But we're still the best dressed
AKA just keeping it warm for The Ninth Layer, aka that's a lot of parentheses and commas

From

to

Well here we are past the dog days of boxing and ready to get into the meat of the money fights again. The year in pay per view kicks off when Canelo Alvarez tries to reclaim his mantle as the next big thing in boxing by taking on a very dangerous fighter in Alfredo 'Perro' Angulo. Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley got the wins they needed to set up one of the biggest rematches in years. Marcos Maidana stopped the Adrien Broner hype train and is set for a massive payday-albeit in a likely futile effort-against the one of the only two real cash cows left in the sport (the other being Manny), Floyd Mayweather. Continuing the theme of redemption, Miguel Cotto bounced back from losses to Mayweather and Austin Trout by hooking up with Freddie Roach and crushing Delvin Rodriguez and was rewarded with Sergio Martinez in Madison Square Garden. But not the same Sergio Martinez who once destroyed Paul Williams with one punch. The one who robbed Martin Murray in Argentina and has been dealing with injury and ducking Gennady Golovkin. With Golden Boy and Top Rank Promotions having isolated their fighters onto the Showtime or HBO banner, the truly intriguing (Pacquiao/Mayweather, Garcia/ Bradley, Miguel Cotto/Canelo) matchups remain temporarily out of reach but business carries on.

But perhaps even more interesting than the known is talking about the unknown. Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. bounced back from a hellacious, totally self-inflicted, 18 months to defeat hard-charging but clearly over matched Brian Vera. This opens up the door for all sorts of possibilities at 160 (lol) through 175 but each potential opponent has their own unique hurdle. Carl Froch will rematch George Groves May 31st and needs to win big to be a draw outside of the UK. Gennady Golovkin pulled out of an April 26th bout with Andy Lee following the sudden death of his father and, regardless, is more likely to be fighting next in Monte Carlo than Las Vegas due to the paucity of big name takers. Andre Ward tied up Edwin Rodriguez last November in his comeback after a 14 month layoff due to shoulder surgery but the consensus pound for pound number 2 fighter might have to be content humbling brave newcomers while waiting for JCC Jr/Froch /Golovkin or perhaps one of the emerging light heavyweights to get another signature fight. Lower on the weight scale but dealing with similar problems is Guillermo Rigondeaux. The two time Cuban Gold medalist boxed circles around Nonito Donaire and was forced to wait until December to do the same to Joseph Agbeko. With less than fan friendly styles Ward and Rigondeaux are two fighters who have the reverence of those who post on boxing scene and bad left hook comments but-by design-lack the go the war style which has made favorites out of Ruslan Provodnikov, Lucas Matthyse and Mike Alvardo among others.

One division which used to have this problem was the light heavyweight division where Jean Pascal, Chad Dawson and Bernard Hopkins engaged in a series of bouts more amusing for the press conferences than the fights. All of that changed when Adonis Stevenson knocked Chad Dawson out with one punch in Montreal in June and has been no less impressive wiping out Tavoris Cloud and Tony Bellew since. In the same time frame Sergey Kovalev annihilated Nathan Cleverly in Wales and did the same to Ismail Silakh on the under card of Stevenson-Bellew. Both being HBO fighters seems to make a clash inevitable but things have a funny way of working themselves out. On the other side of the coin B-Hop remains B-Hop and is amazingly a champion at 48 albeit known much more for excitement outside the ring than inside.

Of course the money division was once the heavyweights but that has not been the case in a long time. Vitaly Klitschko has stepped away from boxing to lead the opposition (government?) in Ukraine. Whatever you may think of his style his courage is nothing short of awe-inspring. Godspeed, Dr. Iron Fist. His brother Wlad continues fighting dudes in Germany because no one really gives a poo poo in America. He’s also engaged to Hayden Panettiere which really surprises people who didn't know that before.

Canelo-Angulo is playing in movie theaters if you can't/don't want to find a bar. It's like $15 but totally worth it to watch the entire card on a huge screen.

This is what i did for canelo-Floyd. To anyone wondering about this I would highly recommend it to shelling out the money for the ppv at home or :files: Most of the energy was coming from the Canelo supporters (other than some guy yelling "lets go money team!" in between rounds) so even if Angulo isn't a big draw per se the atmosphere should be live.

