Frequently Asked Questions

What's all this about DRM and used games?
The Xbox One was initially announced as an "always online" console, with mandatory check-ins every 24 hours. This would allow games to be played off the hard drive without the disc, and give users the ability to instantly access their entire game collection from any Xbox One console. Used games would have to be sold and purchase from approved retailers. However, after facing an intense backlash, Microsoft has since abandoned all such plans. Xbox One game discs will function exactly how they did on Xbox 360. As long as you have the disc, you're good.

Will they bring back the DRM?
The DRM was… not popular, and there is no reason to think it would be received any more warmly in the future. Microsoft has expressed interest in eventually bringing back some of the more positively received features, like digital game sharing. It is extremely unlikely that Microsoft will force any major changes from the current status quo, but ultimately this is a personal judgement call you should make for yourself.

Is the Xbox One region free?
Yes, it is region free by default, though publishers can enact region locking if they so choose. Historically, publishers have rarely chosen to region lock games on region free platforms.

Do I have to buy things with Microsoft Points?
No, both Xbox One and Xbox 360 will use real currency.

What's the situation with headsets?
A mono-headset is included with every Xbox One. Additionally, the Kinect can now track audio from specific individuals, greatly reducing background noise. Third party headsets will not be supported until March 2014, when Microsoft releases an adapter. Both new Xbox One and old Xbox 360 headsets will work with the adapter. So far Turtle Beach is confirmed to be developing multiple headsets specifically for Xbox One.

Are Avatars crossing over?
Avatars are still present, though in a limited capacity. It seems that they are now exclusively there to pose for gamer pictures.

What are the options for expandable storage?
The internal hard drive is 500gb, and is non-replaceable. If you need extra space, you will someday be able to attach any USB 3.0 external hard drive. No more proprietary storage! This will work for game installs, game downloads, game saves, etc.

Does the Xbox One support game installs?
Yes, game installs are actually mandatory. You will still need the disc in the tray just like on 360, but the game will install itself automatically.

Where are all the indie games?
Microsoft is a little late to the party on the indie side, but they've made some great strides recently. Plenty of indie studios have already been given development kits, and eventually Microsoft will allow any retail console to be converted into one. Self-publishing is now allowed, and indie games will no longer be segregated from the rest of the marketplace. They're full-fledged games, complete with achievements.

Can I use the HDMI-in port for *insert device here*?
The Xbox One will accept video input from any HDMI capable device, even *COMPETING GAME CONSOLE*. The signal will be slightly delayed, though.

Does the Xbox One use HDCP? Can I use a video capture device?
It does, but only for video media (Netflix, Blu-ray, etc). Games will not be affected by this, so gameplay can still be easily capture via external devices.

So when's the Kinect-free SKU coming out?
June 2014

Do you have to pay extra to use Netflix?
Not anymore. Starting in June 2014 Microsoft has moved most things out of the Xbox Live paywall.

How do I buy Xbox One games on the website?
Go here: https://store.xbox.com

Technical Support

When I try to start a game or app, the screen just turns black and nothing happens. What do I do?
This doesn't happen often, but with an always on console with background patching I guess you can expect an occasional hiccup. All you need to do is a hard reset of the console. What this means is, if your default shut down method leaves the console in "instant on" mode, you'll need to bypass that and make sure your Xbox One turns all the way off. See the next question.

How do I do a hard reset or cold boot of the Xbox One?
"To perform a hard restart, hold the power button for 10 seconds while the system is on. The system will turn off. When you hit the button again, it will start and display the green start-up screen. All your data is preserved, but cache is cleared and some settings are reverted and log-in or game start issues are resolved.

Alternatively, you can perform a full shutdown by going to SETTINGS > POWER & STARTUP and change POWER MODE from Instant-On to Energy-saving. After changing the setting, choose "Turn Xbox off". It can be powered back on by holding down the GUIDE button on the Xbox controller or the button on the front of the Xbox console. Once it's back online you can go back to SETTINGS > POWER & STARTUP and re-enable Instant-on.

