Bringing you Barry from the sordid depths of the Internet

Today's cartoon goes for a laugh while observing the newest challenge to our peoplehood.
* * *

In a few short weeks we Jews will sit together as families. And it is at these family gatherings, seated around festive Passover tables, that we will read aloud from the Passover Haggadah, the guide to "the preserving and continuance of Jewish peoplehood."
We, the LSW (Long Suffering Wife) and I, have spent a year producing the Dry Bones Passover Haggadah. We think it is very special. It is what we believe to be the Haggadah that will bring us all together. If you like Dry Bones you'll LOVE this Haggadah. Every page of this traditional and Kosher 104-page Hebrew/English Haggadah is framed by full color Dry Bones cartoons and art. click to see our first review. It makes a great gift. A set will really perk up a Seder. And if you're a curious non-Jew, buy a copy to read the real "Secret Book of the Jews."
We have set up our own Mom and Pop shop on-line, and we fulfill orders directly from our home in Israel. From our family to you and yours. Take a peek at

He's hit the nail on the head. This is exactly, 100%, a correct cartoon.

The BDS movement is not like Nazi boycotts, because rather than being an anti-Jewish movement it is an anti-Israeli-apartheid movement, as evidenced by the fact that there is significant Jewish (but notably non-Israeli) membership.

That was from 1982, by the way. Ascribe your own relevance.

It's actually a little scary that you can really go back and read Bloom Counties from whatever time period and change around some politician's names (and sometimes it's still the same shitheads) and they are just as current parodies and commentary today.

Gotta find the ones where Opus is dumped as the Vice President candidate because he get's the "liberal" label literally plastered onto him from the anti-American committee.

To bring this Penny Arcade discussion full circle, one of the PA guys said that as a young boy, his school had a local political cartoonist come in and talk about the profession once. The whole thing left a sour taste in the PA guy's mouth and he had a disdain for political cartoons ever since.

While in journalism class in high school I once had the opportunity to speak with a political cartoonist from our local paper named Milt Priggy. He told me that his job was to create cartoons that piss people off. The majority of his cartoons that I saw in the paper though were surprisingly bland. Then he showed me all the cartoons that his editor wouldn’t allow him to run. One cartoon in particular showed the grim reaper slam dunking over Magic Johnson and was slated to run around the time we all found out he had the Aids. Talk about a cartoon that would piss people off.

:stare: Well, can't say he's not good at his job.

Pretty much? I mean, it's hard to overstate how much of a shitshow Bush's presidency was, and a significant part of the difficulties Obama has to deal with are directly the result of a consciously and deliberately obstructive right-wing movement, which Fox News epitomizes.

Want to bring up Bok's previous cartoon, just for context:

I know that ranking cartoonists to see who is "The Worst" is pointless, but these cartoons make me think Bok is the second-most virulently racist cartoonist posted here, after Kirschen. Yeah, he's not unique in churning out nauseatingly repulsive racist caricatures, but I get the feeling that for most of them the racism is "just" flavoring for their general misanthropy, like they'd find some reason to hate most black people even if everybody was the same race. Like Muir for example, he doesn't hesitate to openly fantasize about murdering anybody he thinks opposes him, though I'll grant that the white villains back down after the heroes threaten to murder their families, while the non-white villains get shot without the benefit of any warning. Alternately, there's the McCoy brothers, who I'm pretty sure don't feel terribly strongly about politics but are assholes whose biggest joy in life is upsetting people they don't like, and since they know liberals are upset by racism and sexism, that's what they churn out.

With Bok though, Jesus Christ that Nugent cartoon. Ted Nugent calls Obama a "subhuman mongrel," then makes an apology that EXPLICITLY EXCLUDES OBAMA, saying that he should have used more-coded language. Bok's response is to publicly tell Nugent "Ssh! You're not supposed to say that out loud!" There's not really any other way to read that cartoon.

Then you look at the "Golfzilla" cartoon. Unlike Bonsteel or Ramirez, Bok is clearly capable of drawing caricatures that aren't grotesque monsters because he did it right there in that cartoon. Other people have already pointed out how hideous that Obama caricature is, but it's worth mentioning that even though Obama's taking the place of a literal monster in that cartoon, it's utterly indistinguishable from Bok's normal caricature. So that leads us to the golf portion, which Bok is really stressing by calling Obama "Golfzilla," giving him golf clubs, and putting him in golfing clothes, in spite of the fact that golf has absolutely nothing to do with the larger point of the cartoon. What the golf meme brings to the cartoon is simultaneously accusing Obama of being a lazy layabout and also of trying to fit into an upper-class (ie white) culture where he doesn't belong.

So yeah basically I'm in a terrible mood today (for reasons unrelated to political cartoons) and also I think people missed how utterly vile that Nugent cartoon is.
