In trading Spezza for a 3rd line winger and a pair of C-level prospects that top out as 3rd line wingers (but are just as likely career AHLers), Ottawa dumped 3M in salary and 6M in cap space. Murray may be a thoroughly mediocre GM but this move still reeks of Melnyk. Right now they're below the cap floor with 13 forwards, 8 defensemen and 1 goalie on contracts. Lehner is going to get an extension with a 2M cap hit, and Murray will send Ceci to the minors because he's the only defenseman on a 2-way contract and Murray was stupid enough to give Borowiecki a 1-way contract because he's from Smiths Falls and hits people and fights people and has HEART and GRIT. e: On any other team, signing an AHL defenseman to a 1-way for $600k wouldn't be a problem, but in Ottawa a 1-way means you won't be playing in the AHL. They could sign/trade for a forward or defenseman, but Melnyk's divorce settlement isn't going to pay for itself. Ottawa will be a cap floor team and be one Karlsson injury away from McDavid.
