This was a really bad show. There were a few good episodes but they only served to show how inexcusably bad the rest of the show was.

Also everyone I know who thinks Voyager was better than DS9 is a gay man and they all think Janeway was an awesome captain. Why do gay men love Voyager so much?

I love how much drama there was behind the scenes, so much more interesting than actual voyager. I wish they were filming or documenting it all. I wish voyager wasn't a real show, the real show was the drama between a bunch of actors trying to work on an extremely lovely startrek.

Nemesis was loving awful. It was clearly startrek made by someone who didn't really like or was familiar with startrek.

The cast was pretty much fine, none of them are awful actors or anything and with proper writing and production the show could have been fine. But the produces let or caused behind the scenes drama, and the writers were awful. So of course half the actors actively hated the show and the rest were just phoning it in. The same cast, characters and even general story arcs could have been fine if the writing was so so bad.

I met the dude who played Garak and he explicitly stated the character was totes bi and would have hosed the poo poo out of Bashir if given the chance. He said the writers had the same sort of idea and wanted to play up his bi-ness or make it a bit ambiguous but thought TV wasn't quite ready for a male bi character. Lady on lady kisses are fine of course, so long as it's a parallel universe.

Voyager never gave up and just said "uhh gently caress I don't know where we're going with this plot, I know, ooooo ancient prophecies and mysticism bullshit, ok we're done" so in that case yes, voyager was better.

I love how many times voyager had some easy way home that wasn't really bad or would only minorly screw over a bad guy but Janeway would be all "NO! If we use this technology *an ethics* might happen and we can't sacrifice our values!!"

Then the next episode she'll commit genocide or something to get some coffee and be all "I'M THE CAPTAIN I MAKE THE RULES!!!"

Christ, didn't she flat out refuse a free trip home at one point because it would "cheapen" their voyage or something and she "owed" it to the crew to let them get home on their own. Holy gently caress I was mad. Really if you look at her actions she doesn't care about getting them home, but reveling in the authority of having a captive crew and no one above her to answer to. She'll commit crimes to save her ship and her command, but never to actually get them home. She wanted to voyage to last forever because as soon as they got home she would no longer be god.

The whole thing feels very much like some fan-writer got a chance to make his episode with the caveat that there had to be sex shoe-horned in. It's... really weird. If you skip past the awful sex scenes it's actually one of the least terrible fan-films and it doesn't even have fat kes in it. It's not even that funny, it's just really strange. Like it's a totally serious and earnest attempt at making a fan episode.

It was clearly made by people who looooove TNG though, they get a lot of stupid details right. Most "porn parodies" are made by porn producers with a passing interest in what ever theme they are doing, while this is the opposite, it's a fan episode made by huge nerds with a passing interest in porn.

True story: I never watched enterprise when it first started as I didn't have a TV when it was on. I heard it was bad and never bothered. Later someone said it was good and I should give it a try, so, now having TV I ran across it and whoa. It had a rad intro and everyone was evil and there were plots and politics and murder. Ok do people just hate it because it's too dark? Oh this is really cool, it's showing pre-federation humans being basically as awful and evil as humans are today. Maybe it's a show about a bunch if imperialistic greedy shits going out into space and learning lessons to eventually become communist space vegans.

Nope, just some alternate universe poo poo, then a bunch of painfully awful stuff about a temporal cold war and archer looking at the camera while saying "Prime Directive" or any other tie-in foreshadowing poo poo, and the worst intro I've ever heard.

There's zero in-universe excuse when you have replicators. Do people even do laundry or just replicate new clothing every day? Send out the new uniform specs via subspace and have everyone replicating the new ones same day.

It's not like there's a huge uniform factory on Mars and supply ships running that poo poo out.

Yeah but like maybe the federation has rules against that for "ethics" or something. Which is also why no else in the entire galaxy does it.

Stupid lazy inconsistencies like that drive me nuts. I don't even think it's spergy to care, it's just really obvious and really really lazy. It's not like "in episode 6 they said the computer works at 67 trillian zetflops yet in episode 98 the computer is calculating PI in 3 dimensions and it takes 3.4 minutes but at previously stated processing speed it should have taken only 92 seconds, did the computer suddenly get downgraded???" it's incredibly lazy episode-specific tech/abilities that are never seen again.

That's at least something I enjoyed about SG-1. They'd do tech/item/ally call-backs over many seasons when it made sense. "Why don't we just use that alien artifact we found 3 years ago that would totally solve this situation?". Sometimes it works, sometimes there's a reason it wouldn't work, but at least people have memories. But you don't get poo poo like Geordi accidentally stumbling upon a way to convert the warp core into a gateway to a dimension of pure unlimited anti-matter while practicing pick-up lines on the holodeck in one episode then them coming to a planet suffering from a severe anti-matter shortage the next and no one loving bringing up that free unlimited source they just invented last month.

I was reading some behind the scenes wiki poo poo the other night. In the TNG episode "conspiracy" the writers really wanted the whole thing set up to be a real conspiracy. They had some foreshadowing in previous episodes of something being up in the federation, and they wanted the episode to be about a starfleet coup of the civilian government. Rodenberry flipped his poo poo saying human society was perfect and incorruptible and starfleet would NEVER do something like that. So they went ahead with the episodes but blamed it all on mind-controlling parasites and gutted out any political commentary.

The exact plot was then used in DS9 along with all the political commentary about security vs liberty. DS9 owns.

Then again the borg seem to have a hard-wired etiquette to allow and ignore guests unless they make a scene.

Humanity has evolved. Notice it was usually lesser cultures using the depraved holosuites? The humans that used them used them to destroy their shoulders kayaking or flying planes or dying in the alamo.

Actually that's a pretty big change too right there that Roddenberry would have hated. I honestly can't imagine Gene allowing a script that had a character off playing violent bloody nationalistic war for fun. Humans no longer glorified war, why would anyone want to get off pretending to be in the battle of britain ? No, humans would only use the holodeck for horse riding or nature hikes or yoga on the beach. Humans only care about self improvement and self discovery and are now near-perfect altruistic beings.

Props to him for having this ridiculously optimistic view of a potential future, but I really enjoy how DS9 showed there's no such thing as a perfect society, and paradise had to be defended from within and without. It's not like humanity just saves up enough culture points and unlocks the last Utopia social reform and then everything is happy forever. Decay and corruption would be something even a utopia would have to be vigilant about. If anything DS9 made the federation more impressive, as it drove home the point that these are still the same lovely humans of today, we've just managed to develop social sciences, government, and economic systems that result in a pretty great society that's lasted for centuries while continuously improving. Roddenberry era next gen almost presented a too-perfect society, like the federation had a massive mind-control conspiracy or everyone had their more negative instincts genetically engineered out of them.
