That said, the Class Change Stat Requirements is actually why I give Embodiment of Desires a slightly higher value as an Initial Emblem for the Main Character: Because how it affects dropped treasure (provided the enemy doesn't have a special equipment to drop), it gives a kickstart in piling up enough Stat Boosters to change class at lower levels than the natural growth of a Unit's Class would allow, specially when the goal is a Magic-oriented Class like with the "inconspicuous" Fire Chaotic Lady Soldier.

Vespa 2: The Vespaning

Right then, first thing's first.

I apologize if changing anyone's gender offends them. There've been lady rabbis, right?

Alas, poor wallet. :(

Anyway, since we can't exactly afford new gear, some sacrifices have to be made.

Because equipment is tied to movement speed, naked ninjas are actually a viable strategic option! Not so much everyone else.

But yeah out with the old, in with the new!

Since letting him die is a Very Bad Idea, Merc gets the shiny new Dragon Shield, making him effectively invincible right now.

But enough about equipment, we have work to- wait I already used this joke.

You wouldn't know it because I'm bad at planning unlucky, but random encounters have a red ENCOUNTER bubble.

Like this one. Fight It Out is reserved for story fights and sidequests, so guess what we just stumbled rear end-backwards into! Yes, if you decided to go shopping after the last battle, there's a very good chance you'll end up in Vespa again.

And that's the sitch. Rescue purple fairy from blonde fairies and company.

It...may be hard to tell you guys apart for a couple missions. Ivanna and Kamui come along because fighting seven lvl 4 enemies with a squad of lvl 1 guys would probably take a while!

Funnily enough, we don't actually have to protect Miss Tiny Fairy. I mean, we will because we aren't assholes, but yeah.

I wonder if we should give her a hand...?

Mercury Loeher: kind of a dick?

Anyway, this is the first mission without a boss; we just have to murder everything.

We've got three Griffins, two Gremlins, and two Fairies to worry about. Basic plan here is to form some kind of defensive perimeter for our buddy to hide behind. Hold on a second, you might be thinking, what's the point of formations if every enemy can fly. And to that goon sir, I say shut up.

Tiny Fairy, to her credit, is decidedly unsuicidal. It helps that guests move first.

Aw yeah naked ninja ti-

Oh. No that's a silly idea.

Much better! Kamui doesn't need equipment to throw shuriken! Somehow?

Look at that nice wall. Surely this will prove vital toward fairy defense.

Or maybe it'll be completely unnecessary. Fairies (and gremlins) are the ultimate lightweights: they can't take hits but they can't dish them out either. And they use bows pretty much exclusively.

Pictured: the perfect defense. This is a very pleasant rescue mission. While it does serve as an introduction to flying units, most of them aren't dangerous at all, and being a fragile long-range unit herself, TF keeps well out of harms way. This revolutionary new advancement in escort mission technology would tragically come far too late in the saga of fighting ogres.

Anyway, these griffins are the main worry, being capable of consistent double-digit damage, but there are only three of them and we've got this one on lockdown.

And even if we didn't, Ivanna's got things covered.

And even if she didn't, the griffins aren't terribly threatening anyway! Despite the level difference, this mission's pretty not bad.

Despite the ease, the level difference still means Kamui is our biggest damage dealer (besides Mercury but that's a given).

Ugh no don't go over there. Flying enemies give no shits about such petty things as terrain and obstacles and can be a huge pain!

Noooo my perfect defense!

Seeing his strategy collapse so utterly, Mercury tries a different tactic.

Surely these crazed beasts share Mercury's passion for Jane Austen.

Atta'boy. :unsmith: (that is totally a jump for joy!)

Also I kinda sorta maybe made Merc a Beast Tamer for this mission. It makes a huge difference for persuading griffins!

And now we have a friend! It is interesting that persuaded enemies are not immediately added to your ranks. This is so you can keep utilizing the mechanic even if your squad's full, though it does mean you have to keep new (likely near death) friends alive. And they generally aren't as interested in self-preservation as our fairy friend.

