Welcome to Neocron! The bastard child of Deus Ex and System Shock, born in Shadowrun Hospital. Neocron is a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk MMO. It is considered the first cyberpunk-genre MMORPG, and is designed to integrate elements of first-person shooter games into an MMORPG. Neocron was released in 2002 and has seen a few updates since then. Neocron 2 is not so much a sequel, as it is a graphical and gameplay update, not an entirely new game.

Neocron is currently player run. It is receiving more attention and care than it has in years. There is a complete weapon balance overhaul in the works, as well as some graphical and technical updates. If you had characters on Pluto or Terra, they are gone now. Time to start fresh!

Scroll down to the bottom for Goon related stuff.

Here's a nice video of a guy giving an overview of the game, recently. It's only about 12 minutes long, if anyone is interested:

I. Story:

The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic 28th century. In the mid-22nd century, tensions rose between an expanded Chinese Empire and a joint European/North American Federation of the Free World. The unexplained apparent destruction of the first Chinese interstellar colony ship results in China launching devastating nuclear strikes with stealth missiles. In retaliation, the President gives the command to counter strike with cold fusion long-range missiles. World War III starts on February 17, 2143; it lasts less than 6 hours.
It takes over three centuries for even the most rudimentary civilization to return. By the mid-26th century two great cities had risen from the ashes, thanks in large part to the "Ceres Project”. Originally an MIT project in the early 21st century aimed at storing every aspect of human knowledge on holodisk, it was eventually taken over by the military in response to the murder of the project leader.

A "Subway" station in Neocron city.
200 years later, both cities are but shadows of their former selves: Neocron is diminished thanks to a succession of coups d'ιtat as well as a mass exodus to Irata III, a colony 80 light years away formed by the missing Chinese colony ship, and Dome of York suffers from losing a devastating war with Neocron.

II. General Info:

A lot of the info in this game is like Native American folklore. Some poo poo just isn't written down, and is mostly passed on by word of mouth. I have attempted to gather as much info as I can, into one place.

Classes:

Neocron doesn't have your typical cookie cutter classes that are prevalent in almost every modern MMO, instead you have character types which accel in different areas and then you can specialize your character through skill-point distribution.

The four base character types are Private Eye, Spy, Tank and Psi-Monk. Each of these character types can play different and various roles, with most roles being available to more than one character type. Each class has their own skill caps, as well as class specific gear they can use.

Private Eye

Description: The Private Eye (PE) is not specialized in any specific field. Although all of his skills are rather low at the beginning they are relatively balanced. The player who chooses this class has the option of specializing within a broad range of possible areas later on.

Background: The PE is an average citizen of Neocron who owns a small apartment on the Plaza or the Via Rosso and lives an average life. He gets by via small jobs and is not too proud to carry out courier services for the resident companies. He does, however, have the potential to become a master detective, head hunter, Psi-Fighter, party animal or even a serial killer. It's a long journey for the average guy, though

Strengths:
- No special weaknesses
- Vesatility

Weaknesses:
- Skills are balanced, but only restrictively improvable
- No real specialization

Spy

Description: The Spy has his strengths in the intellectual areas. Although his physical strength is limited, he has a keen intellect in many areas such as hacking and the control of drones, which others are not able to do.

Background: Many representatives of this class have been working for the secret service for several years and are therefore remarkably agile and dexterous. Because of his below-average physical qualities, the Spy is physically slightly inferior to the PE. The Spy can compensate for this deficit through training, as he has the potential to specialize in all possible areas. If he does choose to focus on physical battle, he will have work harder than the PE. He will achieve success faster than the PE in the fields of PSI mastery

Strengths:
- Very high Intelligence
- Good physical flexibility

Weaknesses:
- Disadvantages in all areas that require great physical strength

Tank

Description: The GenTank is a product of the Ceres wars. He is especially robust and strong as he was created for military purposes.

Background: After the war was won, the few surviving GenTanks were left to their own devices for humanitarian reasons instead of being destroyed. As the original genetic 'formula' did not include emotional and mental development, the Tank cannot develop PSI-skills. This emotionally disturbed creature can be extremely aggressive and is skilled in handling weapons of all types. From the beginning, the Defense and Attack values are at a level for which the Spy and Private Eye classes have to practice for a long time.

Strengths:
- Great physical strength and robustness

Weaknesses:
- No psi-skills
- Well below-average Intelligence

PSI Monk

Description: Because of his physical constitution, the Psi-Monk is at a disadvantage in all physical areas. Even with the greatest effort it is almost impossible for him to become a good fighter in the classical sense. On the other hand, all possibilities in the area of Psi-mastery are open to him.

Background: Until the Ceres wars the Psi-Monks were the reigning class in Neocron. It was they who designed the genetic plans for the GenTanks who ultimately settled the war in favor of Neocron. After the war the people, morally enforced by the victory, rebelled against the unfeeling Psi-Monks. The Monks were persecuted and driven into the underground. After legal reforms, the Psi-Monks were rehabilitated and are now allowed to live freely in Neocron. Nevertheless, they are still hated by most of the population.

Strengths:
- Very High Intelligence
- Good Physical Flexibility
- PSI Skills Can Be Highly Developed

Weaknesses:
- Disadvantages in all areas that require great physical strength

Skill Caps:

STR CON DEX INT PSI

PE 60 65 80 60 35
Spy 40 40 100 100 20
Tank 100 100 75 25 0
Monk 20 45 35 100 100

Skills and Attributes:

In Neocron you have five primary attributes and each attribute has a number of associated skills that you can allocate your acquire skillpoints into.

