Has Kreider done anything lately? Are any of his books worth picking up?

From what I can tell, Kreider has transitioned from cartoonist to essayist. A few of his essays have been picked up by the NYT (see: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/author/tim-kreider/), and his website has really slid into a state of neglect.

The Obama-LBJ analogies kind of irk me. Not only is Obama facing a drastically different political/cultural/media landscape than LBJ was, but if you look at the numbers for the House/Senate after JFK was killed, they're astonishing. With nearly 70% of both chambers, all of LBJ's in-your-face tactics were just gravy.

Not to mention that if anybody knows about getting up close and personal, it's Diamond Joe:

I'd highly recommend this compilation of North Korean propaganda posters if anybody's interested in seeing more.

Every time I see a Tinsley comic, I think of the Calvin and Hobbes comic about talking heads:

The only sort of movement I see in Mallard Fillmore comics is the occasional raised eyebrow. For some reason it irks me much more than the content.

I'm guessing that this Lester cartoon is talking about the recent dust-up with RuPaul using and then removing the term "shemale" from the show Drag Race. It was used regularly for six seasons, but last month it was used in an especially questionable way, and then removed after protest from trans groups.

Since this season of the show ended, RuPaul has come out saying that the term "shemale" isn't such a big deal and the people complaining about it aren't representative of the trans community.

So I think Lester is saying "See! Even RuPaul thinks all of this sensitivity is some PC garbage!" in the same way people point to Morgan Freeman saying that Affirmative Action is pointless.

The NYT just published an article about Blackwater with some choice paragraphs:

quote:

WASHINGTON — Just weeks before Blackwater guards fatally shot 17 civilians at Baghdad’s Nisour Square in 2007, the State Department began investigating the security contractor’s operations in Iraq. But the inquiry was abandoned after Blackwater’s top manager there issued a threat: “that he could kill” the government’s chief investigator and “no one could or would do anything about it as we were in Iraq,” according to department reports.

American Embassy officials in Baghdad sided with Blackwater rather than the State Department investigators as a dispute over the probe escalated in August 2007, the previously undisclosed documents show. The officials told the investigators that they had disrupted the embassy’s relationship with the security contractor and ordered them to leave the country, according to the reports.
I'm guessing that none of the regular cartoonists in this thread will have anything to say about it since it's not about Obama, but I'm worried that it's going to get buried with all of the SCOTUS news today.