As if to hammer home what Cubelley just avoided, J. Totes scores our first kill.

And is appropriately compensated.

Cubelley helps! A little bit. Griffins aren't that great. :(

Meanwhile Geese's been tracking down this stray fairy. They don't take hits well, but they also don't take many of them!

Geese makes a Han Solo joke on her face, but it isn't enough.

He finishes the job next turn, though! The moral was supposed to be "Don't attack fairies from the front," but I'm okay with this.

Rabbi was similarly dealing with this guy but, well, if there's one thing more annoying than running down enemy archers, it's running down enemy flying dodgy archers.

Eventually things start winding down.

Incidentally, one really cool thing about bows is that they can actually hit beyond their visible range!

At the cost of accuracy, but still, an archer with a good height advantage can be kinda useful.

Anyway, that's that.

And my poor wallet yet aches.

Provided you have the room, persuaded enemies will offer to officially join you after battle. I have a hard time turning people away. :smith:

---

Because there are so many beasts here, it's dangerous to be on this island.

Note, not this area, the entire island!

I just came from the forest, so I'm not used to the outside world. If possible, may I join you? I'm looking for my sister.

Alright, you can come. But... don't do anything dangerous.

Thanks! We'll have plenty of time to get to know each other. Oh, my sister's name is Lubina. She ran away from the forest where we live because she thought it was boring there.

Well that's as good a reason as any!

That's some pretty good equipment! And that's the thing about Glycinia. See, her sidequest isn't guaranteed to come up when you pass Vespa, and if you don't go back to town, you won't see it at all. She actually shows up in many different locations that change as you progress through the storyline, so you can't permanently miss her. That said, her equipment changes quite a bit depending on when you find her. What we have now is definitely good for where we are, but some of the stuff you can get from her at the end up the game can't really be gotten any other way. This includes the best bow, which kinda sucks!

Oh well!

Anyway, next time we're finally going to Formido for real. Stuff will happen! It'll be exciting!

Hoping that stats won't count as spoilers here, but from the documentation I've seen Knights actually have basically the best physically oriented stat growth in the game. Other classes might have better skills, movement and equipment so you'd want to use them for fights, but for leveling up physical characters Knight is almost always the way to go.

Alright, here we go, for real this time!

Wait hold on a second.

Before now, all our battles have been in somewhat wide-open areas. That changes here, and as such, the extra point of movement Merc gets as a ninja is definitely worth the ten point drop in defense.

The ones sent from Felis at the request of the South?
I hired pirates to attack them, but some survived and made it ashore. Grimal, use the troops stationed here to protect this fortress.
Yes, sir... But how about you, Commander Briffaut?
That young lass's calling me. She'll be mad if I don't come soon.

JRPGs!

They're making fools of us!

Abandon this fortress and withdraw to Naja immediately. Otherwise...

I bet he's always wanted to say something like that.

Commander Briffaut, look!
They're here already? Much earlier than anticipated! This fortress is critical to movement in the South. It's up to you, Grimal!!!

Are you running away? Don't you have any guts?!
Shut up, kid. I have no time for you. Remember, I'm Nichart Briffaut, the leader of the White Fang Troops.

It's kinda cute seeing Mercury try the same kind of taunts he fell for like a week ago.

So we have an actually somewhat balanced enemy force! Three soldiers, two archers, a wizard, a cleric, and a knight. Thankfully Grimal doesn't subscribe to the same school as Ivanna, so we only have one healer to deal with.

The enemy also has a much better position than us. There are two routes up the fortress, but the other is across the moat/pond and isn't worth the effort, plus our team's a little too weak to split in half right now anyway. The main goal is just to get up onto even footing as fast as possible, which'll be easy since we don't have any mages. Kamui and Ivanna are reprising their earlier roles, and Glycinia is coming along for a secret mission.

Also also, a cool thing about this game that I haven't mentioned yet is that enemy levels all scale to Mercury's. Bosses will be two levels higher and everyone else will be as strong as him. This can be easily exploited by just not using your main character, but c'mon that's no fun!

Some of the early battle themes are pretty bad (like the one for training), but most are good stuff, especially considering the system.

A kid like you is the leader? Luck's been on your side so far, but that ends here!

Rain begins to fall once Grimal brings up the disturbing correlation between religious armies and child soldiers.

More importantly, Mercury shows off his ninja speed and gets things started on the first turn.

While J. Totes shows off what happens when you fire a bow uphill. I believe inclement weather also negatively influences arching accuracy.

Cut to the next turn, where Deneb's decided to take Lodis' soldier shortage into her own hands.

;-*

Vixen's Whisper emblem acquired.

Nice! This ladies-only emblem is given simply for persuading one human male and is a requirement for the Witch class. There is a men-only equivalent! It's kind of sad.

A very real hazard of persuading enemies is that it can make your side a huge crowded mess.

This poor soldier doesn't have any idea what he's doing.

Book of Initiation emblem acquired.

Lots of archers + lots of rain means Deneb getting three dodges in a row is cake. This mission is pretty much Emblem Central.

Our main threat here is, surprisingly, not Grimal. His hits hurt, but he's also easy to distract with Ivanna and Mercury. Mr. Wizard's a bit more annoying.

Anyway, Glycinia's close enough now to accomplish her mission.

wait a minute you aren't authorized to be here

Acquired buried Dragon Gem Sword.

ANYWAY, the second big buried treasure is coincidentally also a dragon item. We now have a Dragon Shield, a Dragon Gem (from Glycinia), and a Dragon Gem Sword. There's a staircase off to the left, so you don't need a flying unit to get up here, but wings do make it much easier.

Things are also becoming less of a huge mess downstairs. Both those archers are almost dead.

Or, one is. Enemies shouldn't be allowed to have healers!

Mercury and Kamui head over to deal with that.

Hold on, something weird's coming up on radar...

Uh

Well, that was weird! Anyway, it stopped raining as hard, some people shuffled around, and Samus is dead, but we're back!

I still don't like archers that much, but J. Totes is getting some great mileage out of that bow.

After all, the quickest way to neutralize healers is to make them heal themselves.

Even without the rain, this time it's Rabbi getting her initiation on.

I haven't really talked about items much. Most of them are for healing or stat-raising. There aren't any item throwers or anything like that in KoL, so magic is still your best bet, but a healing leaf is still handy in a pinch. Magic restoratives are actually extremely good, but we'll get to that.

That wizard's still dropping rocks on people. As mentioned before, AoE spells can completely ignore pesky obstacles like ninjas and your teammates.

And of course, enemies will gladly eat grass, too. I'm actually not sure if there's a limit to enemy inventories; they won't usually spam items anyway.

Glycinia's helping!

While Rabbi kneecaps that wizard.

Deneb keeps on ;-*. Unfortunately her charms aren't so effective on non-soldiers.

Finally the wizard goes down.

Mercury moves in to whack the cleric and also grab a free spell.

Emblems everywhere! This time for Kamui.

Now here, I was kind of excited because it's the perfect opportunity to show off fall damage.

But then Deneb's fanclub decided to help. Oh well!

Rabbi kneecaps the cleric to death.

And Deneb finishes the archer. Persuasion is fun, but it doesn't pay the experience bills.

So Geese decides to try his hand instead.

And gets a sword to the face for his trouble.

Thankfully J. Totes is there to pick up the slack.

If being a walking pile of armor wasn't enough of a hint, magic is the way to go against knights.

More emblems! Sniper requires 5 successful bow attacks in a row. Instead of being a requirement for Archers, it just boosts your Agility by 10. That's two levels for most of our team!

This is a silly number of soldiers.

Wait Buzz what are you doing

Buzz nooooo!

He fell with style. :smith:

Note that because he wasn't officially on the team, he still drops his enemy item and can't be revived. Not that I would anyway, sucker!

Anyway, Grimal falls that turn.

Curse you, kid...

Actual money! And a spell I'll never use, but money!

Someone already mentioned this, but stolen enemies do keep their gear and make a decent source of money early on. Welcome to the bench! We also get one other thing.
