You arrive in a small bay. Along the length of the bay there are large hatches which you recognize as leading to drop pod launch chutes, though there are no actual drop pods. Except for a bulky machine, six people in power armour, and a human wearing an intricate robe, the bay appears to be empty.

When you approach, the man turns to look at you, and you see that his face lacks the usual features. Small symbols of Tzeentch have been tattooed where eyes would normally be. The man executes something between a deep nod and a small bow, and you hear a calm and pleasant voice in your head. "I am Victris, the head astropath of this vessel. I have been given the task of relaying to you Lord Aphesius' instructions for the coming mission."

The man walks a few steps closer to the wall, activates a monitor, and motions you to come closer. "The planet is an agricultural world, practically one large farm. A month ago, one of the local imperial nobles discovered an object of great value in ruins under his estate. Unaware of it's nature or value, he sent it to a mechanicus facility for study. Your task is to retrieve this object."

The display switches from a picture of your target to a map. "The planet is under attack by orks. More importantly, the ork threat has been responded to by an astartes chapter. The presence of Marines Errant strike cruisers in orbit necessitates a degree of subtlety and urgency on our part. Because of this, you will be deployed in a disintegrating drop-pod." He points at the green circle on the map. "Your drop site will be in a reservoir. This should make the impact less noticeable. You will then walk to the shore and make your way to the adeptus mechanicus facility, marked with a red circle on the map. After you have the object, return to the reservoir at the point marked in blue for extraction. A colleague of mine will be waiting for you there."

Victris hands you a data-slate with the map you saw, a drawn picture depicting the item you are supposed to recover, and a more detailed map of the mechanicus compound. "The picture of the mechanicus base is from before it was overrun by orks, so some of the machinery may have been damaged or destroyed, but since it has been taken over for use by an ork mek, the main building, marked in red, and the main warehouse, marked in green, should still exist, even if much of the contents have been looted. Any questions?"

Welcome to the game thread! Please put your character sheet in your first post and post in the usual format (character name, possibly with link to character sheet, on top in bold, OOC stuff in italics at the end). If you have no questions, please sigh impatiently or something to give you an excuse to post your character sheet.

Victris' voice returns to your head after a short while. "The object is a xenos data storage device. Unless it has been tampered with it will not explode or scream."

He turns to look at Demeter, as much someone with no face can. "The astartes chapter is Marines Errant, and the orks appear to belong to clan called Bad Moons."

The man is silent for a moment, and Demeter can sense that he's making an effort to communicate with someone without alerting every loyalist astropath and librarian in the system. "Astartes actions against the orks have so far been focused on planetary defence force outposts and population centres. Your target area appears to be low priority to them, but it is possible they might try to reclaim the mechanicus facility, or move to reinforce the defences of the noble estate next to the reservoir. This will not be a protracted campaign. We will leave the system as soon as you return."

"As long as you get the object back intact and in a timely fashion, how you choose to go about your task planet-side is up to you. Apply as much zeal and vigour as you find necessary." Though you all hear it, the focus on Ahemait is obvious, and the tone is not quite as pleasant as before.

The focus shifts to Samara and Phovos and the tone returns to the original. "Anything else?"

Again there is a short silence, and Demeter can sense the same signs of clandestine communication. "The species is known as Yu'vath. Their empire controlled much of this sector before it was conquered by the Imperium, and their technology included some novel ways of manipulating dark energy and the warp. The facility next to the reservoir is the mansion of one of the noble houses on the planet. So far House Haddon's private militia has been successful in keeping the estate from being looted by orks. A small chaos cult has taken root among the servants. One of the bartenders is responsible for getting you off the planet, so if you happen to take a detour through the place, do try to leave him alive long enough for him to fulfil his purpose."

Even with his brain thoroughly wracked, Demeter fails to recall any information about the Marines Errant beyond that they are an Ultramarines successor chapter and what was already mentioned. It appears this particular chapter had never happened to catch his attention.

After a moment of silence, Victris points at the nearest vacant drop-pod launch chute and continues. "If there is nothing else, would you all please stand on the hatch there." As you move to the hatch, a servitor approaches you, carrying a thick hose attached to a bulky machine. Victris motions you to stand closer together, and the servitor moves around you, spraying thick grey foam between you and around your legs. "I recommend you put your helmets on and ask any remaining questions." The growing ball of foam rapidly hardens around you and soon reaches up to your torso. The reason for the advice regarding helmets soon becomes clear as the servitor keeps covering you in the grey goo. Triggered by the movement of helmets being donned, a mechanical voice requests that you remain still.

Demeter's forbidden lore roll was 83, so you really don't know much about these guys other than that they're homeless ultramarine spin-offs. If you want to, you still have time to ask questions. With or without questions, you drop in morning in all your spray-on-heatshield glory.

The servitor finishes covering you in the foam, and after a while it has hardened around you. You hear the muffled sound of grinding metal as you are dropped into the launch tube, and not long after you are fired at the planet. When you enter the atmosphere of Seculundum, you start to decelerate and can feel the temperature rising even through your power armour and foam shell. When you hit the surface of the water, the impact vaporises tons of water. While the evidence of your arrival dissipates into the fog, you sink to the bottom of the reservoir, your now charred heat shield quickly dissolving. When you reach the bottom, you effortlessly shake yourself free of the disappearing remnants.

Having successfully reached the planet, you start walking in the obvious direction: uphill. After a few minutes of walking, Demeter can sense telepathic communication near them. It feels like the opposite of the astropath's efforts on the ship: crude and careless, like the howls of pack animals. Alerted by this, he keeps his eyes peeled for potential threats. This pays off when the source of the psychic noise becomes clear. Even in the dark, your helmets sensors allow you to make out the outlines of five large aquatic creatures approaching you.

Always-on psyniscience and some single digit perception rolls mean you avoid being embarrassingly surprised by local wildlife. You can see five of them, 30 to 40 meters away. I'm going to be doing initiative in a slightly modified way to compensate for the general slowness of PbP combat. Rolls will determine whether you get to act before or after the enemies, but among yourselves actions will happen in the order they're posted.

Phovos launches himself at one of the marine predators, his jump pack propelling him through the water with ease. His target tries to dodge, but is unable to get out of the way of the fast-moving bulk of the charging marine, and it finds itself in Phovos' grip. Phovos clenches the power fist around his target's head, killing his opponent and crushing and boiling much of the remains.

Phovos kills one of the enemies. He also gets 1 infamy point for overkill (dealing enough damage in one blow to kill the enemy twice).

Brego and Samira open fire at two of the approaching creatures, and both bursts reach their targets. Samira's shot hits her target in the body, and the exploding shell opens a large open wound in the creature's underside, though it doesn't appear to be slowed down by the wound. Brego's burst is off-centre, and only one shell connects with the target, exploding inside one of the fins on it's side.

Predator 1 takes 13 damage. Brego gets zealous hatred, and blows a fin off predator 2. It takes 14 damage and can't move more than a half move per turn.

Walking forward along the bottom, Demeter digs into the warp, and easily finds a chain of potential events that fits his purpose. He wills it into reality, subtly altering the immediate future.

Demeter succeeds in manifesting Precognition, with a large margin.

Moving at greater speed than their considerable bulk suggests should be possible, three of the animals charge. One of them lashes at Demeter with a spiked appendage. Aided by his sorcery, Demeter predicts the assault and lifts his sword, catching the appendage in an effortless parry. Another goes for Samira, and the creature momentarily wraps one of it's limbs around her leg, but only a few of the spikes find their way through her thick armour, and the creature detaches itself. Brego is not as lucky, and the beast slams into his chest at full speed, sinking it's spikes through his armour. Embedded in Brego, smaller barbs shoot out of the spikes, tearing his flesh when the creature pulls back.

Samira takes 2 damage after armour and toughness, Brego takes 7. Demeter successfully parries.

As Ahemait moves towards the injured sea-monster, Huracán's bolt of psychic energy strikes the beast that attacked Brego. Warp energies churn it's insides, and you can tell the creature is confused by the psychic nature of the attack. A fine red mist is spreading around its head, but it's still moving.

Predator 4 takes 11 damage and is blinded for 1 turn.

