Ugh I still don't know how I feel about Kiefer. He keeps going between noticeably sounding like Kiefer Sutherland and being acceptable, but every time I watch him speak I never think "Oh hey it's Big Boss".

And then he goes and pulls off a single great sounding line like at the of the Quiet cutscene and I get even more conflicted.

He dubbed over himself for the English version IIRC, despite speaking in English for the shoot. I know they had to dub over Van Cleef's lines as well; in the extended edition Blu-Ray, they actually had to hire an impersonator to do his English lines, since the man was dead. Wallach and Eastwood came back for their own lines in the "new" scenes as well, I think.

EDIT: Wait, no, I think it might have only been A Fistful of Dollars that Eastwood had to dub his lines in for the original English release.

Production order. Metal Gear > Metal Gear 2 > Metal Gear Solid > Metal Gear Solid 2 > Metal Gear Solid 3 > Metal Gear Solid 4 > Peace Walker > Rising > Ground Zeroes > The Phantom Pain

You can also do Portable Ops in-between MGS3 and MGS4 if you have a PSP, or you could watch an LP or whatever. And honestly you can skip the two MSX games as they don't have much in the way of plot, but drat they're good games.

My strategy for those missions involved tranqing or marking, and then headshot with a suppressed weapon. That way you don't have to go crazy finding the last guy among all of the patrolling soldiers you've already marked. Also, always avoid triggering patrol shifts, because that can mess up your mark count.

You can find an extra rifle and SMG with suppressors in a couple places (IIRC, the little guardpost next to the western watchtower, and the armory inside the admin building, respectively) - just make sure your suppressor is worn out before taking one, because the new gun won't have its suppressor any more if you swap first. Weird, I know.

Yeah, patrol shifts were throwing me off earlier. I was like "How the hell did my marked count go down? OH RIGHT...patrol shifts...KOJIMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" etc.

I shall be tackling this again later after I have an afternoon nap!

Nakar posted:

Also don't trigger alerts, as in search phase alerts. Guards have predictable postings or patterns on a map and you can and should be able to do a marking run with near-perfect precision as long as you're going through the right parts of the map at the right times and not being seen or heard or taking out guards or cameras (unless you know they won't be discovered or you mark the guy who's going to check the camera out). Once a search order goes out everybody wanders around and good loving luck tracking them down at that point.

EDIT: Also if you hold up and question a guard within about 50m of other guards he will generally mark them all for you. This can save a lot of time.

I'll keep this all in mind. I sort of tried this before, but when I was found I just said "gently caress it" and killed everyone until reinforcements wouldn't be sent anymore. This lead to me running around an empty base just getting bored.

You guys have any tips on S-Ranking Eliminate the Renegade Threat? I've tried several different video guides at this point, and none seem to be getting me past an A-Rank. I have Reflex turned off, but there always seems to be some random marine that that is someplace he shouldn't be that finds me, or sniper headshots don't immediately kill Glaz or Palitz, or some random guy gains superpowers and spots me from what feels like an unusually far distance etc.

Dammit, I got the MGS2 Platinum, I should be able to do this.

Or just say gently caress it, CQC the guy walking up the hill as you dash over to the jeep guys, CQC flip them and steal their jeep while the alarms blare, drive it over to the bald guy's jeep and CQC him, then jack his jeep after putting him in it and drive it to the bridge and intercept the other guy as he's driving away. Then drive out. One alarm, no kills, double extraction in under 2 minutes, S rank guaranteed.

This sounds interesting, but I'm not exactly sure how it is supposed to play out- where exactly will the "bald guy" be? Where will the other guy be driving from, and how do I get him out of his vehicle easily? Do I get out and tranq him?

I had to modify it slightly though, because for whatever reason Glaz would not spawn if I tried to snipe him after throwing a smoke grenade and killing Palitz (Must be PS3 limitations). Instead I had to throw the smoke grenade, quickly mark Glaz, then kill him, then snipe Palitz while he was still in that general area. I ended up with an S-Rank with a time of 2:45.9992, no Alerts, and the bonus from No Retries and No Relfex, and a total score of 52870. :)

I love Ground Zeroes. I may have been a little salty earlier, but I love the high of satisfaction from doing well in it. Can't wait for TPP!

The Colonel is definitely an AI the whole time, and while I think you're meant to question if Rose has been one the whole time as well (The "You have to beLIEve me!" line is so trollish lmao), I think it ultimately doesn't pan out, and explains less than Rosemary being switched out for an AI does.

Like if they have an AI that can actually emote, then why doesn't The Colonel AI resemble Campbell at all? Their manner of speaking and their ability to express emotion is nothing alike.

On the non-vocal front, I'm not particularly a fan of the song itself, but the Love Theme from MGS4 is painfully effective in the right scenes in-game. But really, you can't get too hard on MGS's music, it's all too good.

Metal Gear Solid 4 ran under the assumption that you played everything up until that point, especially 3, because you figure out that Big Boss really was a guy that saved the world at least once. I guess 3 was a first hand, yet romanticized as gently caress look at the declassified files of Snake Eater, which is why the start of the game is Solid Snake saluting to his own father he killed a couple of years back.

To tie everything in though, Kojima tried to pretty much add all of the characters and give them roles. EVA was clear, but Zero being the bad guy was loving dumb because there was nothing to suggest he would do such a thing, but you don't really know because they don't feature Zero in any way other than by name.

Kojima might as well make Metal Gear Solid 6 and 7 have you play as Major Zero to get any idea of why he's such a prick that needs to be stopped, If they won't accurately portray him as a Villain in 5. He murdered most of your people and made you lose everything, including an arm and 9 years of your life. Sounds like a good start so far.

For all of Portable Ops' flaws, it sort of tried to set up Zero as the villain ("The man with the same codename as Null"), but obviously it wasn't particularly successful since the set up was relegated to that single line I just quoted. And even if it was successful, it was still a PSP game relatively few people played.

Just started playing through Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for the first real time (Not counting the demo I played a few years back), and am now finished with Chapter 1.

The action mechanics feel pretty natural, especially once I got a hang of parrying, though I never quite feel like I have any idea of how much damage I am doing to enemies at any give time. Bosses are an exception with their fairly obvious HP bars, and are generally more fun than fighting Gekkos and the like. I'm not too big on the quick time events in boss battles though. A cutscene will start and I'll think I can put the controller down finally but nope I have to mash triangle now that a prompt has appeared on screen. I guess I know to look out for them now, at least.

Not quite sure how I feel about the story or its presentation- part of me loves the whole Dragon Ball Z meets Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots meets Yojimbo thing it has going, while the other part of me doesn't like the idea of Raiden being the main character at all, especially because I wasn't a fan of his "badass" reinterpretation in MGS4. Perhaps there will be a reveal later on in the story to show that all this "samurai honor" stuff is just a facade though.

It's a fun game, but it just doesn't quite click right with the rest of the franchise for me, at least so far.
