QuickbreathFinisher posted:I definitely saw anime eyes in the preview. Spoiler on the anime eyes: McKenzie Westmore in a TV guide interview posted:When we go to Japan, the competition theme will be anime and we involve many of the country's greatest anime artists. The contestants jump right off the plane and hit the ground running for a foundation challenge at a beautiful temple in the Japanese countryside. It's epic stuff. If there are anime and monsters, then there has to be tentacles and penises wrecking cities.

All I could think during that "Beauty and the Beast" challenge was that Matt Silva looks like the human-beast from the end of the Disney version. Except without the cro-magnon brows. Or the big eyes. But almost.

Yeah, I'm really pulling for Raashad after this first episode. Silly hair aside, he's definitely got some talent and the story with him trying to take care of his family and pursue his career while getting by as a working stiff is endearing. Hopefully he won't pull an Eric Fox/Roy and let his ambition overrun his work.

One thing I've never understood about this show is why the contestants feel like a creature has to look like where he lives. "Oh, my monster lives in a cave so he's made of rock so he looks like a cave. My monster lives in a temple with Arabic domes so he has Arabic domes all over his head." I live in a house but I'm not covered in hardiplank siding.

Mons Hubris posted:My monster lives in a temple with Arabic domes so he has Arabic domes all over his head." Seriously, look at this bullshit: I'm amazed that neither of them got sent home for that. I can only imagine that Margaret feels like a total loving idiot for losing to it. It's also not like they got left with last pick and didn't know what to do with it, they were the third team to pick a castle/Belle and they chose the Eastern domed castle over three other options and they clearly didn't have the first loving clue about the regional culture. This is my thought as well, technically it looks really good, but my god... Impressed with most of the cast so far, looks like really good batch of contestants, especially when compared to the newbies they had last year.

I think this season may be able to consistently produce some entertaining pieces. I base this on the preview and intro to the show possibly showing all the best ones already which is kind of disappointing.

If they're going to build a guy with head-boobs, they need to build a Rodney Dangerfield too Speaking of uh, polarizing movies, I was watching the Super Mario Bros. movie the other day. And who should I happen to see in the credits as the creature designer, but our beloved Patrick Tatopoulos! I don't know why they never mentioned that on Face Off, he has nothing to feel bad about with that movie. The goombas weren't very good goombas as such, but they were well-executed and had a pretty cool style.

You want a creature to look like something that could actually exist. So you need it to have realistic looking musculature, practical appendages, etc., and you should also take into account its environment when designing it. But that doesn't mean literally attach domes to its face, or make it a rock creature just because there are rocks around. A working knowledge of biology seems like it is really an advantage in this line of work.

A working knowledge of biology seems like it is really an advantage in this line of work. The weird thing is that the judges occasionally chide the contestants for their entries not incorporating aspects of the source photo which was supposed to inspire their designs. I remember the superhero contest in season 2 or something when they were shown cars and challenged to create superheroes who might use those cars and they were instructed to use textures and patterns from the vehicles in their designs. The mentor for that episode suggested that one team put ridges on their character to match the ridges on their car's bonnet and another team glued an eyepatch to their character and Glenn told them they should have bolted it to her face because their car had lots of bolts all over it. All the current contestants would have watched the previous series so they would have seen the judges give that advice several times, I guess that combined with poor design skills, lack of biological knowledge and being unsure about what the judges expect leads to stuff like head boobs and monsters transforming in Castle Greyskull.

I'm watching. Really hoping Rashaad and Tyler's works out, I think they've come up with the best backstory. I'm a little worried about the pollution one getting dinged for being another Borg/Scorpio knock-off, depending on how they do it. And I don't think Team Gravity understands how gravity works, also if they're really having that much trouble with wrist and ankle weights, couldn't they just requisition some off-the-shelf and not waste so much time?
