I got into a debate with a friend tonight. I believe that in order for it to be a snuff film, it needs to be a video of someone (who was probably kidnapped or duped) being murdered on film for the explicit purpose of creating a 'snuff film' that will be distributed in very select, discriminating circles. He thinks that any murder caught on film is a snuff film, regardless of the motivation. Thoughts?

You were right OP. In fact the snuff film was prefigured by Cubist-era poet Guillame Apollinaire's 1905 short story "Un Beau Film," in which wealthy debauchees kidnap a couple and force another man to kill them for no other reason than to film it. I would argue that the existence of any motive for the killing other than to be sold and viewed disqualifies the subject as a snuff film (political killings and unrelated events only recorded by happenstance therefore being disqualified). Mexican cartel killings are way cooler than Islamic terrorist ones anyway. There's a great post in CineD that really gets to the heart of the subtle satire that's easily missed at the heart of the best cartel murder videos. Really many of them are more "commentaries" on the form even as they are examples of it
