I wanted to do a quick derail since this is actually semi on topic. Last Thursday was the Austin Werk Fashion show featuring some previous Project Runway alum and it was a blast. From what I gather from this season's PR and the fashion show it's all about the fringe. FRINGE!

Daniel Esquivel, Ari South, Richard Hallmarq, and Christopher Palu were all designers that presented. Richard's was a lot of black jersey items, Ari's was a lot of color and textures, Christopher had a lot of fun pieces, and Daniel had some really great graphic prints as well as some crazy fringe textile he made that looked like scales when it moved. All in all, it was a blast and it was a lot fun seeing these designers in their element.

Back on topic, Sandhya just completely ignored any and all criticism and did something that looked horrid and I'm glad she got called on it. I couldn't help but think the poor child was going to be forced into doing a salsa dance.

This was so stupid. Of course no one is going to speak up in front of everyone and say, no, she can't have more time and the model has to go out as is. They could have kept her modesty by placing a scrap of muslin along her side before she walked. How did this happen?!?

In other news...
Holy poo poo the make-up was awful! I know the point was to highlight the make-up but NO WOMAN WANTS TO LOOK LIKE A CLOWN!

Top
Winner
Korina

I like the skirt, the look has good proportions, its inoffensive overall. Now, the blue eyeshadow on this skin tone is a crime against cosmetology.

Kini

Jacket yes, skirt no. The skirt done in denim makes her look thicker than she really is.

Emily

Ole!

The Middle
Amanda

Too short / bad proportions. Having the chevrons point up on the bottom only serves to exaggerate the problem.

Bottom
Char

A TOMATO RED ROMPER?!? Everything else aside, the fact that she decided to make a bright red romper for a grown rear end woman is ridiculous.

Sean

This girl was a produced by producers. She just happens to be a model / singer getting her first credit with this.
This was an awful dress. If Char's bullshit didn't occur, this should have gone home.

The shape does nothing for her. I thought the model was pretty but now all I can think of is Hatchet Face from Cry Baby. Hate the shoes.

The make up is definitely horrible this season. It doesn't even look like it has a lot of pigment to it or that it applies well when they show them putting it on. The make up artists have had the crack pipe passed to them.

This is why wearing retro styled clothing should be a privilege, not a right. Not everyone looks good in that style. That outfit looks like a bad cheerleader uniform and the shoes should be incinerated. The hair isn't much better, either.

The thing is, she would look good in a retro style if Alexander had known how to make something look retro. But you're right, it does look like a bad cheer uniform and terrible shoe choice. I don't think Alexander understands the style of retro that girls like his model want to wear. He should have gone for more of the style of Pinup Girl Clothing but with his own twist on it.

Save this lovely season

so i wrote the above before the instachallenge twist and seriously how many chances does Char need to blow before they just let her go home

I'm not saying that Char didn't nail the instachallenge but Korina honestly deserves better

With that said, easily the least dignified exit in recent memory

I don't know how much of this episode was just clever editing but before this one aired I was middle of the road as far as Korina goes. After her hissy fit while doing the second challenge I was glad to see her go and I felt bad for Emily because she had to just sit there and listen to it. While the judges might not have the most popular opinion it probably isn't a good idea to talk sass to Nina Garcia.

This episode was when I realized there's nobody I particularly want to see in the final 3. Emily's a nice person but her aesthetic is Etsy garbage. All Kini does is churn out origami dresses. Sean never has taste issues or construction issues but I can remember literally zero of his designs so far. Char sucks, honestly. I didn't want that to be true but all she does is mall clothes and she's always flummoxed by the limitations imposed by the show. And even if I didn't hate loving whatserface the pantomime queen with every cell of my brain I can spare to care about reality tv show personalities, her work is all over the place and she has godawful taste.

Come on producers, let the judges vote "none of the above." It's Never Before Seen In Project Runway History!

After the Tim Gunn save, 10 extra minutes to save a garment before runway, being carried by her teammates, and getting a showdown instead of an entirely-deserved auf, and then the challenge is having one loving hour to turn disparate scraps into a cohesive look AND you get a partner? Can you really blame Korina for breaking down? Don't get me wrong; she flamed out hard, but I get where she's coming from. How many sets of training wheels does one designer need?

Yeah, this is exactly where I'm at - it's bonkers how much help she's getting to fart around at the bottom of the pack.

Still, the Korina implosion was hilarious and I loved it - personal favorite was saying "This isn't about you" to Char at the end in the fakest way possible. You could tell from the lounge when everyone but Sean was completely freezing her out that if anything else the talking head parts/nasty editing understated what was going on there. I don't know if anyone else has flamed out that hard besides like, Sandro or w/e.

I can't wait for next week.

