend evendim to ~42 with skirmishes)
43-47 Forochel
48-52+ Eregion
52-56+ Moria (You can stay in Moria all the way to ~62 if you want)
56-62 Dimrill Dale / Lothlorien
62-64 Mirkwood
64-75 Enedwaith & Dunland (These days I would probably just skip Enedwaith)
75-85 Rohan

Posted in the old thread before I saw that there was a new one! Sorry.

I guess I didn't word my question properly. When I said skill dependent I literally ment how many different skills would be needed to properly play a class. Going back to gw2 as an example, every class class had 5 attacks and 5 other abilities. The classes all had different levels of difficulty in terms of play style but the most buttons you need to press was 10.

In the screenshots the skill bar looks like 30+ key binds. I was just asking which classes had the least needed skills to use, not the difficulty of the individual classes. That was listed in the OP but not what I was asking. Sorry for the confusion.

If you're talking about the skill-bars in my screenshots from my Lore-Master, several of the "skills" you see there are actually items (healing potions, fishing pole) I have bound to the skill-bar for easy access. However, you still aren't far off with your estimate of ~30 class skills represented there if you subtract all the pet-summons, buffs, and miscellaneous convenience binds. Keep in mind this is for a max-level Lore-Master, which is definitely one of those most overloaded with skill buttons.

Skill bars can be pretty misleading for the complexity of how the class is played, however. Consider that Wardens only have about 10 skills probably bound to the skill bar, but using 3 primary attacks they generate combinations leading to upwards of 40+ gambit skills! On the other hand, Hunters have a ton of travel skills that have individual skill icons (one for each major city in the game), so their skill bars would potentially look very crowded when in fact they might only use about 10 skills with any kind of regularity.

Come to think of it... why haven't they revamped the Hunter travel-skill mechanism? It would make much more sense to click a single button that brings up a menu to choose your destination (similar to the new stable-master windows), and this would reduce a LOT of clutter on my Hunter's skill bars.

Hit "k", collapse the non-travel skill lists (the first time you use it per login), right-click on your destination. Remove all the hunter-port skills from your bar.

It's okay, I just have them on the little "defensive" alternate skill bar that you can just click to scroll up and down beside your main skill bar. It's just strange to me that they have a separate skill icon for each travel location instead of a single skill that brings up multiple destinations when you use it.

I gotta disagree completely with Flowinprose here. For any given class, this game has by far the most skills out of any game I've seen. Too many, actually. If your metric is "roughly 10 skills or I'm not playing" then go ahead and pass on LotRO.

Alternately, you could break that rule, challenge yourself, and enjoy the poo poo out of one of the best MMOs on the market. This game's real metric is "are you a Tolkien fan?"

Bear in mind that some of the stuff you see in the screenshots are toggles, pots and other consumables. Don't be too intimidated by that to roll a cute little Hobbit that slays huge trolls by screaming at their knees

I didn't say there weren't classes with 30+ skills. I said that for pure DPS classes (read: Champion/Hunter and you can add Guardians in overpower) that it usually isn't necessary to use more than 5-6 skills to fulfill your role. That might be a little bit of simplification, but if you're using more than 10 skills in any given fight as a Champ or Hunter then you're making things way more complicated than necessary.

Are there a lot of possible skills you could use? Yes.
Do you have to use all of them all the time? No.

I would say the difficulty of a class is proportional to how many abilities it has to juggle. LM and Burg have the most, and although Warden may only have a small number there's a huge amount of combinations of those skills (gambits) that you have to remember. I have to echo champ and hunter as the classes with the least amount of buttons. I've been leveling my champ lately and I can basically mash the keyboard and destroy duo t1 skirms (granted I am pretty overgeared for my level).

Most classes have a fair number of abilities you need to use but you get them gradually so you're able to learn what each one does before you get new abilities. In my experience Burg and Minstrel are unique in that you get a lot of abilities along the way that you don't really have any use for but you get the impression they'll be useful later on. So it's kind of intimidating. It's part of why I stopped playing my Burg. Solo burg consists of mashing like 4 dps abilities until you get a crit (or using aim for an autocrit) and then riding the cycle of Burglar's Advantage -> Double-edged Strike -> Flashing Blades until the mob is dead. But I have 20 other abilities that seem like they might be useful in a group/raid scenario, but I have no opportunity to learn how to use them in solo play. I get the impression that for both minstrel and burg, soloing 1-85 is a completely different experience than grouping/raiding at 85. I assume LM is the same, although I have never played one past the tutorial. On the other hand, soloing minstrel is super fun because once you hit level 10 you do shitloads of damage, really quite a bit more damage than you would expect for a support class, and you have great survivability.

This is arguable but this really is a game of alts. I don't have any characters at 85 so I could be wildly incorrect, but it seems like there isn't a whole lot to do, especially now that only part of the Rohan instance cluster is in the game. So there's basically no pressure to hit endgame, you can just gently caress around on alts and craft and do whatever. So just pick a class that sounds interesting, and if you feel it's too complicated/not complicated enough just roll a new one. I wouldn't perseverate too much on deciding which class to play, as rolling alts is something that will inevitably happen anyway.

I have to say though that my experience so far with champ is super fun, especially with an herbalist in skirms. I've barely quested since 20 because I can just destroy skirms and get way more exp/hour than questing. I've also never played a class that wasn't lovely at skirms so this is a nice change of pace.

Just use one of the travel mods, and collapse it all into a hidden menu/buttons/scroll wheel.

For anyone on the fence about this game: I bought the game in February 2008 and quit after my first month, probably because I have the attention span of a gnat.
I reinstalled on December 5th and have played 92 hours since then. My wife is seriously angry but I don't give a gently caress, this game is awesome now. It didn't cost me a penny, either.