While the maimed beast swims slowly towards Ahemait, a group of smaller fish detach themselves from its body and rush past him. They crowd around Huracán. Though they cannot harm him through his armour, they latch on to every joint and sensor on it, mildly inconveniencing anything he tries to do. A similar swarm emerges from the cloud of boiled pulp that was Phovos' victim, swarming around him.

The swarms can't damage you, but they will stick themselves into every opening in your armour, causing your movements to be extra crunchy as the fish are either shooed away or crushed between ceramite plates. Mechanically this manifests as a -10 to all test while you're being harassed by them. They can either be killed or intimidated away.

Hurácan momentarily surrounds himself in unquenchable flames, boiling the water around him and killing the small fish that were obstructing his movements. The lumbering giant stomps out of the cloud of soup it had created and rushes to Brego's aid. Hurácan wedges his considerable bulk between Brego and the creature attacking him, allowing Brego to get a good shot at it. The beast manages to twist out of the way of the first two shells, but the third one explodes inside it, tearing it to pieces.

Hurácan boils the swarm around him. An aquatic organism gets one DoS too few on a dodge roll and gets killed.

Samira swings at the creature in front of her, but unused to fighting underwater, her blows are slow and the target barely needs to move to avoid them. The hulking crustacean retaliates by striking at Samira, but she steps back and the creature's spikes dig into the sand she was standing on. Agitated, the creature back-pedals with surprising agility, backing away from Samira. She swings at the retreating limb, but the creature manages to yank it out of her reach just in time.

Roll of 99 to hit, followed immediately by a 4 to dodge.

Phovos waves his hand, causing a steady stream of bubbles as the power field boils the water around it. The fist is too clumsy and the fish too agile for him to actually hit them, but the bubbles and high temperature are enough to drive them away from him.

The swarm has left Phovos.

Demeter digs into the warp, greedily looking for a reality in which the thing before him is impaled on his blade. Before he realises that he has dug too deep, a group of daemons take notice of him and use his attempts to force reality to bend to their will for a moment. While Demeter drives his sword through his target, daemonic whispers ring in the water, praising the Prince of Progress and promising more preferable physical permutations. You can see the swarm off small fish swimming away from Phovos mutate before your eyes, growing spike-tipped tentacles before disappearing into the distance. Hurácan, Brego and Phovos can feel a seed of change within them, waiting to surface.

Demeter kills the fish, but the warp proves perilous while he's doing so. Samira gains 2 corruption points, Phovos gains 3, and Brego and Hurácan gain 4. They all also gain an equal amount of willpower damage. Demeter gains 2 corruption points, 7 willpower damage, and 1 infamy point as Tzeentch looks favourably on him for triggering mutation in his allies. The willpower damage is all temporary. Possible gifts of the gods will manifest after you make it out of the water.

Paying no attention to the whispers from beyond, Ahemait prances over to an example of the local fauna and inserts his sword into it. Though the creature cannot appreciate the beauty of Ahemaits graceful movement, it is angered by the damage to its body, and lashes out at the sorcerer. Powered by huge muscles within the creature's shell, razor sharp keratin spikes push to Ahemait's armour and sink deep into his chest. When the beats retracts its limb, a cloud of blood starts spreading around the sorcerer.

Ahemait is the only one in the group to pass the willpower test to resist the daemonic whispers. He deals 7 damage to Predator #2, and suffers 8 after armour and toughness.

Hurácan fires a bolt of energy at the creature in front of Ahemait, and can tell he damaged it even though the damage is minimal. Ahemait, not distracted by Demeter's warp leakage, has more success, and completely fries its nervous system. Demeter walks over to the remaining beast and swings his sword at it, but the blow passes between its fins without hurting it. Phovos activates his jump pack again and charges, but the creature senses the attack and shifts out of the way just in time, and Phovos' attack lands where his target had been a second ago, while it's torn apart by bolter fire from Brego and Samira.

Having disposed of the intervening wildlife, you continue your walk upwards. Ten minutes of steep rocky ground later, you reach the surface. Your vision over the artificial lake is restricted by slowly receding fog, but you can get your bearings from a neat 90 degree turn in the shoreline a couple hundred metres to the south. The mechanicus facility is approximately 4 kilometres south-east of you. To the west, the noble estate is two kilometres away, on the other side of the reservoir. The map also shows a small group of buildings further to the west, 9 kilometres away.

While you discuss your plan, Brego, Phovos and Hurácan feel the effects of the warp on their bodies. Brego's eyes stretch in his head, taking a shape reminiscent of those of a Fury. The change in his depth perception is noticeable, and he can tell that his aim has improved as a result. Phovos feels his skin tingling as small shallow cuts appear and rapidly heal all over him. The scars move around him, arranging themselves to phrases and shapes that are anathema to the Imperial Creed. When he concentrates on the shifting scars, the warp shines through them, as visible in the minds of those around him as any more mundane object. In Hurácan's case, the effect doesn't appear to be coming from within him, but rather like his armour was changing and moulding his body to fit its new shape. His blood temperature drops, his hearts change shape, and his skin turns scale-like.

In the horizon, the sun is starting to rise, and the fog is starting to clear. When you look over the reservoir, you can make out the outline of a large building.

MDoes Phovos blast off on a scouting trip, or do you head to the target?

Phovos moves up ahead, and is soon out of sight of the rest of the group. A couple of minutes later, he can see a group of orks below him. Since they seem to not have noticed him he keeps his distance, but he can make out four larger orks in the horde of a few dozen. They're on foot, but Phovos thinks they're moving faster than normal. They're heading from the direction of the mechanicus facility towards the estate. He realises the ork horde will pass within visual range of the team if both parties stay on their current heading and heads back. His return journey is slightly faster, and Phovos meets the rest of the group a few hundred metres away from where he left them.

Ahemait, Huracán and Samira rush towards the direction Phovos had indicated the greenskins were in, and soon find their target. The orks appear from behind some wreckage and turn towards the three marines. At the front of the horde are four larger orks, all of them holding large, crude melee weapons. To their left is a pile of broken trucks, combine harvesters, and other farming equipment. You can't see past the pile, but you can't hear or otherwise detect any more orks in your vicinity. One of the nobs stands out, as his weapon is not the makeshift collection of spikes and blades the others are carrying, but rather a smooth staff, crackling with green lightning. rear end one mass, the greenskins charge. The smaller ones fire in the general direction of the marines but achieve nothing more than adding to the already considerable noise of their yelling. Demeter can taste the strong presence of the warp in the air. It tastes greener than usual.

Phovos, Brego and Demeter head off at an angle, taking a slight detour around the orks to the ad-mech facility. A couple of minutes after the party split, they can hear the sounds of combat, and can barely see the other three engaging the orks off to their side. Knowing that the ork horde has been successfully circumvented, they head to the mechanicus compound in a more direct line.

Ahemait, Huracán and Samira: combat time, again. I rolled your initiatives, you get to go first. The orks are about 50 metres away from you. You can see a small horde of ork boyz, 4 nobs, and a weirdboy, all doing their best to bring the WAAAGH! to you.

Phovos, Demeter, and Brego:
You arrive at the mechanicus facility. Most of the compound is heavily damaged, and the area is littered with broken vehicles and heavy machinery. Orks are trying to repair the former with parts ripped from the latter. You can see a mekboy trying to attach a power field to a combine harvester, while another is incinerated by the sudden discovery that irrigation systems are not built to handle burning promethium. Smaller greenskins are carrying anything vaguely-mechanical looking to the two larger buildings. Loud noises are emanating from both. A burst of what your armour sensors identify as charred snotlings flies out of what might have once been a chimney.

You are a few minutes ahead of the combat half in time. They will catch up when they finish combat. For the sake of imagery, it is a few (definition of few depending on which half of the team you're on) minutes past sunrise.

Since Winnersh is MIA, I'm going to NPC Huracán for now.

Ahemait, Samira, and Huracán:
Samira screams as the noise from her gun caresses the body of one of the charging ork nobs. The nob continues running, but is in visible pain, as it is now bleeding from its eyes and ears. The orks appear to take her choice of weapon as some sort of a challenge, and scream even louder in an apparent attempt to drown out the slaneeshi marine and her weapon. While Ahemait prances foppishly towards the screaming horde of greenskins, Huracán digs into the warp. Purple lightning arcs between the sorcerer and his targets, and some of the screams of "WAAAAAGH!" take a confused and pained tone asparts of their bodies pop out of existence. Two of the orks in the horde melt into a puddle of green goo and teeth, and one of the nobs glances confusedly at his arm being torn apart form the inside. To add to the cacophony, the orks fire at Ahemait, but orks are not known for their exceptional marksmanship, and none of the bullets make it through his armour, through the paint does get unpleasantly scratched in some points.

pre:
Horde: 2/20 down, 45m from Huracán and Samira
Nob1: Heavily injured, bleeding, glowing green, 30m from Huracán and Samira
Nob2: Injured, missing an arm, glowing green, 30m from Huracán and Samira

Nob4: 30m from Huracán and Samira
Weirdboy: Glowing green, 30m from Huracán and Samira
Phovos, Demeter, and Brego:
Demeter can sense the psychic debris left behind by the orks, like the doings of hundreds of psychically active animals. Among the rubble, he can see the more purposeful, if far from exact or controlled, folds and tears caused by the ork weirdboys. Looming over it all is an effect like the wake left by a boat in the water, spreading out in all directions from a single point not far from them, under the northern of the two remaining buildings. Meanwhile in the materium, you see the mekboy working on the combine harvester walk away from, and hear him yell for his underlings. A moment later, the air smells like charred gretchin, as the power fields pass the green engineer's quality control procedures. The mek walks off towards the southern storage building, looking pleased with himself. You hear a scraping sound, and when you turn to look, an ork boy is sharpening the edges of a windmill blade.

Ahemait, Samira, and Huracán:
Ahemait drives his sword down into the ork psyker, and feels around with his mind. Thrilled by the battle and his little dance, he easily shoves aside the mind of the ork and channels his will into its body. He can see the damage he's inflicting, green skin rupturing in places as the flesh churns underneath. The ork pulls itself free and is visibly shocked by the strength of Ahemait's attack. "Dat 'urt you bloody git! I dunno wat kind of humie waaagh powa dat was wot you ya just hit me insideses wit, but I'z gonna krump ya good for dat!" The weirdboy screams, and green lightning streams out of its eyes and into Ahemait. Bolts of psychic energy pass through his armour and thick muscles, the channelled will of the ork horde burning at his soul.

Ahemait very nearly kills the weirdboy, which retaliates with a Zzapp! Ahemait takes 11 damage after armour and toughness.

Samira aims at the large slabs of green flesh charging towards her, laughing like a maniac as she fires a burst of explosives at them. One of them catches the bleeding nob in the chest, and with a confused yelp, it stumbles face first into the dirt. After a few twitches, it stops moving. The two other rounds hit another nob, one exploding against the improvised armour on the nob's chest. The other hits the charging greenskin in the arm, exploding next to the power source of the orks power claw. The ork-made power weapon overloads, and the combined explosion tears away most of the arm. Judging by the howls, the owner appears to be more upset about the loss of the weapon than of the limb.

Yet another armless ork. Maybe I should retcon power gobs onto them instead.

Seeing that his chosen tactic works just fine, Huracán decides there is no need to fix something that is not broken. He tears at the veil between reality and the immaterium, and focuses his will on harming all things green. One of the boys collapses, and one of the nobs clutches its chest. He considers this a success, either ignoring or not caring about the wide patch of grass rapidly turning brown beneath him.

Huracán continues to sling doombolts in Winnersh's absence.

The horde of boys fires at Samira and Huracán, and this time some of the shots hit their intended targets. A couple even find their way through the armour, and some of the boys cheer as they see the power-armoured figures flinch a bit. The nobs charge towards the two marines not yet in hand to hand combat, still continuing the same orky warcry despite their injuries.

Samira takes 1 damage to an arm, Huracán takes 2 to the head.

Phovos, Demeter, and Brego:
With little warning to his allies, and none to his enemies, Phovos blasts into the air. Seconds later, he slams down on the unsuspecting mekboy, reducing its head into little more than shreds of charred meat before it can resist.

Another attack, another hit, another kill.

While Phovos is in the air, the other two draw their weapons. Brego aims his weapon the usual way, and fires a quick burst into the crowd. The metal dragon spits fire at the brutish xenos, and though one round manages to pass between the greenskins, but two others find their targets and two of the meks' subordinate boys fall dead next to each other.

Two down, lots to go.

Demeter takes aim in a less conventional fashion, looking at the battlefield through the warp. He fires his bolter, and the explosions cut a bloody hole in the horde of gretchin running errands underfoot. However, the improved aim was not the only thing he brought into existence from the warp. You can see ethereal forms of tech-priests and mechanics running around. It appears the spirits of those who died in the initial ork invasion of the compound have slipped temporarily into reality. You, as well as most of the orks, are unfazed by this, but one of the boys seems to recognize one of the spirits. "Dat aint fair! You's not allowed to come back once we krump ya!" Screaming, it bolts in the opposite direction, followed by dozens or gretchin.

Another psychic power, another interesting warp phenomenon.

The gunfire and spirits of the dead attracts the attention of the orks. They look around for a moment, confused and clearly surprised, but soon someone points out the three marines and announces it's time for a humie krumping break. One of the mekboys runs towards Demeter and Brego, waving an active lascutter. Another one drops his wrench and fires a snazzgun at Brego. The slowly moving slug strikes him squarely in the helmet, and falls sadly on the ground without even scratching the paint. The ork that fired it seems more disappointed than surprised. A sentinel walker, piloted by an ork whose pilot goggles betray an improbably positive image of the thing's speed and clearly configured for lifting heavy objects rather than combat, stomps into sight from behind the combine harvester the now pulped mek was working on and rushes ponderously as Phovos. The marine is too focused on the ghosts and the other orks to step out of the way in time, and finds himself gripped between the dull but powerful claws. When he pulls himself free, he finds his arm bruised and armour dented.

Phovos takes 2 damage after armour and toughness.

One of the ork boys pulls out a large shoota and fires a poorly aimed spray of bullets, clearly intended for Demeter but passing far over his head. Another fires a new-looking deffgun at Brego. The aim is clearly better than the other ones, and two rays of energy hit Brego's chestplate. The armour and his thick skin absorb most of the energy, but his chest now has two round, hairless singed patches on it.
One climbs out of the combine and swings a huge axe at Phovos as it jumps down. Phovos steps to the side, and the axe digs a deep, sharp-edged hole in the ground. The ork growls in annoyance as he lifts it back up.

Brego takes 3 damage after armour and toughness.

Brego, Demeter, Phovos:

Phovos slams his power fist into the Sentinel's side, causing the vehicle the shake as sparks stream out of a large hole. The ork driving the stolen Sentinel leans forward to yell something indecipherable and the vehicle lurches forward, claws reaching for Phovos, but the vehicle is far too clumsy to get a hold of Phovos again. The ork next to him swings an oversized axe at him, wounding his leg. Excited by his success, the ork swings again, this time aiming higher, but Phovos steps out of the way and the axe ends up clanking harmlessly on the side of the smoking Sentinel.

Phovos takes 4 damage. The Sentinel is in very bad shape.

Demeter and Brego fire at the two mekboys, both of them hitting their targets. A bright flash of light surrounds one of the meks, and one of Brego's autocannon rounds falls impotently to the ground at the orks feet, but the other two soon wipe the grin off the greenskin's face in a spray of blood and teeth. The ork that had been spooked by a ghost regains his composure and turns around, rushing towards you. The two other boys fire their weapons at you. Samira, Ahemait, Huracán:
Samira laugh as she watches two of the charging nobs get shaken apart by the noise of her doomsiren, collapsing into bleeding heaps of muscle before they reach her. The last nob, blood trickling from its eyes and ears, slams into her before she can dodge, and the orky power claw digs deep into her waist.

Samira takesn 10 wounds, after armour and toughness.

Ahemait pushes his sword neatly into the centre of the weirdboys chest and out through his back, severing its spine. When he pulls the sword out, the body sizzles and crackles with green sparks until it crumbles into a green-ish brown heap.

Huracán aims his bolts of warp-fire at the last standing nob, killing it and coveriing himself, Samira, and the three ork corpses in snow that seems to materialise out of nowhere. The horde of smaller orks discards their puny weapons and runs towards you, axes ready.

Phovos, Demeter, Brego:
When Phovos inserts his power fist into the hole in the Sentinel's side, he can feel it pass through the vehicle wall and reach the ork driver. When the ork screams and thrashes around, Phovos feels the weight of the vehicle resting against his arm and pulls himself free. The wrecked sentinel falls over, and explodes, sending flaming shrapnel spinning over the battlefield. A jagged piece of steel embeds itself in Phovos' armour, scratching his leg unpleasantly. Turning to face his other enemy, he looks around for a moment before he notices the ork had been hit by the explosion too, and lacking the protection of legion power armour, been practically decapitated by a spinning power-lifter. Though the explosion itself was not strong enough to harm a power-armoured space marine or a full-grown ork, some of the gretchin are killed by the fire and flying shards of metal.

Again Demeter looks to the warp for guidance again, and again the warp gladly provides. The charging mek ducks under one of the bolter rounds, but the second one overloads his force field and the third one destroys his head. The body takes a few more steps and falls on top of the still active lascutter at Demeters feet. Brego's attack is equally accurate, though the results are somewhat less bloody, as his target collapses unceremoniously on the ground.

The doors of the compounds main building swing open, and a large walker, this one clearly ork-made rather than re-purposed farm equipment, stomps out, flanked by meks and smaller orks. "Wots going on out 'ere?! I told ya gits to save de krumpin' for da humies! Don't go about destroyin' all de loot before we can use it for da waaagh!" One of meks says something, in an entirely un-orkily quiet voice, and the voice booming from the loudeners on the deff dread continues. "Wot, de humies are here? Well why didn't nobody say so?!" He stomps towards you, snapping and spinning its oversized power claws. A force field shimmers around the whole contraption, and right in the middle of its chest are two large nozzles that remind you distressingly of the business end of a multi-melta.

One of the meks and two of the boyz rush at Phovos, while the others open fire at Demeter and Brego. Though most of the assorted bolts of energy and sprays of bullets fly around them, one of the meks points a bizarre contraption at them, and Demeter can feel the effect on the warp when the rift forms in the barrel of the ork gun. Before he can think more about it, the other end of the rift manifests inside his armour, and small creatures with what feel like indecently sharp claws appear. They dig into his flesh, and he twitches around, hearing crunches and feeling the moist pulp they're reduced to when he crushes them between his hips and the steel plates surrounding him.

Demeter takes 8 damage when a group of snotlings suddenly appears inside his armour.

You can see what remains of the gretchin hordes piling on to partially salvaged mechanicus vehicles. One of the groups appears to be having trouble starting their chosen mode of transportation, presumably due to large chunks having been violently ripped off for use elsewhere at the whim of an ork mek, but the other two whirr to life and head towards Brego and Demeter.

Phovos, Brego, Demeter:
Phovos jumps to the ork with the shokk attack gun, knocking the large and clumsy weapon out of its hands as he slams his power fist into the ork's chest. The ork sizzles, screams in surprise, and is swiftly silenced when Brego's autocannon rounds splatter the ork across Phovos' chestplate.

Seeing his intended target die, Demeter veers off to the side and collides with the ork charging at him. The ork swings its heavy and poorly balanced axe at Demeter, and he ducks under it, driving his sword through the greenskin's chest. He channels his will through the blade, wrapping his mind around what passes for a soul among orks, and squeezes until it pops. When he pulls out his blade, the ork collapses at his feet, lifeless and bleeding from every visible orifice.

The two moving hovercars speed over the land towards Brego and Demeter, their gretchin drivers screaming in excited high-pitched voices. One of the speeders' drivers loses control, and the vehicle brushes against a broken truck, causing the fuel tank to catch fire and sending the open-topped speeders spinning through the air, raining flaming gretchin. Your suit sensors register it hitting the ground some 40 metres behind Brego, buring itself vertically in the soft ground.

The drivers of the other one have better luck, their course taking them around all obstacles and straight to Brego. The marine doesn't have time to react as the heavy vehicle slams into his chest at high speed. He finds himself pushed back a few metres and his armor heavily dented, pressing painfully against his chest. Looking down, he can see the deep marks left in the dirt, his armoured feet having dug clean straight lines, like miniature trenches.
Brego takes 8 damage after armour and toughness, and is pushed back

The ork walker turns around, firing its mega-blasta at Phovos, but the hurry, movement, and orky construction lead to a near miss. Phovos feels the heat even through his armour, but it unharmed while the energy beam cremates the remains of his latest victim.

Two ork boyz run at Demeter, waving large axes and screaming. Three other boyz fire at him. Of the assorted bullets, slugs and bursts of energy, most miss. A few more plink harmlessly against his force field and armour. Only one lone bullet out of a couple dozen finds its way through into flesh, penetrating through a join in his armpit and burying deep into his chest.
Demeter takes 5 damage after armour and toughness.

he finds himself flung into the air by an unexpected current in the warp. Demeter, Brego, Phovos:
Demeter runs towards the nearest orks, and the two orks run at Demeter. The trio collides in a flurry bladed weapons, but both orks find their blows deflected by Demeter's refractor field. Overwhelmed by multiple simultaneous blows, the field flickers and dies. Scowling at the damage to his equipment, Demeter neatly decapitates one of the orks. Before he can get at the second one, he feels one of the hovercars speeding towards him and takes a large step back, leaving it to slam full speed into the shocked ork boy. Demeter can hear a crunching sound as the ork is pushed back a few metres, but the boy is still standing and is now yelling at the gretchin drivers.

Demeter infamy points a dodge test and barely passes. Your refractor field overloaded.

Phovos charges at the ork walker, punching a neat hole in a ramshackle slab of steel welded onto it. Sparks spray out of the hole and the walker pilot roars, his voice amplified by the vehicles voxcasters. It swings what looks like an industrial-size buzzsaw with a power field on it at Phovos, and the marine doesn't have time to pull back from his attack to deflect or dodge the blow. The spinning blade catches him just below the shoulder, lopping his left arm neatly off and cauterizing the wound. A mek charges at Phovos, screaming and snapping a large power claw, but misses with its clumsy swing.

Phovos takes 22 damage after armour and toughness. You take 3 levels of fatigue and now only have one arm. You still have your power fist, and the dread took serious damage.

The orks in possession of guns focus on Brego, recognizing a marine with a vehicle as a threat. Their aim is unusually good for orks, and Brego shifts out of the way of one shot only to find himself in the way of many more. His armour and the car absorb some of the assorted projectiles, but some still find their way through and dig into the flesh of his torso. The hail of high velocity metal knocks him down into the car. He can see and hear more bullets slamming into the wall of the car and whizzing past above him.

Brego takes a total of 8 damage after armour and toughness. You are knocked prone and take 1 level of fatigue.

Ahemait, Samira, Huracán:
Samira fires her bolter at the ork boys. Each round strikes a target, though one of the shells appears to have been defective, entering the open mouth of a screaming ork and exiting through the back of its head unexploded, detonating only when it hits the ork behind it. The remaining orks glance at the weirdo playing with the dead warphead and rush past him towards the one firing the large loud weapon.

Ahemait turns around channels his will through the dead xenos psyker and finds that his god seems to approve. Power flows from him through the corpse and into the corpses-to-be, frying half a dozen greenskins. Lightning crackles between the dying orks and the marines, and the marines' armour shuts down, technology refusing to work in an area this saturated with unholy bolts of electricity. Before his armour shuts down, Ahemait feels something tugging at his soul, and less than a moment later he is in the warp. A great daemon of Slaanesh compliments his style and asks him to stay a moment.

Immobilised inside his unpowered armour, Huracán strains to snuff the lives of the last handful of orks with bolts of warpfire. He succeeds, but also attracts unwanted attention. As the last orks fall to the ground, the earth shakes and Samira and Huracán topple over.

A bunch of consecutive single digit rolls kills the orks, but Ahemait is now in the warp and Samira and Huracán are on the ground with their armour shut down. Ahemait and power will both return in a minute (you can post standing up/re-appearing and moving on), but I want to give you the chance to stroke corpses/roleplay being sucked into the warp before you move on. Ahemait also gains 5 corruption points for his trip to the warp and 1 infamy point for using a recently killed psyker as a psy focus. The Gift will manifest itself immediately.

RAW none of you are actually aligned yet, but since space marines get fewer opportunities to roll for rewards and there's no real chance for you to get aligned before 10 corruption, I'll say you can just pick an alignment. I would never pass an excuse to houserule in more mutations. If you do something silly like declare your psykers undying devotion to Khorne, well, you can discuss whether that is appropriate with him.

Those who passed 10 corruption earlier and thus missed the chance to roll for a reward will receive an extra gift (and a chance to get a reward) during the next conveniently timed exposure to the warp.

Suitable things (such as unprotected exposure to the warp) may grant gifts in addition to the usual ones from corruption point thresholds. Actions that impress your god (or multiple gods) may grant bonuses (or penalties, in the case of khornate psykers) to the infamy tests to receive a reward instead of a gift, and may affect the degree of control you have over the gifts you receive.

Dyne, Slaanesh has through her unholy minion Hashutbot decided to grant Ahemait a reward in the form of Face of Slaanesh. Ahemait is now a pretty marine.

Brego, Phovos, Demeter:

Demeter seeks guidance from the warp, but receives none, having to resort to using his own skills. They prove sufficient as he slices through the ork with his force sword, channelling his will into it to help him cleave the ork cleanly in two. The ork dies with its focus still on the smaller greenskins in the hovercar, having completely forgotten about Demeter for a vital moment. The upper half continues ranting for a few more seconds, becoming silent only when it looks down and realises what has happened. When the ork halves fall on the ground with a sad thud, the greenskins fire their various pistols at Demeter, but soon turn and flee when they see they can't do more than scratch the paint on his armour.

Demeter fails his focus power roll, but passes the the tests needed to turn the ork into half-orks.

Phovos slams his remaining fist into the ork vehicle, tearing another large hole in the Deff Dread near where one of its legs are attached to the body. When he pulls his arm back and the walker tries to turn slightly to strike at him, there is a loud sound of metal grinding against metal as the smashed joint tries to turn. The twisted edges of the armour plates mangled by Phovos' assault prove stronger than the engine trying to turn them, and the limb stays still while the rest of the dread tries to move, causing it to topple over on its face.

Having both common sense and experience with war machines, Phovos leaps backwards moments before the still spinning power buzz-saw cuts through the chest of the deff dread and ignites the mega-blastas ammunition. The remaining mek is not as blessed with foresight, and the momentum of his failed attempt to finish Phovos with a large power claw ends up carrying it deeper into the rapidly expanding sphere of fire and sharp fast bits of metal.

Phovos punches the deff dread, it goes into crit and falls over, which pushes it even further and it explodes. I'm ruling that anyone with half a brain can attempt a dodge roll to back away from a pile of explosives falling onto an active power weapon if they notice it before it goes boom, and Phovos passes. The mek does not.

Brego attempts to steer a vehicle while crouching inside it. His skills prove to be more than sufficient to operate the simple joystick controlling the already running hovercar, and though he's somewhat hindered by being unable to see where he's going, he manages to make his way full speed away from the battle without crashing into anything. The orks continue firing at him, and he can tell some of their shots hit, but the few projectiles that make it through the sides of the car are easily stopped by his armour.

Brego passes both his operate test to make the car move, and his operate test for driving blind without crashing into an ork DIY project.

Brego fires at the pair of orks, which turn into a cloud of blood and fungal organs with commendable swiftness. Phovos is not as successful, and lacking an arm throws off his balance. He slams into the ground next to the ork just in time to be splattered in ork blood when Demeter opens fire with his bolter and kills the greenskin.

The compound is silent, and after a short moment Ahemait, Samira and Huracán saunter into view. Brego swoops over to pick them up with the hovercar, and the group reunites outside one of the two more or less intact buildings. You enter the building cautiously with you weapons ready, but find it empty.

Inside, the signs of ork occupation are much more obvious. Shelves of carefully inventoried supplies and maintenance tools have been knocked over and pushed into piles near the walls, and the large open space near a pair of large hangar-style doors is occupied by a trio of near-finished but evidently non-operational killa-kans. One of them already has the hapless grot wired into it and appears to be ready for combat save for a few disconnected wires hanging free, waiting to be plugged into colour-coded connectors.

It's clear that the greenskins looted the place and discarded everything they couldn't figure out how to turn into either a weapon or armour. There are tools and crudely disassembled pieces of equipment lying on the floor, the few cubicles at the back have been torn down and their contents thrown in the corner in a heap of smashed cogitators and torn parchment. Some of the piles of discarded components and farming implements are covered in oil and promethium leaking from punctured barrels. Demeter can sense the psychic wake left by the artefact you're after originating from a pile of scrap metal and what might be vehicle spare parts.

Together at last. You've pacified the compound, and are now in the larger of the two remaining buildings. It's as messy as you might imagine a garage being after it's looted by orks, but Demeter's always-on psyniscience means you know where the target item is. You can comb the place more thoroughly for anything interesting, or just dig the thing out and leave.

Ahemait leaves the combined garage/office building ans searches through the ruins of the mechanicus compound, investigating combing through nooks and crannies for survivors who might be hiding under the rubble. After a couple of minutes of peeking into collapsed houses and burnt sheds, he finds what he believes might have once been a lavatory. The single-person unit has been knocked over and looks trampled into the dirt by a walker stepping on it. His superhuman ears, aided by the sensors in his helmet going beep at the ork head, pick up a faint rustling sound from within. Pulling the aquila-decorated door open from its badly twisted frame requires considerable effort, but proves no match for a chaos space marine.

When the door opens, Ahemait sees the source of the noise. A tech-adept, caught at an unfortunate moment by the ork assault, had gotten himself trapped. The adept shrieks, both at the sudden light and at Ahemaits face, and promptly faints.

Ahemait successfully raids a port-a-potty. You now have one live prisoner, currently unconscious.

As for looking for things, if you want to devote a few minutes to looking through things, you can each attempt one acquisition test against your perception to try to find an item either in the piles of stuff in the main building or in the warehouse. There's nothing Very Rare or rarer, but tests to acquire farming implements, office equipment, vehicle components or dead orks get a +20 bonus.

Ahemaits adventures with the maimed mechanic

Ahemait wraps his armoured hands around the tech-adepts ankles one by one and squeezes. He can hear the bones shatter, but can't dewtect the expected signs of pain.

The adept regains consciousness a minute later, and struggles for a couple of seconds before noticing the condition of his legs and giving up. During Ahemaits speech, the wounded man looks at the giant holding his broken body passively and without emotion. After a moment of silence, he speaks with a clear, mechanical voice. --I can tell you lie, traitor. Your colours and iconography do not match those of the Marines Errant, your words smell like lies, and your face... Your face brings to mind descriptions of daemons and other creatures of the Prince of Excess.--

Before Ahemait can react, the tech-priest has extended a concealed mechadendrite and raised it above his head. In one swift motion, he points the tip of the thin metal tube at his forehead. A jet of plasma shoots out, charring the mans face and lighting his robes on fire. After a a few seconds, the flames die down, assisted by rapid but carefully gentle patting from Ahemaits strong hands, and leave behind a blackened metal skull. The dark steel face twists into a frown. --Mother always warned me excessive armour plating would be more trouble than it's worth. It appears she has posthumously been proven right.-- His mechadendrites slump in disappointment.

Ahemait fails pretty much every possible test and his prisoner not only keeps any useful information to himself, but also realises you're not exactly the good guys and decides to attempt suicide by plasma pistol, which fails due to tech-priest durability.

Trying to loot what the orks wouldn't take

While Demeter sorts futilely though the rubble, Phovos picks up his wayward limbs before heading back to the ork-stricken building, his arm tucked safely under his arm. On the way back to the other,s he nearly steps on a large horn-like object with a small amplifier mechanism inside. On one side is a large carving of the symbol of the mechanicus, on the other a list of instructions in techna-lingua and high gothic detailing the proper maintenance rites and activation prays for it's use.

Demeter makes it through most of the pile before finding what they came for. The engraved surface of the round stone object has been scratched but it appears otherwise undamaged. When he picks it up, for a moment strange images flash past his eyes. He can recognize it as depicting the warp, but it looks different, as if seen recorded by someone who could see some degree of order in the chaos. By the time he has lifted the petrosphere to his chest, the images have passed from his mind.

Demeter fails his acquisition check miserably. Phovos rolls a 10 and finds a really pretty laud-hailer. Demeter gains 1 corruption for exposure to a strong psychically active artefact, and 1 infamy for uncovering a considerable amount of forbidden knowledge, even if he can't make any sense of the raw data.

Demeter prods and pokes the sphere, and after a few minutes figures out how to trigger the same set of images as when he first picked it up. Though he can't make any more sense of the data contained in the device, repeated exposure and more purposeful inspection allow him to determine that though the device clearly works through a psychic connection and contains information regarding the warp or something in it, there are no signs of demonic involvement in its manufacture.

After a bit more poking and probing, he can find the psychic commands to browse the images at will, controlling which ones he sees. He can also tell that the device is hiding information from him, and would not respond at all to someone with no psychic talent.

When Ahemait walks away, the tech-adept slumps on the ground and starts fiddling with his broken legs, prodding them this way and that before gripping them more purposefully, starting to manoeuvre shards of metallic bone into their rightful places.

Brego searches through the various items strewn haphazardly on the floor, and during his search for an auspex runs into a box of marked for delivery to a central medical facility, apparently after maintenance at the compound you're at. Opening the box reveals it to be full of mind-impulse units, all recently reclaimed from corpses and prepared to be re-used. After a couple more minutes of digging through things that would be of no use, he finds a discarded auspex. When he peers through the auspex, it appears to analyse the pile of rubble as if it was a growing field of crops, but fiddling with a knob on the side resets the display to a more conventional mode.

Samira looks around the building, and though he does not find anything that would qualify as a shrine in the traditional sense, she does find a central power generator connected to a large tank outside, which appears to power not only the building but the entire compound and much of the more permanent infrastructure on the surrounding farmland. The generator has clearly been held in high regard by the tech-adepts, as even the exterior parts have been cleaned and polished far beyond functional requirements.

Brego rolls single digits on perception tests and finds both the auspex and a box of slightly used MIUs.

When Samira activates her Doom Siren the generator starts shaking, and it doesn't take long for bolts to come loose. With a loud whistling noise, pipes crack at their seams and start spraying plasma around the room. Samira jumps back, but a squirt of superheated plasma coming from a disconnected tube catches her arm, temporarily melting the ceramite plating.

In moments, much of the building is on fire. Sharps jets of plasma are shooting out of tiny leaks in the generator and the plumbing surrounding it. Some of the bolts attaching the reactor to the pipe that connects it to the tank outside have embedded themselves on the ceiling, and in addition to the leaking plasma, flames can be seen coming out of the holes in the pipe.

Outside, the tech-priest looks up from his crushed ankles, and after a few seconds realises what the flames and stray plasma bursts are. He raises his voice. "Traitor-Marine! Help me out of here and I'll talk! I'll tell you where the scum of the planet are!" He sounds like he would cry if he still had tear ducts.

Samira gains 2 infamy for desecrating a shrine, Enemy (Mechanicus) for unceremoniously blowing up an archeotech plasma reactor, and 4 energy damage to an arm for failing a dodge roll. The building you are in is now on fire. The large fuel tank outside is not yet on fire, but plumbing connected to it is.

The techpriest looks at the burning building for a moment. A plasma blast pierces the ceiling, followed swiftly by a one-armed figure in power armour taking to the skies through the hole in the roof. He turns back to Ahemait.

"North of here, near the water reservoir. The estate of a planetary noble. Lord Mollis Clunibus would sooner kill himself, probably with more success than I had, than fall to Chaos or be taken prisoner, but the same can't be said for many of his staff. The workers on the farms are content to serve the Emperor in their place, but the servants in the Clunibus Manor desire luxuries and comfort in the style of their betters. The medicae here were often crowded with people with clearly self-inflicted or outright fictional injuries and ailments seeking strong analgesics, and that's not the worst of it."

He pauses for a moment and looks past Ahemait's armoured body. The flames have spread, and the building has started to collapse. You hear a loud rumble as a section of the roof caves in, and the tech-priest gestures hurriedly at one of the hovercars. "I recommend we leave quickly. Whatever attempts were made to stall the fire have evidently failed."

"There's another inhabited compound not far to the east. Workers barracks. Frequent problems with organised fighting rings. Gambling. Injuries. Reduced the efficiency of the workforce significantly.

He points at his face, burnt down to the exposed and partially melted plating of his steel cranium. "The amount of pressurised plasma stored at this facility would make being here extremely unpleasant. Trust me on that one, I know how unpleasant a plasma burst can feel.""

"Sometimes the fights would spill to the fields in unscheduled rematches between workers. The following crackdowns caused riots a couple of years ago. As far as I know, the planetary defence force has managed to keep the hab compound safe from orks, but my information is a few days old for obvious reasons."

Noticing that the tech-priest is telling the truth about the state of the building behind him, Ahemait picks up the crippled imperial and lifts him into the car behind Demeter. Samira and Huracán get in the car with Brego, and when Phovos takes off to the sky and heads north-west, the cars speed off after him. A couple dozen seconds later the group is jostled by a shock wave of warm air from a sizeable explosion behind them.

After a short drive back to the reservoir, you spot man lounging in a deck chair at the shore near where you climbed up from the water. The weather has cleared and you can see make out the outbuildings of the mansion on the opposite shore. When he notices you, he stands up and pulls on a pair of trousers just in time to be decently clothed when you pull over near him. Demeter can feel his psychic presence in the warp.

The man raises his arm in a lazy wave. "Hey. Judging by the armour and the accessories, you must be the guys I'm waiting for." He motions to a stack of what look like coolers. "Right, boss said you might not have been briefed on exactly how we're getting you out of here. That will be by portal. I've got some stuff here that should let us set up a decent enough ritual to get you back up to the ship, got some blood and offal and confiscated profane symbols and all that jazz, but if you want to go raid a hab compound for sacrifices or something I can chill here a while. Any preference as to which god we devote this baby to?"

He looks at you curiously, examining your superhumans forms. His eyes linger on your wounds. "Looks like you had a rough trip. I'm no immortal sorcerer of great renown, but I do have some skill at biomancy if you want me to patch you up a little before we start. The ritual shouldn't take too long and I'm not expecting company, but who knows with all the astartes and orks around. Oh, and who's the techie?"

"The healing's a one at a time deal, I gotta touch you to do that. Anyway, a sacrifice is good, and help is better. Can shave a fair chunk of time off if you can help me prep the circle. Or hexagram I suppose would be more appropriate, if we're asking Slaanesh for favours."

As the well-tanned young-looking man turns back to the open the pile of coolers, the tech-priest raises his head from one of the hovercars. "I knew you were a traitor, and so does everyone else. If it wasn't for Lord Clunibus' base lust you would have been made into a servitor long ago." The tech-priest tries to raise his mechadendrite plasma pistol at the human psyker, but soon remembers Ahemait had disarmed it. "I will not be sacrificed to a daemon, definitely not to one of the Princess of Being Overly Emotional, and most certainly not by you!" Lacking anything else to end his existence with, he starts banging his head against the side of the open-topped hovercar. Clang. Clang. Clang.

Performing the ritual will take two hours. This time can be reduced by helping prepare it. Assisting with the ritual requires not special skills or knowledge to help speed it up, but lore skills or focus power tests can be used to make the trip safer or more comfortable, or to further accelerate the process.

If you want to do something beyond reducing the time it takes, mention a skill, the desired effect, and the thematic approach (goat entrails, sacrifices, sexual lubricant, ominous chanting) you wish to use and I'll see what happens.