INTELLIGENCE

The skill Intelligence governs the skills requiring a certain amount of brainpower. Intelligence is of great importance for PSI Monks, Hackers, Constructors and similar professions.
In-Game info:

• HACKING - The main skill of the Hacker. Security systems, doors - with a high level in this subskill, disabling security systems is no problem. The level of Hacking determines the number of charges you can use while hacking, as well as the difficulty of the system.

• BARTER - Runners with this subskill get better prices from the many NPC vendors in Neocron. This affects both selling and buying items of all kinds. Intelligence also affects the prices somewhat.

• PSI USE - This subskill describes how well you can use all kinds of PSI modules. It influences the efficiency (damage, healing...) of PSI modules and has a small influence on the amount of a character's PSI energy.

• WEAPON LORE - The subskill Weapon Lore determines how well a character can use the potential of his weapons. It affects precision, aiming speed, range and damage of ranged weapons.

• CONSTRUCTION - This is the fundamental skill for Runners wanting to produce items. The higher the level of this subskill, the better the quality of the produced items (depending on the tech level of the item). A higher skill level also speeds up the construction process and reduces the odds of a failure. Dexterity and Intelligence also affect building items.

• RESEARCH - Through this subskill, the Researcher analyzes items and creates blueprints. He can then sell the blueprints of these items to players or keep them for his own usage. The difficulty of the research process depends on the tech level of the item to be researched. A higher level in the subskill and Intelligence reduce the duration of the process and the chance of failure.

• IMPLANT - Skilled Implanters are valuable in Neocron. Only they possess the skills required to correctly insert implants into the human body. A high level in this subskill speeds up the implantation process.

• WILLPOWER - Willpower is important for Droners, as it influences damage and range of the drones.

STRENGTH

This skill is particularly important for combat and the ability to carry heavy loads.
In-Game info:

• MELEE COMBAT - The subskill Melee Combat determines the melee abilities and damage of a character in close combat with melee weapons like knives and swords. A higher skill level improves the values of damage and swinging frequency.

• HEAVY COMBAT - To use heavy weapons like cannons and flame throwers, a certain level in this subskill is required, depending on the strength of the weapon. A higher skill level improves the values of damage, range, firing frequency and aiming.

• TRANSPORT - This subskill determines the maximal weight a character can carry. This value is displayed in the inventory window, as well as the remaining capacity. The closer a Runner gets to his maximal capacity, the slower he will move. Strength also has an influence on the carrying capacity.

• RESIST FORCE/PIERCING - This subskill influences the resistance of a character to damage against shockwaves, like those caused by explosions. Or piercing, like bullets.

CONSTITUTION

Constituion is equally important for all Runners. The Subskills mostly affect the health and resistance of a character.
In-Game info:

• ATHLETICS - This subskill affects the running speed and jumping height of a Runner, as well as the stamina consumption.

• BODY HEALTH - The subskill Body Health determines the number of health points a character has. If his health drops to zero, he dies and has to be resurrected at a Gene Replicator, which temporarily reduces his efficiency (Synaptic Impairment). The number of health points is also affected by Constitution.

• ENDURANCE - The number of stamina points is determined by this subskill. A Runner with a high level of Endurance is capable of running longer distance. If his stamina drops to 5 or below, he won't be able to run anymore and can only move slowly. As soon as his stamina regenerates to 20 and above, he can run again. The number of stamina points is also affected by Constitution.

• RESIST FIRE - This subskill adds to a characters resistance against fire attacks.
• RESIST ENERGY - This subskill adds to a characters resistance against energy attacks.
• RESIST X-RAY - This subskill adds to a characters resistance against X-Ray attacks.
• RESIST POISON - This subskill adds to a characters resistance against poison attacks.

DEXTERITY

This skill governs subskills requiring a certain amount of aptness, ranging from handling different weapon systems and controlling vehicles to using drones.
In-Game info:

• PISTOL COMBAT - The subskill Pistol Combat reflects the ability to handle the small, manageable and mostly cheap pistols in Neocron. The better the pistol, the higher the level of the subskill has to be. By right-clicking the pistol and selecting "Show info/", you can see the level of Pistol Combat required to use that pistol. A higher skill level improves the values of damage, range, firing frequency and aiming.

• RIFLE COMBAT - Rifles in Neocron excel in the areas of range and often damage. The subskill Rifle Combat reflects the ability to handle rifles. The better the rifle, the higher the level of the subskill has to be. By right-clicking the rifle and selecting "Show info/", you can see the level of Rifle Combat required to use that rifle. A higher skill level improves the values of damage, range, firing frequency and aiming.

• HIGHTECH COMBAT - To use a highly technological weapon like the Fusion Cannon or Plasma Rifle, you need an appropriate level in the subskill Hightech Combat. By right-clicking the weapon and selecting "Show info/", you can see the level of Hightech Combat required to use that weapon. This subskill has no effect on the performance values of a weapon.

• VEHICLE USE - This subskill determines the ability of a character to drive the different vehicles in Neocron, ranging from a simple Hoverbike to a heavily armored tank. While a rather low skill level is enough to drive the Hoverbikes, you have to invest quite a lot to be able to drive a tank.

• AGILITY - The subskill Agility influences your attack speed with melee weapons as well as running speed and jumping height.

• REPAIR - Most items in Neocron can be damaged or degrade through usage. The Repair subskill allows Runners in possession of a Repair Tool to fix damaged items. T be able to successfully repair an item, you need a Repair subskill level at least equal to half the tech level of the item to be repaired. The higher the level of Repair, the faster the repairing process. There will also be more condition repaired in one run and the maximal condition decreases less. Dexterity and Intelligence also affect repairing.

• RECYCLE - With the help of a Recycling Tool, this subskill allows to turn of junk of all kinds into ammunition, chemicals or metals. A high subskill level makes the recycling process faster; Dexterity also influences the speed somewhat.