It's pretty disappointing that only Golden Boy does these events and really goes to show how dependent Showtime as a centerpiece of its programming whereas boxing is really ancillary to hbo's lineup.

Just came back from the theater (which had like less than a dozen people :( ) and the stoppage was really just kind of sad. Sad for Angulo because he had the opportunity of a lifetime and was completely lifeless and unprepared. Sad for Canelo because history won't remember him putting on a total clinic but only that he "robbed" Angulo. Sad for Tony Weeks because he made a-in my opinion-justifiable stoppage and is now the most hated man in the sport. And finally sad for boxing because it's just more fuel for the "your sport is dying because of this poo poo" fire.

I'll try to make it a goal to update the schedule every week obviously removing events that have happened and new events that have been announced. Obviously the most prominent is Juan Manuel Marquez vs Mike Alvarado May 17th at the Forum in Inglewood-mainly known for being where the Lakers played like a billion years ago. Winner fights the winners of Pacquiao-Bradley so it's a mini tournament of sorts which is kinda cool. Ruslan Provodnikov is going to probably fight Antonio DeMarco next which is all kinds of  and obviously he needs to jump poo poo to Golden Boy and go up against Matthyse.

In other news this weekend is headlined by Danny Garcia vs Mauricio Herrea in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on Showtime in a pretty blatant attempt to crown Garcia the next great champion of Puerto Rico after Miguel Cotto. Herrera is the only man other than Bradley to beat Provodnikov-and even that was pretty debatable-but whatever. The undercard is actually pretty decent for a non PPV with Juanma against Daniel Ponce De Leon with the winner probably getting a crack at the winner of the Jhonny Gonzalez-Abner Mares rematch or even Leo Santa Cruz is the whole thing with Carl Frampton falls apart. Also Deontay Wilder is fighting Malik Scott and he'll probably get a super cool knockout.

Also, Canelo vs Angulo ended up doing 350k buys which beat all expectations considering it was Canelo's first time headlining a PPV, with a undercard that was poor on paper and even worse after it happened no less.

Well Junior may be lazy and entitled but I don't really think you can consider him someone who really avoids opponents for too long. He probably could have side stepped Sergio for a few more fights and run the gauntlet of Macklin/Geale/Sturm, etc. Whether money or pride or both the bout was made without too much difficulty. He was actually winning a lot people-including myself-back when he made weight against Vera and fought a good fight but his 12th round antics pretty much ruined all of that. Big props if he's actually willing to step in against GGG but a part of me thinks maybe he wants it now because he thinks Golovkin will be ripe for the picking coming back from his father's death.

Also nothing televised going on this weekend except Vanes Martirosyan trying to bounce back against that loss to Andrade tonight at 9/8 on ESPN2 when he takes on Mario Lozano. He should do it. Pretty sparse action until the 12th with Pac/Bradley 2

Most recent news is that the undercard of Mayweather-Maidana is shaping with Amir Khan against Luis Collazo and Adrien Broner vs (NON-sex offender) Carlos Molina which actually makes sense since Khan-Broner right now by itself is probably big enough that it could almost be a fringe PPV and if they both win it should be a bit more than that.

Also, Adonis Stevenson-Andrzej Fonfara has been moved to Showtime thanks to Al Haymon basically. Rumor has it that HBO would only give the Stevenson camp what they wanted if they agreed to fight Kovalev (no disrespect to Cedric Agnew and Fonfara but come on now) later in the year. Losing the slim possiblity of Stevenson-Kovalev to Stevenson-Hopkins makes me feel I don't know what.

Lara's been trying to punk Canelo-and generally looking worse for it-a while now so it makes sense. Canelo can put 350K buys against a fighter coming off a loss and a ho-hum undercard. Meanwhile Lara is stuck fighting Ishe Smith on Fox Sports 1 the night before Mayweather-Maidana.

Definitely a great article. Between horrible judging, the network/promotion wars and so forth boxing suffers enough these days without fighters having to take dives but of course kit happens all the time to this day but it's kind of annoying to have people interpret bad judging/a bad mismatch as a fight being fixed.

