The voters have spoken and it seems as though rather than explore any of the paths branching off from our previous Luna-centric experience, we're going all the way back to the beginning to hang out with Tenmyouji. Off we go!

Previously on this path... very little. We're back to knowing nothing beyond the basics; the characters were introduced to eachother, the basic rules of the Nonary Game were laid out, and we were dramatically thust into our first choice of Chromatic Door, wherein Sigma and Phi, as the Red Pair, must choose between Luna, Tenmyouji and Alice as partners. I've already been through 2 rooms where I solved the extra puzzle fairly quickly and then spent another 20+ minutes on the regular puzzle :shepicide:

Also if you haven't been listen to the music and voice acting, it adds so so much to the game.

Now that I've had time to think about it, Phi's design is not very conventional at all. It's got a lot of things that you might find on a girl's design but combined with a few other things that make her neither particularly girly nor boyish. Really short hair and a flower in it. A skirt, but with a sleeveless longcoat and boots. Very odd.

I think that's the other thing about it, it all looks natural on her somehow. The designer was very skilled to throw in all these random elements and make it flow well.

Clover and Alice, though, I think they must be traveling belly dancers or something. That's the only explanation that makes sense to me.

Pertinent news for EU/AUS folks: Virtue's Last Reward is currently on sale on PSN (Was €34.99/£29.99/AU$47.95, now €19.99/£14.99/AU$24.95), so that's something nice if you missed it on PS+ earlier.

Of course, this is the version with the English Dub forcibly removed (or, as Sony puts it, "with original Japanese audio!"), so there's that.

Update still being worked on. Infirmary is one of those deceptively long rooms.

From what we've seen so far the Infirmary is probably going to be more important as a plot device than as a puzzle room anyway. 'Cause, you know, medical supplies and the dead woman's autopsy and Clover and Ten being handcuffed to the sink and all that.

I can't even remember what happens in there. I think it was one of those rooms where I always happened to be holding what I needed before finding the place to use it, so the puzzles fade from memory more than "I need to go get ANOTHER bottle of alcohol?"

I believe I said this before, but this is a pretty typical optional-VLR-puzzle in that its difficulty is more a matter of it being silly and obtuse than it being a clever puzzle with a clever solution. Let's let the hints play out and follow along with the game's logic.





What number was the blue capsule?


It was 1.


What about the red liquid one?


2...


And the yellow powder?


That was number 3.
When we entered them with 4 and 5, we solved the puzzle.


Mm-hm
So how about applying those numbers and their positions to the block in the frame?


Uh...


Well, think of it this way.
Just imagine the sheet on top of the frame.
What would be in the 1 spot?


Uh...


A blue capsule.


What about the 2 spot?


Another blue capsule.


And 3?


That would be a yellow powder.


What would numbers 4 and 5 be, then?


There's a red liquid on 4, and a yellow powder on 5.


So what are all the icons you got?

We've got a silly puzzle with a weird arbitrary logic progression, which, if you don't immediately figure it out, is dumped on you all in one go in a massive overlong dialogue sequence that takes you all the way to the solution... which is wrong.

This is the fourth typo I've found in this room. I've been correcting them as we go, but I thought this one was dumb enough to warrant preserving in its entirity.

Maybe all the writing in this room was done really late in development, or maybe they're just not paying their editors enough.

VLR is very... weird... when it comes to spoiling 999. Some of 999's plot twists are going to be just handed to us verbatim later, and yet others, like Mr H's mysterious identity, are withheld.

I get the impression that the writers were aware on some level that this game was going to be more popular than 999 and would be releasing in certain territories (ie, Europe) where 999 never came out, so they tried to preserve some mysteries where they could.

:haw: Of all the pre-horrible puzzle banter, I liked this one the best. This puzzle was the first time I had to resort to GameFAQs to get the blue solution, too - it really is just obtuse.

I never got the optional solution to this one. I actually ended up just brute forcing the drat thing and worked out other five letter words once I knew what every letter was. :saddowns:
