If Snyder wants to make money in merchandise revenue, he'd change the name to the Washington Cool Cats and the logo to a kitten wearing sunglasses and maybe playing a saxophone or something.

Yeah, but given that there obviously wasn't a crippling knockoff deluge between the 1992 cancellation and the 1999 appeal victory, can't Snyder just get an injunction or whatever it was that happened last time?

I assume so yes. I'm just saying that people saying he could just re-register the name if it's officially canceled, or register some other Redskins variant, are probably wrong.

I agree. I was wrong before; apparently PTO has denied quite a few recent Redskins applications due to the name being offensive.

Side note, this was from the '95 pro bowl, when the NFL was trying to kick off a leaguewide mascot change to try and market to kids. They then rolled out these weird new mascot costumes at the pro bowl, where they looked like garbage, and so they were mostly scrapped:

No idea what the Washington one was called.

Do what William & Mary did. Change Redskins to Skins. Keep the colors and font. Drop the Indian portrait and feathers. Everyone calls them the Skins for short anyway. William & Mary is still the Tribe, but without the feathers in the logo.

Quick scan of twitter is telling me this isn't that popular outside these walls. A lot of the phrasing is "82 years in, US GOVERNMENT patent office steals PRIVATE BUSINESSES trademark in gross abuse of FEDERAL power, orwell 1984, political correctness, Nazi's". If this lasts it's gonna be a redneck issue for decades.

Well, if the pictures here are accurate, "Horror" might have been a good name for the Washington one, or any others.

The Saints' mascot being called "Big Daddy" reminds me of "Chief Wiggum, P.I.", so that's cool.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the Redskins *name* is terrible and should be gone, but the current logo itself is completely inoffensive.

And the username is based on a silly nickname my friends and I had for Peyton Hillis, who is pretty much only notable for being white and getting on the Madden cover for one good season.

Edited out stuff because picking a fight over this is dumb and terrible.

A Tribe Called Red member Ian Campeau has been accused of being racist by Westfest festival goers after sporting a “Caucasian” t-shirt mocking the Cleveland Indians.

A Tribe Called Red is set to play Ottawa’s Westfest this upcoming weekend, but when Iam Campeau was seen wearing the ironic Cleveland “Caucasians” t-shirt, he became the target of some of the festival attendees. The festival organizers have been getting emails and voicemails of festival goers threatening to boycott the festival. “Deejay NDN” (Campeau) posted a photo of the email to his Instagram account.

Reading some of the comments in newspapers articles about this sorta astounds me. I don't understand why people can't see a problem with the name 'Redskins', why can't you understand that this is very offensive to a race of people.

Walk into a crowded bar on the res as a caucasian, or a traditional pow-wow, and say "Whats up redskins?". You are going to get your rear end kicked simple as that. Just like if you walked into a bar on Michigan avenue in Detroit and said "Whats up niggers?". Its because people take those names as deeply racially offensive.

Chiefs I can get being offensive too, that brings up stereotypes, just like if you had a team called jungle warriors and your mascot was a dude in blackface with a spear.

I can see however people not necessarily minding the name blackhawks and native americans being proud of that in some instances, as that I believe is referring to the indians that fought in the black hawk war and as a symbol of resistance. I can also see how the native americans don't seem to take offense (at least that I know of, and I am native american) at army helicopters being named after tribes such as the Apache or Comanche as those names seem to invoke pride.

I would say that the word Chief does not specifically apply to Native Americans so as long as they don't have fans running around in headdresses going "me want scalp big head" or some poo poo then it is fine. Redskin is a straight up slur though, end of story.

Most white people will never go to a reservation, and most know very few (if any) people who identify as Native American. It's easy to rationalize the repression of a group whom you never see and have no power over you.

Kinda makes me curious what percentage of people have gone to reservation casinos. The local ones have tons and tons of shows that even non-gamblers go to. Granted, the casino end of the reservations generally have no bearing on the utter slums that some of them unfortunately are
