I made it to level 7 just grinding alone and messing up poo poo for the heavily-dominate blue team.

The most fun part of this game is baiting strangers to drive to the tiny park behind my house to destroy a single portal with a single R1, so I can run out to the deck and blow up whatever they put on as soon as they drive away. Tonight I got 4 visitors in two hours.

On a side note, Amazon has this super size 13000mah external battery pack on sale. It even has a flashlight for your late night trespassing. http://slickdeals.net/f/7457162-ank...monday-deal?v=1

I had no idea what they were. I wrote them down before I realized the iOS client can't use codes.

I ranked pretty well at the AP-contest event just by dropping a single L1s on unclaimed portals then waiting for someone to fire off a L8 burster a few blocks away so I could reclaim all the same portals.

Did hacking opposition farms not used to be a thing? I'm grateful for the blue guys expending all the XM required to keep their farms full so I don't have to.

It does cost me some power cubes to make a second hacking pass through, but I always get enough back to make it worthwhile.

I installed this and...how do you actually play it? It seems like the idea is you just have it on in the background as you go about your daily business and if you happen upon any nodes or whatever you can capture them, but considering it needs a constant internet connection it seems like you have to actually commit to playing it while you're out?

Don't just leave it open if you'd like your phone battery to last past lunch. You can look at your whole town at https://www.ingress.com/intel and get a feel for high-value targets and see what field-making is happening. Part of the fun in the beginning is getting to know your town and seeing what groups of portals are fought over.

We have a dense park with like 25 portals in a few acres. It goes in cycles where one team will build it up and make it nearly impossible for one player to attack without help. Eventually the other team gets fed up and a few players make plans to take it over. Then there's a few weeks where it stays constantly low-level with lots of new players leveling up fast trading it back and forth. I don't know what I'm saying with this anecdote, except its the kind of thing you don't realize until you've paid attention to the game locally for a bit.

Yes. As one person attacking a single portal in the middle of the day, the opposite team is likely to notice their phones light up and you'll be going against up to eight people recharging that portal faster than you can attack it.

I tried using L8 weapons to take down a portal with nothing but L1 resonators the other day and I was still wasting supplies against recharging.

We had a balance in town that was kind of working for a long time: a highly-organized, apparently-unemployed, insomniac Blue versus an outnumbered but scrappy Green.

In the last month or so, blue turned things a little sour --destroying anything green literally within minutes, always accompanying their actions with snotty chat messages.

At this point, I'm the only green remaining. At least 6 other level8+ people quit completely, left hangouts and closed G+ accounts.

I'm done deploying anything at home. I think blue noticed because I have one obvious, easy-target portal that no one has touched it in about two weeks.

They've fallen into a boring routine of fielding the same areas, waiting for them to expire, then reclaiming and laying the same links. I hope maybe they'll get tired and let the town go white.

We have a local player with an obnoxious, offensive name who grinded up to level 7 in like a week, then started flip-carding his own team's anchors and throwing up really stupid long links with no fielding.

I wish I could see the team's hangouts chat.

Nah, this seems pretty intentional.

A layered blue field covering at least 5000 square miles that has been repeatedly rebuilt gets Jarvis'd at the main anchor point.

Then 4 blue blocking links at least 50 miles long each all pop within an hour, none of them sharing a portal, so at least 4 more Jarvis' would be required to rebuild.

All from one account a few weeks old. Hilarious.

On a whim I asked the guy who provided the link why such a significant application process was needed. I mean, it couldn't just be folks taking a go-to-place-push-button game too seriously, right?

Long story short, I was told that I didn't understand the game, that Ingress isn't go-to-place-push-button game, its a community that requires such protections, because what if something you planned for over a month was ruined by a spy from the other team listening in, etc.

:wtc:/:fuckoff:

We really do spend a lot of time and effort planning big fields. Collecting dozens of keys and clearing lanes at the very last second for a field to go up right before a checkpoint.

It's for fun and the teamwork is friendly socialization, but it really does suck when the other team is waiting at your anchor point, or somehow knows exactly where to throw a blocking link.

Meeting players in person happens naturally in the game anyway, so I don't think it's so crazy to require that someone at least vouch for you. You never know when that friendly new player no one has ever met is really a bored L16 for the other team.

The best thing I ever did in my relatively short time playing Ingress was totally gently caress up a local op (for my side). The guy that was planning the op was a total douche bag that is primarily the reason I quit playing. He spent roughly 3 weeks planning a massive op, and the linchpin of his op was a park called Geezer Park that has about 10 to 12 pretty clustered portals. I had friends on the Resistance side and I told him "You should get some people and go to Geezer Park Friday night at 7pm." The comms were hilarious because everyone was too busy accusing each other of being moles that I (a well respected Enlightened member) was not ever suspected. But this is the reason why people are so paranoid about who they let into their groups, I played the long game and it was totally loving worth it.

Boat ramp park into the Missouri River right off a highway has a dirt footpath through the woods along the river over a mile long.

At the end of that path there's a bench and a plaque denoting a Lewis and Clark expedition river crossing. That plaque is a popular fielding portal.

The trail is creepy as hell after dusk, but seemed ok during the day.

I made the long, muddy trek to drop a bigass layered field right at checkpoint after lunch.

I didn't see a soul until I got there and noticed a large black man up on the bench with a cellphone in his face.

Assuming it was someone camped out to make sure the field made CP, I said hello as I walked up behind him. He was friendly. Knew nothing of the game.

I got close enough to portal to attack and realized it was porn on his phone and he had his erect dick in his other hand.

Look of shock on my face, and he whispered, "It's ok. Can I see what that game looks like?"

Most awkward moment of my life as I quickly backstepped, trying to knock that portal as quickly as I possibly could before sprinting to my car.

Or just find another portal. You've already built a high-value target for the other team to attack.

Portal defense is a losing battle. Ignoring the rare case of a guardian, there's very little value in worrying about holding an unlinked portal.

Until level 8, you're playing for AP so be happy when things flip. After 8, hopefully you've met some people and might want to play for team MU score. At that point there's strategy to knowing your opponent's play patterns, knowing what portals have limit-access at different times of day, and paying attention to upcoming MU checkpoints every 5 hours so your fields count.

Link it up to your hearts content. You're still playing for pure AP to hit 8. After level 8 it may feel like a waste spending that much time in a cemetery just to give the other team something to smash, but for now you should make as many 1MU fields as possible.

No one "deserves" a guardian and an onyx badge shouldn't be handed to anyone. Kill it for a unique capture. It's a game and that's part of playing.

Speaking of guardians, I just had a woman go nuts chewing me out on open comms for linking to a portal within scanner-view of where I work all summer.

Car-accessible, a block off a busy street, level 7, deployed on by 5 people, 3 common shields and a heatsink.

Yet she said I was an idiot for linking to it then ranted and raved about how inconsiderate I was for linking to her 90-day portal without asking permission first.

You see, she's on disability, on a limited budget and can't afford to drive to the boonies to claim a guardian.

All that over a 10MU field where the other two corners were inside a 30,000 seat stadium.

If you're going to go to the effort of clearing a path for a very large field, you may as well layer it and get as many MU as possible through the cleared paths.

If you're just making little fields for AP, layering can get you many more fields out of a small number of portals, and a ton of AP fast without having to much gear.