• REMOTE CONTROL - The subskill Remote Control is used to control drones. Drones can be used for recon, but also for combat. Like with other weapons, you need a certain level in this subskill to be able to use a drone of a given type or model. By right-clicking the drone and selecting "Show info/", you can see the level of Remote Control required to use that drone. A higher skill level improves the values of damage, range, firing frequency and aiming.

PSI-POWER

Psychic Power is the main attribute for PSI Monks. Without it, they wouldn't be able to use their mighty PSI modules. The PSI modules are separated into aggressive and passive modules.
In-Game info:

• PASSIVE PSI USE - A character training this subskill can use passive PSI modules. An example of the simplest modules is the Heal module, which allows Runners to heal wounds. With passive PSI modules, Runners can influence the abilities of other Runners, both in good and bad ways. A passive PSI Monk is a welcome addition to any team, as he can protect his team members and weaken their enemies. This subskill influences the efficiency of passive PSI modules.

• AGRESSIVE PSI USE - Contrary to Passive PSI Use, this subskill is only used for attack modules. These range from simple fireballs and poison attacks to mighty energy lances. This subskill allows a runner to use aggressive PSI modules and influences their efficiency.

• MENTAL STEADINESS - To be able to use a PSI module, one requires a certain amount of Mental Steadiness. Each module requires a certain level in this subskill, depending on the strength of the module.

• PSI POWER - The subskill PSI Power determines the maximal amount of PSI energy a character has. The usage of modules requires a certain amount of PSI energy, based on the strength of the module. PSI energy replenishes over time, the amount of energy regenerated in a certain time depends on the maximal amount of energy.

• RESIST PSI - This subskill adds to a character's resistance against PSI damage.

Professions:

Professions in this game are merely a way to show some simple spec guidelines upon creation. In fact, it is recommended you do your own skill setup when making your character. The ONLY difference you'll see when picking a profession, is a different starting mission from Mr. Jones. You should ALWAYS start as a Driver, unless you are a Psi-Monk, then you can pick whatever the gently caress. I'll list the titles of the professions so you can get an idea of the poo poo you can do.

Assassin
Berserker
Driver
Engineer
Field Medic
Hacker
Infiltrator
Inquisitor
Preacher
Rigger
Scientist
Smuggler
Soldier

Factions:

There are 12 factions in Neocron. Each has there own unique feel and offering in terms of Epic rewards, items sold at their Faction Supply Merchant, and most importantly where they are located and who they are friendly with. I will list each faction, a bit about them, and what their epic reward is.

Pro City Factions

City Administration - CA - The Police. Epic is some copbot power armor.
NExT - NExT - These guys love vehicles. Epic is a 4X4 chaincraft.
Biotech Systems - BT - Specialize in implants. Epic is CON based brain implant.
ProtoPharm - PP - A darker biotech, specializing in implants and drugs. Epic is a great resistor brain chip.
Tangent Technologies - TT - Gun guys. Epic is an excellent high tech pistol, rifle, or cannon.
Diamond Real Estate - DRE - Guess. Epic is a sweet apartment.

Anti City Factions

Twilight Guardian - TG - Ornery dudes that live outside the city in the wasteland. Epic is some grenade. Ooooo spiffy!
Fallen Angels - TG - Tradeskillers union. Based out of TechHaven. Epic is a great tradeskiller brain implant.
Brotherhood of Crahn - Crahn - PSI dudes. Epic is a pretty nice PSI glove.
Black Dragon - BD - DRUGS AND WHORES BABY. Epic is a sweet apartment.
Tsunami Syndicate - TSU - Some other ornery dudes in the city. Epic is a decent assault rifle.

Neutral Factions

City Mercs - CM - Neutral bums that have their own military base. Epic is a decent gatling cannon.

Here's a chart detailing faction relations

PvP:

As soon as you take out your Law Enforcement Chip, you can kill/be killed. The only safe place to be is in city sectors where you can't draw a weapon at all. Other sectors you can, but the cops will take notice and try to blast you away. Be careful when killing friendly/neutral runners, as that will most likely result in a Soul-Light loss. SL is your overall reputation. If it goes below zero, bad things start to happen. Like dropping more items in your belt, and not having any safe slot on your quickbar.

Here is the map for the Wastelands, the area outside Neocron City.

Each and every one of those larger dots, is an outpost. Those outposts can be taken by clans, and they give various bonuses for owning them such as crafting bonuses and access to cheap supplies. These are what our clan will be gunning for.

Now, for a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLP_e0ngNXw

Apartments:

Each and every section of the city has sexy apartments available for you to buy. When you start out, you are given a small apartment based on your faction choice. Use your Apt to store poo poo, look through the city-com, change clothing, or to fondle your naked stripper whores. The world is yours.

Vehicles:

There are A LOT of vehicles in this game. They range from motorcycles, to huge fuckall bombers. While not really used in terms of PvP, they offer huge mobility, and many combat related ones can be quite capable of lategame PvE, if you've got a driver/gunner combo. A great feature of vehicles is that you can repair them with a remote repair tool/repair nanites to gain quite a bit into STR/INT/DEX. It's the closest thing in this game to powerleveling. You start brand new and repair a tank until you cap STR and have like 50-60 INT/DEX. You just need a few million NC to buy the nanites, is all.

III. Starter Guide:

If you are just starting out, it is recommended that you play either a Tank or a Spy. You can gain EXP in many ways in Neocron. However the fastest way is with AOE damage. Tanks specialize in big gently caress-all cannons. Spies can specialize into drones, which is basically 'Neocron Easy Mode'. Offensive PSI can be a fun way to level a Monk, as they get many AOE spells as well.

At character creation you will be given the choice for Class, Profession, Faction, and Skill Point Distribution.

