Taffer posted:

That was my first reaction, but it's actually amazingly configurable, so I tweaked away the things I didn't like, and made a few things easier for my lovely babby xcom skills, and I'm having a blast with it now. I set it up so that it's not really much harder than vanilla, just a lot more interesting.

A few things I changed (I can't remember all of them):

Way shorter aircraft repair (also shorter rearm and refuel time)
Longer arc thrower range
Shorter fatigue (I actually like a little bit... just not 4-8 days for everyone with no injuries, that's really annoying)
Shorter injuries. A big injury will still be a couple weeks at least, but no more month+ downtimes. At that point a soldier might as well not exist anymore.
No item repair. gently caress that.
More salvage from UFO's

I'm also playing with cinematic mode second wave option, which is higher aim soldiers and aircraft. Mostly for the air (gently caress the air game) but also I really hate every shot being 45%. :v:
The only other thing I can remember is the aiming angles second wave option, which improves hit chance the closer you are to a flank. This applies to enemies too so it's not just a "make it easier" button, but just adds more strategy to how you play the game.

In general the choices Long War makes of to simply make the game brutal and tedious as gently caress I am personally not a fan of, but you can tweak out the worst offenses and it leaves you with (for the most part) just a way more interesting version of xcom that gives much more strategic choice. I recommend it to anyone who has beaten the game and wants more. The changes I described only take a few minutes with a little ctrl+f in a single .ini file. There are lots of threads a google search will show you that break all that business out in extreme detail.

Long War is a good alternative if you're rolling vanilla classic without losing anybody and nobody is even getting hurt and its getting boring.
I was totally poo poo at LW until I watched a few streams though. It's hard to understand what to do on the meta game unless you see what happens later.

I always wanted a co-op campaign mode in xcom where you and a buddy (or multiple buddies) split control of the squad when you go out on missions, kind of like in the dawn of war games. Make it happen Mr. Soloman.

I'm not even at that point honestly, early-game classic destroyed me when I played ironman. I really dislike the earlygame though because of how annoyingly limited it is, and that's one of the big things that LW improves, that's why I modded LW to be easy for my lack of skills. I really enjoy the improved strategic options and the way that individual missions are less important than your overall performance.

I did watch a few videos though that gave me some idea of how to play it, since it's quite a different beast than vanilla.

There were Muton mercs in The Bureau.

I like the idea of Alien slave races realizing that the Ethereals have no place for them anymore since gene modded humans are a superior servitor race.

So when the Advent troopers come to round up the old alien troopers for extermination, they book it and find more in common with XCOM than their old allies.

everything they have shown so far takes place in a bright white-lit colourful future megacity that looks identical to the standard apocalypse level, maybe these are super secret terror missions that make up only a small portion of the game and the rest of it is still fighting shot down ufos in forests but I doubt that. there's the fighting humans element as well and theyre basically one of the factions from apoc with all the stupid poo poo removed. overall it looks like a modern streamlined version of it and the fact they dont seem to acknowledge this is a bit worrying, do you guys even know what it is you're making? lol

The thin men are great infiltrators and navigators, and are kind of revered because they're pretty smart despite the horrific genetic experimentation, and not diminutive twerps like most sectoids. Certainly less disastrous than some of the other uplift attempts, like floaters. I think the idea was that they're higher in the Alien hierarchy than their early appearance and frailty in the game would have you believe. Also, could have been the devs giving an in game nod to them being frustrating as hell to deal with.

I'd love an alien first class. It makes some sense:
Support: The new specialist class is mostly the same, utility and some stealth.
Assault: Now the ranger, more close range and mobility focused.
Heavy: Now specifically a grenadier, focused on environmental destruction and group control.
Sniper: Still basically a sniper.

What's missing? Splitting the classes from LW made me realize certain roles were lacking. The one that stands out most to me is the Infantry. It feels like with the heavy becoming more of a demolitionist and the assault becoming more like LW's run and gun assault leaves your basic mid-range backbone support open. Where's our heavy shock troop? Hell, I'd field a Muton in that slot.

Where's our heavy shock troop?

In Long War, is the maximum strength of the alien's air game exposed in the INI yet? I want to cap it out so I can theoretically play an endless campaign, which is possible now that the alien ships don't eventually become literally invincible, but I want the cap to be something my firestorms can actually take out. As it is the cap is still well in the "basically impossible" range and I want to know if I can scootch that down a bit.

I'm imagining something like Alpha Protocol where you choose who the Operations Officer is (or it's always Bradford, but he himself has a branching tree of selectable skills) that you can invoke effects on the battlefield with.

A fishperson in an intimidating hat!

I can't understand how I have read pages and pages worth of hype and boobie-venom drinking and there have only been two or three posts dedicated to thirsting for the lives of the collaborators.

XCOM fought tooth and nail, sacrificed dozens of Rookies and almost eight experienced soldiers. Five continents are strewn with the debris of our interceptors and their pilots. The same six bland commercial areas were leveled by grenades and rockets thousands of times. Even in our darkest hour, our guns blazed and our hydraulic fists pounded until the bodies controlling them went cold, but now in its despair Humanity has begun devouring itself, men and women groveling for scraps of Meld and catching at the hems of Ethereals' robes.

XCOM was beaten, but we were not defeated. We slipped through the cracks, faded into the background, and kept our vigil.

We have been scraping together the foolish, the hopeless, the desperate and the disowned, have been scavenging through the garbage of the Advent post-scarcity. We are watching, and we have taken note. Collaborators will pay, and the City Centers will burn.

XCOM2: There Will Be Blood.