If the manual button/menu-initiated reboot doesn't work, do it the old-fashioned way: power down the Xbox One, unplug it, wait for 10 seconds, plug everything back in and power it back on. "

My Kinect is randomly turning on and off/resetting, how do I fix it?
Supposedly, some people have problems if their Xbox One is plugged into a power strip rather than directly into a wall. One troubleshooting step might be to correct that. I can not personally verify the information on this one as my stuff has been plugged into a surge protector for a year now with no problems. But FYI. http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/system/connect-power-supply

Yeah, I think the feature is cool, but given that in almost all cases, it is my account that anyone in my house wants to log into, I miss the old way. It would be nice to have both as options.

Realized tonight that for auto login to work, Kinect not only has to see you, but you have to be holding the controller with the IR blinkers pointed at the Kinect. So if anyone's having issues with it flat out not recognizing you, try that. I tended to not pick the controller up when turning it on for Netflix, so auto sign-in never worked. :smith:

Now I patronizingly wave it at the Kinect, which it seems to grasp, though I feel the sarcasm is lost on it.

EDIT: Wait, does it handle it differently if you turn it on via voice and never turn on a controller? And if it does, why the gently caress can't it find me without the controller even if I turn it on with one? :argh:

I tested this just now, just to make sure, and it was able to auto-sign me in whether or not I had a controller in my hand. Also didn't matter if I turned it on via voice, or via controller and put the controller down before it came on.

Maybe you should go back through the setup for it?

The only time it doesn't recognize me is if I am laying on the couch with my face partially obscured by my laptop.

Played a few hours of the Titanfall beta today. It was good fun. These are not my type of games, normally, but the movement and titans make it a lot more interesting. The smart gun is pretty slick for killing the bots, but it really feels like it is too weak to go toe to toe with real players. I really prefer normal weapons for that.

Also, I love the new patched UI for games and apps with the space remaining on the side. Very slick.

When I go into Manage my installed data for Dead Rising I see the game itself, the addons, and then in a seperate grey snap in looking thing, my saved data. If I select that, I see the options "Delete from console or Delete everywhere".

So maybe it defaults to just the delete from console option if you delete the game without managing that seperately?

I may not pick it up until some future digital sale. I am so very annoyed that I could get 10 dollars back from the Microsoft store by preordering it, but there is no parity on the digital marketplace, that I refuse to buy it for now. I know it probably seems weird and petty, but they are really making it hard for me to stay with digital only like I wanted to. It was one thing when sellers like Amazon had better deals, that is almost expected, but now even their own physical marketplace has better deals than digital and it is kind of the last straw for me. :(

It has nothing to do with being negative. I myself, the OP of the current thread, have posted plenty of negative items in this thread. It has to do with being a topic that is way too outsized and involves way too many other things, to be relevant to this thread. It can easily sustain it's own thread, and it actually has way more to do with gaming in general than just the XBOX. Metrics was a hot button piece of this discussion and they are utilized in almost all games now, including on Playstation and PC.

The reasons this should *mostly* be discussed in its own thread should be pretty clear to anyone with a lick of sense. I'm not a mod and I'm not going to tell you what you can or can't discuss in this thread, but I'd certainly appreciate it if we didn't have to keep rehashing this same topic over and over and it basically locks off all other discussion because it is just so big.

Now if some new revelation comes out that is specific to the Xbox One, like someone monitors their network traffic and finds out that Microsoft is lying and they are in fact streaming live video and audio 24/7, then please come post about that ASAP.

My two cents.

I dont think there is an issue with the same questions coming up over and over again, its just the same questions coming up over and over again that have very simple answers that could be answered with a bullet point in the OP because every time they are discussed in the thread it leads to console warriors taking up arms.

I'm happy to add something to the OP about this if someone wants to compile a quick list of the examples so far. Something like "Be aware that multiplatform titles so far seem to have better frame rate/Resolution on the competing platform, here are examples:"

For what it's worth, I don't think that will or should halt discussion on that topic though as new examples arise.

Also, imho, it is more annoying to have a meta-discussion for pages about what we can discuss, then just discussing things. :)

The vocabulary for voice commands is wildly inconsistent and kind of defeats the point if you have to have a cheat-sheet nearby. This has been a complaint people have voiced before, but it's worth repeating. They really should have gotten a variety of phrases to handle specific commands, and I'm still surprised that's not been patched in. I've not heard any information on it increasing in accuracy based on repeated user input. The voice recognition is all local, Siri works by sending your message to their servers for processing.

This one is really weird for me. In the age of amazing Google Now and Siri, the inflexibility of the voice commands and seeming inability to learn just seems weird. I'm hoping this is still coming in a patch behind the other things they probably gave more priority to like Friends/Parties/etc. Although, I learned the commands quick and haven't had problems using voice commands until the recent patch, my wife still runs into issues and it would be nice if it was more flexible.

On a lighter note, my wife and I were watching TV the other night and it was a bit hot and she reflexively said "Heater - turn down." and then sat there for a second before going "..oh." Kinda funny. I am probably about to sell my Xbox because we have our first kid on the way and I doubt I'll have time for it, but I think she's actually gonna miss the voice commands.

This is hilarious. Despite her problems with it at times, my wife loves the voice commands too. My son actually tries to use them but it somehow knows(his tiny voice?) that he has no power and never listens to him.

Crunching Koalas ID experience is really interesting. They've posted about it on GAF and while they're not entirely enthused, they've been definitely complementary about the program and Chris Charla in particular.

Yeah, that piece jives with what Shalinor posted earlier too. It sounds like they have some of the right pieces in place, and are in some aspects better than Sony, but not all.

Video game graphics are generally sharper/have higher contrast edges than movies. Movies are always "perfectly antialiased", so differences in resolution are not as obvious. Telephone lines never "shimmer" in movies.

That is super interesting. I'd never really considered that.

Even after reading Gold vs. PS+, I can't find any reason why PS+ is any better except that it's the price of a sandwich cheaper per year, and it already has the Monthly Free Games thing on it, which will come for the Bone later this year. Not requiring a subscription to use Netflix etc is nice and all, but also totally a moot point for people living outside US/UK. It's retarded Gold is necessary to use Skype etc, but does anyone actually use Skype/Facebook/web browsing on consoles? I've used it like once for the sake of a gimmick, then never touched it again. If I hated using the Internet so much, I'd buy an Apple Pippin.

Look, be fair here, even if you personally seem unaffected by the items mentioned, PS+ is *currently* objectively better than gold. Will Gold catch up at some future point with their own free games, etc? I certainly hope so. It is a step in the right direction that they have at least committed to do it and kept it going on the 360 rather than ending it as originally planned.

I haven't bought any of the asset packs yet, but iirc there are theme packs (Desert, Haunted, Druid, etc.) Which contain all the relevant assets (props, sounds, terrain, effects, brains etc.) or you can buy pieces of them individually.

Oh, is Project Spark Free To Play? I didn't realize it was that kind of game. How much would it cost to buy all of the theme packs that are currently available?

I hope they keep up the pace and content of these updates, it's really starting to shape up as a good OS/UI now. Next on the list is External HDD support according to twitter/reddit!

Yeah, I would certainly prefer if updates continued at this pace throughout the life of the console.

Did this update fix not being able to voice command the Xbone to turn off? That poo poo was aggravating.

I was having this issue, off and on. It is hard to say if it is fixed, but I'll say something if I see it happen again post-patch.

Also; every single home device from now until the end of the need for software patching should include as a feature a way to look at a change log.

Seriously. I'd love a change log.

What about charging full price for a game but hiding content as if it were a F2P title? That is currently being done with every MS published game for the X1 (Forza, Ryse, etc).

I can't speak to every game, but Dead Rising is Microsoft Published and does not have micro transactions. It now has DLC/Season Pass, but that isn't unusual in this day and age.