He can heal anyone who desires healing once with the Unnatural Healing psychic power. If you want to go somewhere else, you can either tell the guy to wait, or you can split the party while some of you prepare the ritual.

Ahemait's Additional Adventure
The techpriest thinks for a while, and then nods. "I am Enginseer Johannes. I believe helping you here will in the long term benefit the planet and its population. I will aid you." He points Ahemait in the right direction, and after a short drive Ahemait can see the worker's barracks. The hab block is surrounded by makeshift fortifications made of sandbags and barbed wire. Small groups of armed humans, some of them in PDF uniforms, some wearing workers overalls stand outside, watching the horizon for signs of orks.

You've found the hab block. You're not quite in yelling distance yet but you can see them and they can see you. How do you want to approach this?

Getting out of here in 3... 2...
Brego scans the surroundings with his auspex, but the only signs of life he can find are various aquatic animals in the reservoir, themselves, and what looks like a mass of goat shoved into a crate much too small. The human psyker springs to action, taking lids off the crates and revealing various supplies suited for the task. The contents make it clear that he had prepared for a ritual dedicated to any of the gods: there are containers of blood, multiple skulls, books and scrolls, rotting offal, incense, the previously mentioned to lubricant, and even a pair of young live goats.

When Brego draws the star on the ground, the man grabs a bottle of blood and pours it in the grooves, staining it dark red. He places skulls at every second point of the star, and when Huracán activates the crystal spire on his staff and rams it into the ground at the centre of the star, he ties the two goats to it. Next to the sorcerer's staff, he places what appears to be a brass fondue fountain and fills it with blood.

"Right, if you want to go with Khorne we can start the ritual, or we can work from this to Chaos Undivided. Up to you."

You have a crude Khornate summoning circle. You can either go with that, or you can add tributes to the other gods.

Ahemait's Additional Adventure All Alone
As Ahemait pulls over, a group of people approach the car, weapons raised. When he steps out, they immediately lower them and stutter apologies. A small crowd gathers to gawk at the space marine, and your augmented senses can hear them whispering. The telling of tales to ones grandchildren is mentioned. After a short moment of awkward excitation, a woman wearing a dishevelled Seculundum Planetary Defence Force uniform barks an order and two people rush inside.

The woman approaches you and bows. "Of course, my lord. We only have a makeshift infirmary converted from a common room, but we have a trained medic who will do his best." The two men who rushed inside return with stretchers and take Johannes inside. The woman continues. "I am Sergeant Panem. Is there any way we can be of assistance?"

Getting out of here in 3.. 2...
"A shuttle wouldn't make it very far, past both the Astartes ships in orbit and ground-based anti air. The boss isn't making us do it this way because he thinks it's swanky." The psyker goes back to crudely grafting various organs, very clearly pas their use-by date, on to the goats. The air is permeated by a pungent odour and distressed baaing. While Samira adds the appropriate dedications to Slaanesh to their expanding ritual platform, Phovos doodles tales of gore and glory on the sand with an armoured finger.

Demeter interrogates his mind for recollection of something appropriate and remembers occult phrases and chants used by cultists of Tzeentch to attract their master's attention. Brego flips through the books, but finds most of the text is unintelligible, having been written in a script alien to him. He reads out loud a passage written in an alphabet he can recognize. Though he cannot understand the meaning, whatever it was clearly worked, as everyone feels a slight electric tingling in the air. Nine seconds later, a passing gull falls on him, dead and somewhat singed.

Demeter aces a scholastic lore: occult test, and remembers a whole lot of stuff. In practice, that means you can go all Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn during the ritual and stuff will happen.

Brego gains a corruption point for reading bad books and causing a something to happen. You now feel like there's a 12V battery in your mouth. Brego has gained one common-craftsmanship seagull corpse.

It only takes the sergeant a second to consider your request before she something that may be interpreted either as a deep nod or a hurried bow. "I have just who you're looking for. In the recent years, the enforcers here have assigned troublemakers to help the PDF with menial maintenance work. With the xenos invasion, we've been organising them into additional squads attached to normal PDF platoons on top of the usual five. We have one such group here."

The sergeant turns around for a moment and yells an order for squad 6 to assemble and report. When she turns back, you can tell she's trying to contain the joy of having been able to not only meet but help a real space marine. "This would leave us with two regrettably understrength squads of proper soldiers, plus a few civilians with applicable talents. That should be enough to hold this position against the greenskins, especially if the Emperor's Angels of Death are operating in the area."

After a minute or so, a mismatched squad of six people, wearing dirty civilian clothes under dirty flak coats and carrying simple projectile guns which most of them clearly are not trained to use, gathers and makes an almost respectable attempt at standing at attention. Though most of them look as awestruck as the sergeant, a bookish-looking old man looks Ahemait up and down before leaning to whisper something to the sergeant. You can't make out exactly what he's saying, but you can hear the words chapter and colours mentioned.

Panem is visibly shocked and terrified. "WHAT?! How can you... You're not... How dare you accuse... Urgh, I'd execute you myself for your insolence if we weren't short on people as it is." She looks at you. "My Lord, I apologise sincerely for his behaviour. Mister Pervideo was sentenced to penal labour due to his tendency to speak out of place of matters he does not and should not be knowledgeable of. He, and the other five, are yours to do with as you wish."

As Ahemait leaves, Panem salutes and assures him Johannes will be informed. On the way, the six people stay quiet, awed and terrified enough to follow Ahemait's orders to do so. Pervideo glares at him as much as he can, but has the self-preservation instinct necessary to keep his mouth shut.

When he makes it back to the reservoir, he arrives at a ready ritual site, with creatures that were once goats and a dead seagull in the middle, attached to a glowing crystal on the end of a stick. Ahemait stops the car nearby, and the human psyker jogs up to meet him. "Ah, he returns! We're ready to begin, unless there's something you wish to add. I assume these are the people you said you would bring, and not under the same special protection as the tech-priest?"

The shirtless psyker looks at Ahemait quizzically. "You want to start fleshmoulding here? Now? I don't mind, but unless you've made some serious breakthroughs that's going to take a while. I suppose we can try to time things so that the space time warp hole thing opens a bit after you finish, if you want."

"It's a technical term. In common language we usually refer to it as Good Ol' Warpholey." He walks up to Brego and places his hand gently on the marine's chest. "As for your wounds, you only had to ask." He mutters a few words and the worst of Brego's wounds start to fix themselves. Demeter can feel the vail between the warp and the real world growing thinner, but before he can do anything about it, the warp flashes into existence in front of them, and for a second the marines, the bartender, and the prisoners are all unprotected in the warp.

The man retracts his hand, reality returns, and Brego's body finishes it's unnatural healing. "Right, that was a bit unexpected. Maybe try with a little less oomph next time. Anyone else want a bit of patching up, or shall we begin? The words are in the book waiting to be read, the inscriptions are already on the ground, and lacking anything else we've got goats to slaughter."

One of the goats is twitching on the ground and frothing at the mouth, still chained to Huracán's staff in the middle of the ritual site. The other goat now has insectile limbs instead of hooves. Still in the car, Mister Pervideo appears to have caught fire, but show no signs of being hurt by it. He seems more annoyed than alarmed.

Brego heals 11 wounds. The psyker rolls Shadow of the Warp on psychic phenomena. One of the prisoners and both of the goats are pushed past a mutation threshold by this, and Phovos gains 5 corruption points. The rest of you pass your willpower tests.

Looking around the ritual site and hearing Ahemait's words, the six in the car finally realise what is ahead of them. Perivideo alone keeps his cool, perhaps having resigned to his fate when he recognized Ahemait's alignment earlier, but the others panic. Three simply stares at Ahemait, mouth agape and eyes wide, frozen in fear. One simply falls down unconscious, without so much as a theatrical sigh. One goes green in the face, and starts uncontrollably expelling his last meal onto the floor of the hovercar. Perivideo buries his face in his hands, and you can hear him mutter something about facing their deaths with some dignity.

When the fleshmoulding is done and Phovos stands up, his wounds immediately being to seal themselves. Parts of his body appear metallic, but even those are reforming themselves into a more functional shape as the towering marine stomps forward. Both Phovos and Ahemait can feel the dark gods smiling at their actions.