Also this weekend is the return of Bhop against the "fourth light heavyweight champion" Beibut Shumenov.
Don't know too much about Shumenov -he won the belt against Campillo in 2010- and his most notable win since is I guess William Joppy. Also Shawn Porter defends his ibf belt against the Malignaggi in what has to be a star maker for Porter. Also Peter Quillin is stuck against some Czech fighter and will probably look less than impressive but still pull it before calling out Golovkin and Martinez.

Kinda makes sense since there is (supposedly was but who know) a split within Golden Boy between Oscar and Richard Schafer with Canelo being closer to Oscar and Floyd, Broner, etc. with Schafer.

A Canelo - De la Hoya promotion could conceivably get a lot of the top Hispanic fighters and open things up since hbo's problem is mostly with Al Haymon as opposed to GB promotions as a whole.

Did the theater thing again which was much more enjoyable than Canelo-Angulo since more than like a dozen people showed up and it actually felt like watching a sporting event. Even if it the social hermit in me would just rather stay and watch at home and not have to deal with people oohing and aahing everything that hits glove just because it sounds loud.

Anyways the main event was pretty fantastic at first but Maidana seemed to give enough ground that Floyd 115-113 or thereabouts seems right. As for the rematch Khan did enough to "earn" the fight but won't in September due to Ramadan and even if Maidana had gotten wiped out Floyd can just go with Danny Garcia. Nothing more compelling-other than Manny or even Bradley but welp-than a rematch so why not. Go with Garcia-Broner on the undercard in the eliminator and that's a pretty good card.

What a knockout. At this point I could be convinced that Marvin Somodio/Freddie Roach could turn me into a fighter.

So Yuri Foreman-who was supposed to fight on the undercard of Cotto/Martinez-just apparently retired. What an unfortunate journey from his fight with Cotto.

I remember him from that fight, it was the first time I had ever seen a ref disallow a corner throwing in the towel. I didn't even know that was legal. I remember it being a pretty bittersweet affair all around because he just couldn't continue anymore and had to give up the title. What happened afterwards? Injuries mainly?

He tried a comeback fight that following March against a Polish journeyman but had to retire after 3 due to the same knee injury. He fought four times in 2013 but never more than 6 rounds and either he wasn't ready or his heart just wasn't in it.
A lot the reason he became such a big draw was being an Orthodox Jew meant a very invested audience that seldom sees competitive pro fighters and he is studying at a yeshiva so there's a lot more to him than boxing which is always nice to see.

Also, Manny reupped with Top Rank until 2016 and then posted most half-assed Floyd callout ever. Meanwhile Max Kellerman senses something rotten in Denmark Juan Manuel Marquez

Maybe you should take some of Bob Arum's money and upgrade from the iphone 3 champ. I've only ever owned Android devices so I have no idea what model iphone that actually is

Anyone check out the Cotto-Martinez face off? I usually don't watch prefight hype stuff but this was pretty cool. Max got put on the spot and also had to do some quick translating.

While boxing side of the fight is really intriguing I'm having a hard time thinking that there's genuine personal animosity because cotto wants to be introduced last or because Sergio saw him act like a dick to some kids. At least a Canelo fight (who is ridiculously bland from a personality standpoint) would have the Mexico - Puerto Rico rivalry.

Cotto strikes me as a very even keel guy but he seems honest which is refreshing for a prize fighter.

There's really so many variables to Cotto-Martinez that it really is fascinating and it's definitely my most anticipated fight of year.

Adonis Stevenson is back against a guy not named Sergey Kovalev. Grantland has a great piece about his checkered past and it's worth a read for sure.

EDIT: A lot of Adonis' s early appeal was -to me at least- is that he knocked out Chad Dawson who no one seemed to really like. And then people find out he's a pimp and it's like "lol maybe he'll walk to ring with a cane and some hos". Then he starts avoiding talking about Kovalev, takes the path of least resistance by jumping to Al Haymon and Showtime and on top of that he has done awful things that are beyond the pale even for a prize fighter

Hahaha Showtime just claimed Adonis Stevenson is the only true champion at 175.

gently caress. Off.

Well he is the lineal champion which is as close as you can get to true. But considering they have the only multi-major belt champion ON THEIR OWN NETWORK makes that pretty lol.