If you are a Spy/PE or Tank, PICK DRIVER for profession. Just loving do it. It gives you an indestructible quad as your Mr. Jones reward.

I recommend you start as ProtoPharm for faction. They have a highly sought after epic, and will be able to easily get into the GoonClan, which is Black Dragon. Other notable options are Tangent Technologies if you plan to be high tech pistol/rifle/cannnon, or Fallen Angels for the tradeskiller chip.

Most of the skill point distribution isn't terrible. You should still redistribute them to your liking.

As a spy you'll want to pick drones, pistols, or rifles. For drones, Willpower and Remote Control is important. For pistols/rifles, Weaponlore is an important secondary skill. Pistols do get a decent AOE rocket pistol, but there are no AOE rifles. The first AOE drone starts at about 27dex, there are three types with designations of MR-,RK-, and RG-.

As a Tank you'll want to specialize into heavy cannons. Melee is awful for leveling. You'll most likely be using grenade launchers, tl20 and 42, up until you can use the more awesome AOE high tech stuff.

As a Monk you'll want to specialize into offensive/aggressive psi-use, for leveling. Any spell with 'Barrel' in the title is AOE. I think you have 4 damage types to choose from.

As a Private Eye you'll probably want to stab your eyes out. This is a more "advanced" class you should play after playing the others. Level either as a Droner, or pistols.

If you use guns/ammo, recycle is a handy skill to have. It allows you to take junk you find while hunting and turn it into ammo/health packs/whatever with a recycle tool. All you need is the appropriate skill level for the tech level of the item.

Even if you gently caress up your Profession choice, or are a Psi-Monk, you can trade ANY Mr. Jones rewards to another runner. So, basically you can just give yourself the quad. Hurray!

Early Game

All runners (players) in Neocron will initially find themselves in the MC5 processing unit. This is intended as a starter area although it is recommended by most players to skip this area entirely and proceed directly to Neocron City proper. Outside of the MC5 building will be your first encounter with a GenRep. Use this to 'teleport' to your primary appartment. Once at your appartment I suggest you speak to 'Mr Jones'. He will provide a series of simple missions designed to ease you into the game and also provides a reward on completion that is unique to your profession. If you need a guide, techhaven.org has profession mission info.

Once you finish your Mr Jones mission, the next few steps are good no matter what class/skill combination you chose. Remember to grab every single GeneRep you see, and ACTIVATE IT.

Head to Viarosso-3, find a City-Com computer terminal, and get some 'Normal Mutant' missions, corresponding to which faction you chose. Head down by the water, and right before the Subway is some Abandoned Rooms with Mutants in it. Kill these and complete missions until you can afford a new weapon/gear, and remember to pick up any bone implants so you can get those implanted later. When you can afford a recycle tool, there should be a Crytons Tech Tools around, a tl55 tool is more than enough. You now never have to buy ammo or medkits ever again.

Once those missions become easy, it's off to Plaza-2. Right across from the Seafood place, and right next to some City-Com terminals is a Abandoned Cellar where you want to be doing 'Hard Aggressor Captain' missions.

Once those become easy, and you've gotten more of a handle on the game, it's a good idea to head out to the Wastelands, specifically the Military Base, in the top left corner of the map. Right outside of MB, to the north, is a bunker with tons of Launcher Cyclops. Do poo poo tons of 'Very Hard Launcher Cyclops' missions. The best path to MB is through to Tech Haven, then to Regants Fortress, and N/W to MB. Grab all Gene-Reps along the way. You'll all be thanking me later on for choosing DRIVER.

If you're not quite ready to leave Neocron City, and you want to explore a little more of what it has to offer, you can head to the abandoned part of town, called the Outzone. In Neocron 1 this place used to have vendors, and apartments, all that poo poo. Now it is host to mobs ranging from mutants, all the way up to hurlers/launchers in some outzone storage sectors. This area is especially good for droners. Just be careful. Here's a Map. Beware of Epic related npcs that might gently caress your happy hole until it hurts. If it still exists afterwards.

Remember, as you go along, to be upgrading your armor/implants/weapons, etc. Implants give huge bonuses not only to individual skills, but +str/con/dex/int or psi, allowing you to access even higher weapons to gain even better exp. The store Boobs and Guns in Pepper Park section 3(Pepper Park:Exit on the GR), sells pretty much anything you're looking for in terms of weapons/implants/armor/tools.

Plaza 1: Thypherea Memorial, is where everyone hangs out, and where you can get yourself poked.

IV. Leveling Guide:

So, you're ready to leave Neocron City, and don't know what to do? For all AOE based classes, it's a good idea to head to El Farid after MB. There are, of course, a huge amount of options, which are detailed below. It's safe to say, if you're AOE, dungeons are a good bet. If you are a single target killer, open world is your best bet.

In the Wastelands: Mid-Level Hunting

If you're a new and low-level character in the Wastelands, here are some essential travel tips that will make it safe for you to travel the several miles it takes to go between cities in almost perfect safety. First, if you're not sure if you can outrun everything where you're at, stick to the edge of the zone. That way if you see something you need to avoid, a quick run to the edge of the zone will put you in the next zone over. Almost everything in the game needs to see you for at least 3 seconds to even notice you're there, so most things are pretty easy to detour around. Activate the genrep in every sector you pass through; if the security code (on the world map) is set to GRA (genrep open to all) or it's controlled by your side and set to GRFR (genrep open to all friends), you can use it if you get killed or to teleport cheaply from your apartment.

As soon as you can stand to do so, travel north by northwest from Neocron City, southwest from the Dome of York, or southeast from the Military Base to Tech Haven. When you get there, follow the signs that say Genetic Replication (or use your NavRay, F9, to find a Genetic Replicator) in sector 2, and activate one of those two genreps. This particular (boring looking) place is right in the middle of everything, and it has vehicle terminals. It is also the easiest way by vehicle to access Regants Legacy, a very lucrative, high level dungeon to the west.