These are two completely different things though. It's absolutely understandable that Korina was pissed off. It's the way she handled the situation that was completely wrong.

I cackled when Korina was sitting there, talking about how much of a strong designer she is, considering she made those two ugly forest green dresses she wouldn't budge on a few weeks ago. Sure, Korina got screwed over by the producers, but the amount of vitriol she was spewing at Char was really tacky. Not sad to see her and her hipster tattoos go.

That said, Char should have been eliminated on that outfit she made for the teacher. I don't care that the producers want a Tim Gunn save make it to Fashion Week, she should have been gone. Sure, she comes across as nice, but making mall outfit after mall outfit is not cutting it.

Maybe it's me but I believed her saying it wasn't about Char. I think it was more she realized she got screwed over by the producers who had to let char move forward and there was no way for her to get out of there and still be a candidate. Sure she was complaining about char getting the extra chances but I kind of side with her on that in principle. Her delivery was unfortunate and she dug her own grave. it was hilarious to watch.

This is actually one thing I don't like about project runway.

If someone (and this has happened multiple seasons) wins and everyone disagrees, some people will just start taking it out on the winner. No one can control what the judges say or who the judges choose, and it just seems really petty to take it out on the designer.

In this case I guess it has more to do with the Tim Gunn save, but it's not all that different.

Just wondering, everyone saying the producers want to carry Char as far as possible, is it basically so that Tim Gunn doesn't look bad having chosen someone who just flunks out the next challenge? I like Tim, but it sucks that Char could make it to the end just to make sure Tim doesn't lose face for making the wrong decision.

If direct manipulation by a star of a show doesn't give you a direct shot at actually winning then it's pointless to have a "save" at all. Since Runway doesn't have a live voting element there's nothing stopping them from having whomever gets the save competing in the finale, especially since they instituted 4-designer finales some years ago. Given that the Tim Gunn Save's first recipient made it to the finale last season, they probably all will going forward. With that said, the idea behind the save was that the judges make poor choices sometimes and it's up to Tim to make things right once per season, immediately following the runway show when he sends them to the workroom to pack up their poo poo, so having it seem like an afterthought this season for a designer as under the radar as Charketa seems bonkers.

Basically, the existence of the Tim Gunn Save (and PR All Stars) is because Gretchen won over Mondo. I'm pretty sure you can track the sharp decline of PR to that exact moment.

Oh god, Gretchen.

The only good part with her was when Tim railed on her teammates, and her by proxy, during that group challenge. She was awful.

And to continue with that, mondo had to win the all stars season he was on to right that wrong. It was a given from the start that it would have that outcome.

This summer I subletted with a friend and learned she supported Gretchen over Mondo, along with loving Sandhya this season and thinking Daniel Vosevic was more of a villain than Santino in season 2. I still kinda think she's just trolling me.

I think the sharp decline happened when Project Runway left Bravo - I like Irina as a winner and Althea/Carol Hannah but otherwise 6 was a pretty weak season.

I'll have to look further but did the move to lifetime also change production companies? I think it did. Once Bunim-Murray was leading it instead of the original one (magical elves or whatever it was?), it definitely was more personalities and drama over talent and interesting challenges. And time. I wonder how different the same seasons would be if the designers had more than "one day" to complete things.

She has to be trolling you. Daniel Vosevic was ROBBED and should have won season 2. gently caress Chloe. That was my very first "what flavor of crack are these judges smoking?' moment and for me it's been a love/hate relationship ever since (mostly hate). I still can't stop watching though.

http://tomandlorenzo.com/2014/10/project-runway-storage-whores/

re the second looks:

quote:

This (Korina's) is anger in the form of a dress.

quote:

Char’s entry was extremely basic from a design point of view, but thanks to the help of Sean, it’s pretty much impeccably rendered. So Char gets to stay because she had an assistant who could sew really fast. Design had nothing to do with it.

and in summary:

quote:

But let’s face it: they wanted to provoke a Mean Girl meltdown and they wanted to ensure that Tim Gunn’s save wasn’t a waste. This was all bullshit from top to bottom.

I'm sorry, I just can't agree with TLo on this. Korina's second dress looked like poo poo, Char's didn't. It's that simple. The way they got to that point might have been controversial, but the decision AFTER the second look really wasn't. If you've got an hour, there's only so much you can do. Char wasn't dumb about it, Korina was.

I think they were both dumb about. Char chose the far better fabric. Korina had a better idea but botched the execution. That being said, Sean won it for char. Char didn't win it. He edited her design and did the sewing heavy lifting. I would have preferred they get no help or input and then duke it out. But korina dug her grave on this one. I still don't think they should have gotten to this point but whatever. Korina did herself in with the choices but I definitely think the heavy hand of the producers had the majority impact on this. And I am saying that as someone who couldn't stand Korina from the start.