Also the Nazgun guys are pretty cool. I play at weird times (East Asia time zone) and there's always people on.

I'm back to the game after a year break, WoW's daily grind has me ready to slit my wrists and several friends had been raving to me about the new features (which really are all truly amazing). I've completely lost the muscle memory for playing my guardian though, and decided to just start fresh as a captain. Really loving it, it feels much faster and smoother than last time I tried. I've done pretty decently as a tank too, when it's needed. Obviously not as strong there as my guardian but I haven't gotten anyone killed and managed to wrangle a few rough aoe situations.

Does anyone have any tips for stat weights while leveling? So far I've been throwing on the best might>vitality gear I can find, running with my power regen herald and using the crit tactic and cruising along pretty well, but I've had two other players tell me I should be stacking agi and crit to get as many defeat responses as possible in combat. Which sounds insane to me and seems like it would amplify what power problems I currently have, but I am admittedly new to the class and most of the guides I've seen could just be years out of date. Just hit 40 for what it's worth.

Have you completed the "Now For Wrath" deed (use Rallying Cry a billion times) yet? It gives a power restore when you use Rallying Cry, which you can decrease the cooldown on by a lot once you get access to LIs in a few levels.

One of the main reasons I recommend doing Mirkwood is that the epic quest line there unlocks several skirmishes. I agree that Enedwaith is also a good zone for leveling, but doing Mirkwood unlocks more stuff.

My burglar is up to level 75 now. The path from the late 40s on that I took was:
Forochel until 48
Eregion 48-52
Moria 52-60
Mirkwood 60-65
Dunland 65-75
I completely skipped Lothlorien and Enedwaith. Mirkwood is extremely efficient for leveling, so I had no need for those zones. I hit 75 without even touching the Gap of Rohan or Nan Curunir parts of the Isengard expansion, partly because I used three tomes of extraordinary experience that I got free from festival presents.

Hmmm...I hope I am not missing sarcasm here.

Have you never heard of the Lord of the Rings? The story is simpy epic. As a fanboy, I would say that it is the High Fantasy story by which all others are judged. The story in the game is well represented. It is deep, if not terribly complex. You have a Dark Lord of Evil, and a collection of heroes who stand between him and utter destruction of the entire world. The characters are palpably realistic and have rich histories. You can form attachments to characters in this game. The quests are replete with detailed descriptions and lore.

While the main story arc goes on whether you win, lose or draw, and you cannot directly affect the main story since it is already written and well-known by hordes of unforgiving followers (thus, changes to The Lore would be met with rioting in the streets), you do have a personal story. You lend a support role to the main characters throughout the game. It is made to seem that if you don't succeed in your tasks, then its possible that the world could be destroyed.

The game is less grindy than a lot of MMO's. For example, it is largely a fool's errand to try and gain levels by simply killing groups of MOBs over and over. The real advancement comes from completing quests.

The story is going to seem unimpressive if you're coming from the BANG BOOM ACTION storytelling of WoW, but, it's much more deep and immersive than something like GW2. Especially if you're familiar with the source material, as killendino_001 said.

You probably won't notice the grind in LOTRO, simply because, when there's a quest that calls for ten whole bearasses, every single bear will drop a bearass, and every bear you kill will probably count for a separate "kill 10 bears" quest. The only time you'll experience a grind is when you're trying to get a slayer deed (essentially optional mini-achievements).

You help the fellowship and get to talk to some of its members, but you're not necessarily a hanger-on or a copycat. Your story is your own and it's important because you're making sure the world doesn't turn to poo poo while the Fellowship's off doing its thing. Then again, there's nothing stopping you from going to the Prancing Pony, running into Gandalf, and going, "hell YES I will do a quest for you, Gandalf!" Then you're sent to Rivendell and you get to meet Legolas and it's great.

Pretty much what everyone else had said about the story. I think the writers did a great job bringing in players to such a rich world. Granted some people may have wanted the true hero story where as the player you save Middle Earth by yourself. But I believe that working in the footsteps of the Fellowship, doing what you can to keep Sauron and his forces from taking over in the Fellowships absence as well as keeping them occupied so they aren't right on their heels is a much better way to be part of the LOTR world.

There has certainly been bitching about the story here in this thread and other threads, though. I think it usually went, to paraphrase, "You're obviously on the sidekicks team or Team B doing all the chores the real heroes didn't want to be bothered with."

I never really got that impression, myself. Basically, they're doing something extremely important and you and the rest of the player characters are solving some extremely important problems of a totally different nature. You prevent or participate in key events that are only hinted at in the books like mobilizing the Rangers or killing some ancient enemy that would rise up after Big Bad Eyeball was destroyed.

I've only ever gotten to around 40 the various times I played the game since launch, but I've always rationalised it as The Fellowship are off saving the world - we're running around meanwhile making sure there's a world left to save.

I have to say after a long absence I'm ridiculously impressed with this game now. Started a Man Captain and a Dwarf Guardian and everything is just so much...smoother... than it used to be. I even managed to run around with my Loremaster and decipher some of the skills - as well as why I like them (Crowd control. Cword control everywhere.)

And Forochel is just insanely pretty and and and and... :v:

This game is a Good Game.

Yeah, as far as plot's concerned I've been content with the idea that PCs are the heroes and we're cleaning up some real bad stuff that pops up in the wake of what's going on and the fellowship was the absolute best heroes imaginable. PCs aren't average everyday peasants, we're just not the 1% the fellowship is. Besides, I (so far) haven't felt as if I'm on janitorial duty. The stuff I'm doing is important too, it's the real war while the fellowship is a secret mission.