In the Grasslands sectors, as mentioned above, the main risks to give a wide berth are the Anarchy Breed camps (unless you're TS or BD), which are crowded with level 60 enemies, and the various StormBots around communications antennae (if you're anti-Neocron). In the Mountain sectors, the main risk to avoid are flying robots overhead called HoverBots (and variations thereon); go around them. (And in fact, unless you're high level enough to hunt those bots, the hunting sucks in the Mountains.) In the Steppe and Wasteland sectors, the main risk is from Warbots, and the Steppes also have some fairly high level fire-breating lizards and bulls to go around. The Desert sectors' main risk is from Dome of York security robots (if you're pro-Neocron), which can be tough to avoid because there are so many of them. In the lower mid levels, avoid the Canyon sectors altogether.

There are basically three perfect areas for lower-mid-level hunting. The most popular is what most players just call "the bunker." There are bunkers everywhere, but "the bunker" is the one in sector J01, just north of the Military Base, because it spawns a steady stream of level 50 Launcher Cyclopses. There is nearly always a team, sometimes two teams, hunting there. If you'd rather solo, and have even a few points in poison resistance, the Swamps of sectors I02 to I04 and H03 to H05 are absolutely full of amazingly easy things to hunt from level 35 to 60. At El Farid Village in sector I10 there's an underground city infested with level 50+ scorpions that throw flaming darts; wear fire armor and bring area effect weapons, but there's almost always a group there you can join.

From there, graduate to one of the following areas. If you have at least 50 (and preferably closer to 80) levels in Hacking and a long range weapon, you can hunt level 80 and 85 Warbots in the Wastelands from about J01 to J06. There are level 60 to 75 "mauler" fire-breating bipeds and lower level cyborg mutant psi monks in the desert sector around "the graves," marked on your map as Ancient Yucida Village in sector I13; if you're pro-City, beware the DoY bots that are everywhere. Warbots spawn pretty reliably in the Steppes from about I09 to G10; those sectors also contain giant fire-breating lizards and bulls (that don't have to be hacked to loot them) level 40 to 100, not a problem for small groups, especially with longer-range weapons and/or a PPU. Your other basic bet is the Canyon sectors, roughly H10 to H16 and G10 to E13. However, bring a PPU, and wear the best fire-resistance armor you can, because the fire-throwing creatures here range all the way up to level 120, and those mobs spawn whole swarms of level 60 to 80 assistants. If you'd rather avoid the highest level ones, stick to the northern Canyon sectors, from up around Syncon labs down to Tezla factory. (Additional warning: Old Canyon, accessable from E13, is a death trap of hundreds of level 50 to 100 fire-throwing creatures in a small space; bring a maxed PPU. Unfortunately, this is also where the only high-tech pistol smuggler in the game is, too.) In particular, if you have access to Cycrow sector, sector F12, the most popular upper-mid-level hunting area in the game is Outdoor Cave 3 next to Canyon Reloading Point (CRP on your map), also known as one of the "chaos caves," which is a fairly easy to hunt and very predictable source of level 50 to 90 creatures.

Highest Level Hunting

If you've got an anti-aircraft rocket launcher, you can try hunting hoverbots in the mountains, but they take a fairly high level hacker to open and even with one they are a pain in the neck to loot, because once they crash they're almost never "really" (according to the server) where they look like they are (according to your client). There are level 60 to 90 Ceres War mutants with rocket launchers in the basement under Point Red; they sometimes drop a very valuable rocket launcher. If you can take a lot of poison hits and have an area effect weapon (or are an upper-mid-level droner), you can hunt level 90 to 110 giant poison snakes in "the graves" under Ancient Yucida Village in sector K13. More dangerous and not terribly lucrative but very challenging, you can hunt Y Replicants in sectors C10 and C11. If you're pro-City, you can bring a group and farm high level Dome of York security bots in the Desert; if you're anti-City, you can bring a high level PPU and hunt StormBots in the Grassland and Cliff Line sectors. The Worm Tunnels scattered around the desert spawn high level soul clusters and are pretty challenging. The Swamp Caves scattered around the Swamp sectors require a lot of poison resistance, but are good upper-mid to high level hunting and a source of some very valuable drugs. But hands down, the three most lucrative and challenging hunting areas are the Juggernaut Facility, the Dome of York Tunnels and ... MC5 again.

The Juggernaut Facility under sector I09 is basically the same map as Point Red and the level 6-7 Storage Areas in the Outzone; it's full of level 80 to 120 Warbots. If you stop by the Twister Club in the same sector you can get a mission into there that rewards you with the "crossbow" high tech pistol that is a remarkably good weapon. The Dome of York Tunnels are a maze of increasingly difficult "sewer-type" narrow corridor maps full of high level robots that do mostly radiation damage; they will attack everybody, including people from the Dome of York. These are the only source of some very expensive loot, including the famous "ultima" weapon modification parts that add to your weapon's stats across the board. And if you re-enter MC5 in sector H14 from the outside, you can fight the level 120 guards and base commander; if you win, which pretty much takes a good sized team with multiple PPU monks unless you're VERY good, you occasionally get as loot rare parts to the famously expensive "MC5 chips," the rarest and best brain implants in the game.

V. Expanded Info, Tips and Troubleshooting:

Here is some more detailed info on some of the working of the game:

Runner Level

On your skills page you will find a number xx/yy. The first number 'xx' indicates your combat level. This is calculated from your equipment primarily. The second number 'yy' is your overall level. It is the total of all your attributes divided by 5. Each class has 300 attribute points total and thus the level cap is 60 (before implants/drugs/armour).

It is worth noting that when in a team, you will only share XP if you are within 10 combat levels of the other members.

Resists

One, quite complicated, aspect of the game is the resistance system. There are types six of damage; Pierce, Force, Fire, Energy, X-Ray and Poison. The percentage reduction in damage you receive from these damage types depends on how many skill points you have in these areas and the armour points provided by armour & belts.

In the beginning you may wish to avoid speccing points in these areas, but it becomes increasingly important as the game goes on and is absolutely vital in PvP. If you know you will be fighting a certain mob for a prolonged period, it may be a good idea to find out what damage types they do and then spec points/armour accordingly.

Implants

On the implants page you will notice there are a multitude of available slots for various implants. Broadly speaking these are either brain implants, bone implants, eye implants, heart implants, spine implants or gloves. Implants provide various bonuses in attributes and subskills. Be warned though that often implants will detract points from other areas. In general if an implant improves e.g. Pistol Combat, it will also have the effect of reducing e.g. Rifle Combat. This is part of the reason why 'hybrid' setups are so unfeasible.

LE Chip

The LE chip is simply a PvP disabler. It is installed by default in all new characters and is usually kept in until high level. There is an EXP/Cash penalty related to the LE, it starts off very little but can get as high as 50% later on. I would probably take it out when you get your first PA, if comfortable with doing so. Taking it out also gives you an extra brain implant slot. You cannot put your LE chip back in past level /30.

Armor

There is a screen dedicated to armour that is similar in function to the skills page. Here you can place armour in the slots as long as you meet the requirements.

Power Armor

In general armor does not alter your appearance (with the exception of Holovests), however, a high level category of armor called PAs does do this. These items are generally very expensive but increase skills & attributes as well as providing armor resists. There is a wide variety of them and they are usually restricted by class.

Drugs

Drugs are single use items that improve one or many skills & attributes. Their effects in general last for between 180 and 300 seconds. They are rarely necessary for PvE (with the exception perhaps of resist drugs) but they see widespread use in PvP. Particularly popular are drugs such as Redflash which temporarily increase agility and thus runspeed.

Most drugs can be purchased at a Medcare although high end drugs may need to be purchased at the Black Dragon FSM.

Tradeskills & Items

Research

Researchers generate blueprints of items. Blueprints are the foremost requirement when you wish to have an item constructed. To make a blueprint you require the item you wish to make a blueprint of, an empty datacube, a research tool, some research substance in your inventory and finally research skill at least as high as the tech level of the item. Upon completion of research you will obtain a datacube with a list of ingredients to make the item.
NOTE: Research skill = TL is the MINIMUM requirement. Research can fail and sometimes critically fail whereupon the item being researched is destroyed. It is thus important to have much more research skill than the TL of the item to ensure success. A good rule of thumb is 2x the TL.
NOTE: Datacubes can be copied. It is therefore a good idea to keep a copy of an items BP so that you can make copies of it in the future without requiring the item.
NOTE: Datacubes are destroyed upon constructing an item. Therefore you need one blueprint for every copy of the item you wish to make.

Construction

Construction is similar to research in that you may need many more skill points than the TL of the item to ensure success. Unlike researching, construction is not a simple binary success/failure procedure.

You may have noticed that items have various associated numeric qualities. They are as follows:

Condition

This is simply how near the item is to breaking in the form of a xx/yy number. The 'xx' indicates current condition. The 'yy' indicates max condition. Upon 'xx' reaching zero the item becomes 'wrecked' and cannot be used. It can be repaired, although every repair reduces the maximum condition 'yy'. There is, therefore, a maximum number of times you can repair an item before it is totally destroyed.
Handling

This determines how rapidly the crosshair locks onto the target

Damage

Does what it says on the tin.

Frequency

Determines the rate at which the weapon fires.

Range

Determines the maximum range at which the crosshair will still attempt to focus.

NOTE: For ordinary weapons, the stats on shop bought items will be roughly between 40-80% depending on the vendor. Player made items will reach 99% every time with sufficient construction skill. The exception to this is rare weapons. They can reach 120% although this is rarely guaranteed.

The required items to construct somthing are a blueprint of the item, a construction tool, the parts (listed in the BP) and some construction lube in your inventory.

Slots

There is a chance upon building a weapon to obtain empty slots. These slots can be filled with ammo mods and other mods such as laser pointers and silencers.

The maximum number of slots is 5. Getting 5 slots is very rare and as such, 5 slot weapons are much sought after.

Rares

These items are constructed like normal weapons however they don't require a blueprint and instead required 5 to 6 rareparts. These parts are dropped in an unknown form from high level mobs and their form (ie.g. Hull of Cursed Soul or Frame of Particle Nemesis) is determined upon research. These are the most commonly seen weapons used in PvP. As mentioned above, their stats can reach 120%. This is part of the reason why they are so powerful.

NOTE: You can tell that a player has a rare weapon equipped by the 'swirly' seen at the end of the weapons barrel. This is a coloured, rotating particle effect.

NOTE: Rare weapons will have the name of the player who constructed them tagged on the end of the item title.

TIPS!

YOU CAN USE THE NAV-RAY TO FIND MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE THINGS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IN TOWN. BEWARE, SOME LOCATIONS SEEM TO BE BROKEN.

GRAB EVERY GENE REP YOU SEE AND ACTIVATE IT.

START AS A loving DRIVER.

PROFESSIONS MEAN NOTHING, ONLY YOUR STARTER MISSION REWARD. PLACE YOUR STARTING POINTS HOWEVER YOU SEE FIT.

NEVER SPEC INTO ENDURANCE. DON'T DO MELEE.

IN THE HYPERCOM, UNDER CUSTOM CHANNEL, IS THE HELP CHANNEL IN GAME. USE THAT BITCH.

GO TO loving https://techhaven.org FOR ITEM/CLASS/EVERYTHING INFO.

DON'T DRAW YOUR WEAPON IN TOWN.

You can respec and change factions later on, so don't worry if you hosed something up.

Pokes/Pokers
A ‘poke’ is the slang for getting an implant inserted into your brain. Most people don’t have any implant skill and need another person to do this for them. You will probably see things like ‘Need tl 115 poker at ……’

How do I get into my appartment?

Use the NavRay to lead you to 'Primary Appartment'. The password is your character's name.

What are these 'quick access belts' I see lying around?

Un-LE'd players will drop one (maybe more depending on soullight) item at random upon death. The first slot in your quickbar is an item that won't drop. These belts can be hacked open by other players. You can return to your belt and open it to regain your item.

How do I enable/disable player trade?

Pressing ALT + k will toggle trade on and off. It is a good idea to turn it off during PvP as some unscrupulous players may attempt to open trade with you to distract/slow you.

How do I GenRep to other locations?

You can only GenRep to locations where you have 'tagged' the teleporter. You need to pay a fee of 150nc to activate GenReps.

Where can I buy furnishings for my appartment?

There is a vendor in Via Rosso 1.

I'm stuck! How can I fix this!?

Type '/set reset_position 1' this will freeze you and return you to a fixed point in the sector after 1 minute.

How do I start a clan?

Clan keys can be bought from FSMs

What is an FSM?

These are vendors in each factions HQs that sell special items. You need to be a member of the faction and have 90 sympathy with that faction to purchase items.

What is an epic mission?

Each faction has it's own epic quest series. This series can be started at level 10, but the final mission requires a level of xx/45. Many of the epic quest reward items are much sought after by other players.

Can I change faction?

Yes. It costs 300,000 nc and requires 50 faction sympathy with the respective faction

Troubleshooting:

"It keeps saying "Disabled for 17 minutes." I checked the forum, it only talks about not using special characters. I didn't use any. Waiting for 20 minutes didn't seem to help."

If you get this error change your password and don't put any special characters in it like !@@#$%^%* etc. etc. Only use base numbers and letters.

Help I'm in the matrix and I fell off the matrix bridge and I'm at the bottom of the matrix and can't leave. Please send the cyber fire department with a big cyberladder."

I believe if you type in the chat window /set_kill_self 1 or /set kill_self 1 you suicide and can respawn somewhere outside the matrix.

VI. Goon/Clan info:

NEW CLAN VOIP, TEAMSPEAK: neptunium.typefrag.com:9265 password: Taco

Here is the mumble info from the PGS Camping the Stairs thread.

Here is the Spreadsheat of Active Goons. Please add yourself to it.

The GoonClan will be in Black Dragon. Unless you are pretty experienced with Neocron, it is NOT advised to start fresh as Black Dragon. For ease of joining the clan it would be advisable to play as the following factions: Protpharm, Biotech Systems, Black Dragon

Other alternatives that won't be hard to get into the clan: Diamond Real Estate, Tangent Technologies, Brotherhood of Crahn, City Mercs, Fallen Angels, Twilight Guardians

Factions that will take a bunch of effort to get into the clan: NEXT, Tsunami

You can very easily switch factions by doing very easy recycle missions, and paying 300k to the NPC. So, don't worry. You can't even join a clan until you take your LE out.

It is intended to be a more whole guide to the game, than I could find anywhere else. If I missed anything you'd like to see, or hosed something up, let me know.

This section reserved for class builds, and any huge game updates. I will paste the Tank build I put in the last thread, and continue to work on the others as I cap my Spy/Monk/PE.

I wouldn't use any builds you find online, as they are probably outdated.

Builds revolve entirely on what items you can get and use. Then you build around item requirements. Specific stats get priority in PvP. Energy/Piercing resist is really important, as well as having enough agility/athletics to be competent.

Force resist is pretty worthless for PvP.

For a tank you'll have enough transport to take enough ammo, 245ish heavy cannon with gear bonuses, and 75+ piercing resist under strength. Intelligence should go entirely into weaponlore. Dex is enough high tech to use rare cannons, so like 80+. After 15 vhc and 42 recycle everything else should go into agility. Con points should be 75 body health including bonuses to use the tl75 nanite heal tool. No points into endurance, ever, for any role but a melee tank. 50 poison/xray, 50-75 into fire, 75+ energy and rest into athletics(about 90+ at that point). This gives you a nice basic build with good resists and damage. You could do the proto resist chip as well as the ncpd resist chip coupled with camo pa(resist armor) to be more 'tanky'. Or you could go for all offensive implants and a regular pa if you have great aim.

Also, you want the gamma bone set for PvP. The standard bones all give force resist which you don't need. Hardly anyone uses missiles or other force intensive damage types, unless you're looking at an ammo modded cursed soul, heavy cannon rare.

In the last thread, I was told that the LE's drawbacks are back in the game (reduced XP and cash rewards starting at a certain rank). It would also be important to warn new people that you cannot put your LE back in after rank 30.

Thanks for this. And I made it to MB. Can't really hunt there yet but I have the genrep activated.

So any Psi Monk advice? Do you level as APU and then LOM to PPU if that is what you want? Is grouping a thing really?

Yeah, usually you lom to PPU later. It's quite possible to do PPU from the beginning if you have friends to group with. Groups happen a lot, randomly, but it's not as if they are planned out, synergy wise.

I started a PE Assassin with Black Dragon as a first character, I figure removing my LE is not gonna make things much worse :black101:. I'll make a driver sometime to get the free vehicle too.

I guess realistically if I want to be a rifle specialist though, a spy is the best since they have the essential extra int which gives better weapon lore. Is this assumption correct?