While Ahemait works on improving Phovos, the others proceed with the gate ritual, and when Phovos, now taller than a small titan, lumbers to the scene with Ahemait following after him, the ritual is a scarce few minutes from completion. Demeter's expert direction has allowed it to be performed at a greater speed than a mortal sorcerer could have managed, and the gods appear to be favouring them today.

Moments before the ritual is completed, Demeter senses a new, strong psychic presence, the source of which becomes apparent a few seconds later, as the group notices two approaching vehicles in the horizon, moving at high speed towards your location. You can tell the small skimmers are human rather than ork technology, but they are too far for even the augmented senses and advanced sensor technology of a space marine to accurately count or identify the passengers. Brego performs a quick calculation in his head and realises the skimmers will reach you before the ritual is finished, but only barely.

Phovos and Ahemait both gain 2 infamy points, Ahemait also gains 2 corruption points. Phovos heals 12 wounds due to his regeneration.

You can try to hurry the ritual, either by risking unpredictable consequences or by doing something imaginative that might please the gods sufficiently, or you can let someone (this can be the NPC and Huracan) finish the ritual while the rest deal with whoever is coming.

While the others stay back to finish the ritual, Phovos, Ahemait and Brego go to meet the incoming vehicles. Demeter's prediction proves correct, but only one of the loyalist astartes can react before you're upon them, firing a burst of bolter fire from the land speeder's weapon at Phovos' bulky form. Three bolt rounds hit him, but only one managed to make it's way through both his armour and his monstrously thick hide. The wounds quickly seals itself, and Phovos' continues his flight with fewer injuries than he started with.

When the two groups get a proper look at each other, panic happens. The sight of Phovos' unnatural form shakes two of the loyalists despite their extensive conditioning, and the sacred symbols and, frankly, the amount of blood on the armour of one of the loyalists frightens both Brego and Phovos when they realise these people are, except for the unholy support of the warp, more or less their peers. Brego trembles inside his power armour, and Phovos instinctively yanks himself back away, nearly dropping Ahemait. One of the loyalists turns the speeder he is driving around, while his passenger retches inside his helmet.

Phovos takes 2 wounds, and heals 6. Brego is at -10 to all tests until he snaps out of it. Phovos is at -10 to all tests and can't approach the loyalist devastator. The loyalist devastator is currently vomiting uncontrollably in a land speeder going the wrong way. Everyone else passed their fear tests.

It is your turn to act.

Brego fires at the speeder turning away from them, and through his shot connects exactly where it was supposed to, it barely does more than dent the side of the land speeder.

Ahemait tries to nudge the other vehicle with his mind, hoping it would crash, but the loyalist librarian is on the ball and deftly counters his efforts. Though Ahemait can force reality to bend to his will despite the warp being made to resist his actions, the push proves sufficiently weakened that the speeder's driver can easily compensate for the unexpected change in pitch. The speeder does, however, suffer considerable damage as Ahemait's psychic push crushes internal components, and despite the effort of the astartes driver, the course of the vehicle changes noticeably. The speeder nearly hits Ahemait, but much to everyone's surprise he disappears from existence just in time to avoid a head-on collision.

Adjusting his own trajectory in the air, Phovos managed to slam straight on to the nose of the Land Speeder, despite the speeder's unexpected swerving and him being significantly larger than the vehicle. The colossal traitor marines' blow pulverises most of the vehicle. The power field of his oversized power fist and the heat of the crushed engine parts ignite the skimmer's fuel, which in turn ignites the ammo crates attached to the sides of the vehicle's gun. The librarian leaps out of the vehicle, avoiding most of the blast, and his power armour is barely singed. The other marine is not quite as quick, and a high-velocity piece of engine makes it way through his armour and into his torso.

The librarian yells something inspiring into his vox, and though you cannot hear what he says within his armour into a secure vox channel, Ahemait can feel the psychic weight accompanying his speech. What he did clearly worked, as the two panicked marines in the other speeder come to their senses and turn back around, speeding towards you.

While the skulls engraved on his armour start to weep blood, the librarian draws his force sword and spins it around in a tall arc, burying it deep in Phovos' massive leg. The blade pushes Phovos' knee back, forcing it to bend at an unnatural angle, and the librarian channels his righteous will through the wound into Phovos' body, burning him from within.

Having come to his senses, the pilot of the other speeder accelerates towards Brego, while his gunner fires a burst of bolter fire at Phovos. Most of the bolts hit, but none of them make it through the thick armour and semi-mechanical hide. The tactical marine that had been driving the now destroyed speeder climbs to his feet with a power sword in one hand and a plasma pistol in the other, and lunges at Phovos. The powered-up shot from the plasma pistol melts it's way through Phovos' armour, barely, and cooks the skin of his arm, and the marine manages to put enough of his weight behind his thrust that his sword stings into Phovo's leg, embedded hilt deep.

Brego scratches one of the speeders. Ahemait messes with the other, doesn't achieve much, but his RF forces the driver to spend a fate point to avoid being stunned. Phovos then completely, utterly, and irrecoverably destroys the speeder.

Phovos regenerates 6 wounds, healing him back to full, and then gets dog-piled on for 6 (librarian rolling a 10 for damage) +9 (force weapon armour-ignoring damage) + 3 (maximal plasma pistol shot) + 3 (space marine with a power sword) = 21 damage, putting him at -1. He takes one level of fatigue due to the librarian's RF, and can't run for two rounds due to being in critical wounds.

Ahemait rolls perils and disappears into the warp for 2 rounds. This also gives him 5 corruption. Since I'm instituting a new house rule stating that gifts of the gods happen every 10 corruption points, rather than every 30, this also means he gains a new gift or reward. Hashutbot continues to love him, and he gains the Mark of Slaanesh.

Brego fires his autocannon at the remaining land speeder, and though some bit of ill fortune the driver steers right into his burst. The vehicle is torn apart by the autocannon shells, and the fuel and ammunition in the speeder explode. Neither of the loyalists can get out of the exploding vehicle in time, and both are showered in pieces of ceramite and plasteel. The devastator manages to land on his feet and looks mostly uninjured, but the tactical marine that had been driving the speeder ploughs a deep groove six metres long into the dirt.

Phovos tries to slam his massive fist onto the librarian, but he is thrown off balance by the flesh of his leg shifting to heal the wounds he had suffered, and he ends up creating an impressively sized but not immediately useful crater in the ground next to his target.

The librarian mutters a prayer to the emperor, and it is clear whatever he did had some effect, as Phovos, the librarian, and the other loyalist marine engaged with Phovos all rise fifteen metres into the air. Phovos floats gently to the ground, but his foes are not so fortunate, and slam painfully into the dirt. The librarian stumbles and falls, but the tactical marine lands on his feet, and lunges at Phovos again after taking a second to pull his legs out of the dirt. Phovos' considerable bulk is difficult to miss, but his armour and monstrously thick hide is also difficult to penetrate, and the marine's power sword strikes Phovos in an armoured toe for no effect.

Recognizing the threat posed by a chaos space marine with an autocannon, the devastator turns away from Phovos and fires a long spray of bolter shells at Brego. Though Brego manages to dodge out of the way of a part of the burst, two of the shells still slam into him, easily penetrating his armour. Chunks of Brego's flesh are ripped free from his chest by the force of the attack leaving large, weeping wounds, and the force of the attack combined with the sudden drop in blood pressure stun him momentarily. The tactical marine climbs onto his feet behind the devastator, draws a bolter, and turns towards Brego.

Brego very thoroughly destroys the speeder, putting it at -22 SI. Both passengers are damaged by the resulting explosion. It also draws the passenger's attention to Brego, who gets hit by a bunch of Vengeance bolts and is now at -6 wounds, stunned for one round, and suffering from blood loss.

Phovos misses, but the librarian manifests a power and rolls perils, dealing falling damage to both him and the other marine fighting Phovos. Phovos heals his single point of critical damage and 4 additional wounds from spending an infamy point, and then regenerates 6 wounds, bringing him up to 10.