It's not even about weapon lore so much. It's mostly about being able to reach around 115 DEX for the really good rifles. If you go PE, I'd probably go pistols. Going drones at first would help you leveling, but it's all up to you. You pretty much chose hardcore mode for your first character, class and faction wise. Goonspeed!

What does it mean when the quickjobs ask you to kill 5 somethings in the local area. Does it mean that the enemies are spawned inside the map that I'm currently in when I accept the mission?

Just got killed when the delivery mission directed me into the headquarters of a hostile faction. Just gunned me down in the lobby. They could've just asked me to leave, the dicks.

This seems way too janky to be worth it, but I'm just getting too much of a System Shock 2 vibe to stop before giving this a chance.

The quick kill missions are just that, find 5 things and kill them. It is better to know where some things are and take missions to kill them than to get a mission and go looking. The old thread had a post with information about Abandoned Rooms and Abandoned Cellers and doing mutant and agressor captain kill missions. I did those and have been doing well.

And you should check out the Outzone if you want a real system shock 2 vibe. I tried to go there to get to a vendor and it was just too dark and creepy, especially for a droner.

Outzone Sectors 4-5 are so chock full of mutants it's a fantastic way to grind with some AoE. You literally cannot walk a few meters without running into a mutant patrol (Aggressors/Captains, Warriors, Corporals, etc). I was told that also there are Launcher Cyclops and Butchees in the various mini-dungeons within Outzone Sectors 4-5 so go do some exploring. And as the previous post suggested, its a pretty creepy place.

So the thing about local area is just flavor text and I'm just supposed to kill 5 units of the specified enemy type. Dang, that seems silly. I guess I'm gonna go swim in some sewers and write down what I find.

Forget your RoboCoX or your StickyCoX or your EvilCoX, MY CoX has Blinking Bewbs!

WHY IS THIS GAME DEAD?!
I was quite surprised to find Neocron is still alive. I played it when it first came out and a for a few weeks of beta beforehand. Initially I was impressed; the postapocalyptic cyberpunk feel was perfect, and the idea of a MMORPG that looked and played like a 3D shooter was a cool concept that worked. I made a psi-monk and spent many hours shooting cyclopses in the abandoned basement, then huge hulking monsters out in the wasteland.

However, it seemed that after launch, the devs went into hiding. Bugs and balance issues lingered on and on. The only playable classes were monk and tank; private eyes did nothing well, and drones were horribly buggy, plus a player could walk up and kill your drones without soullight penalty. Actually, soullight had almost no teeth back then, so grief PvP was rampant.

I played for about 6 months, but the bugs eventually won. Vehicles were so buggy no one used them. The stock market didn't work half the time, and when it did work it spewed out cash like a broken slot machine. Hacking was useless; 2/3 of the hackable locks were so easy anyone could hack them, the last third were so hard you needed a character devoted to hacking, making him useless at anything else.

Worse, there was just nothing to do at high levels. I maxed out my character after 2 months, and then there was no place to go. The map was full of interesting looking places that were totally empty. There were outposts to take over and defend, but they made less money in a week than a good player made in an hour of farming. After 6 months I quit and assumed it would die soon.

It's kind of cool to see that the community has taken over, but things havent improved much. I downloaded the client yesterday, made a monk, went to my apartment (the nav-ray is still useless half the time), clicked on a chair, sank halfway through it and had to relog. I accepted the Mr. Jones mission to talk to some doofus in Plaza-1, and made my way there mostly by relying on old memories. Along the way, I clicked on the NPC at Venture Warp, and the game hung and I had to force-close the client. Logging back in and arriving at plaza-1, there was a marker on the edge of the screen for "Mr. so-and-so", but I couldn't lock on to it and gave up after 20 minutes of wandering. I made a new Tank and took the Mr. Jones mission, which had me get a bear rear end from a guy and take it to another guy at 'construction place'. The nav-ray for 'construction place' took me to a weapon shop. I gave up.

Holy hell the cyclops bunker is effective.
I activated all kind of genreps in the wastelands, had adventures and finally checked out the infamous bunker north of the military base. In a matter of about one and a half hours I got from 35 strength to 56 strength. Now I need to find a new weapon, new implants, new armor and a new everything. Oh well.
I never expected this place to be so potent - give it a try!

It's really quite amazing to be honest that its still going, given it was pretty much panned when first released and forgotten about. I'm downloading the client at the moment and I was surprised to find my account still exists! Looking forward to it - it was rough around the edges, but it had a certain charm to it and there's no other MMO out there that quite gets cyberpunk right.

Is there supposed to music in this game or is that something that only happens in the wasteland? I guess I could just play the Deus Ex soundtrack on a loop while STABBING BEES IN A SEWER.

Is there a way to avoid getting a mission that leads into a hostile factions HQ? I checked the info on the city admin and they're not allied with the NEXT, but a mission sent me there to die anyway. Am I just supposed to abandon the job and eat the 20 buck charge? Does cancelling a job change my reputation?

Also is there way to have at least neutral reputation with all the factions? I noticed on some player list ingame that showed there were two players with no faction.

The way hostile works is sort of wonky. If your enemies with any faction, the faction HQ guards will open up on you as soon as they see you. By default over time relations with factions will be as follows:

Allied: 14
Neutral: 10
Enemy: 4

I believe that is correct. Factions are hardcoded relation wise to be hostile to the factions they are hostile with. Nothing can change a faction being Hostile to you unless you hop to a different faction which has a different set of allied/hostile table list.

Also what missions are you doing that are leading you to hostile HQ's? 'Kill X' of missions you just go to the appropriate areas to fight, unless its perhaps a faction epic mission you shouldn't be sent to a hostile HQ.

I gave up.

I've never seen someone have so much trouble. If you decide to ever try again, you should pop on mumble.
