vlc is cool bc it plays a lot of stuff that quicktime doesn't play in other news my basement has flooded resulting in thousands of dollars in damage of both forgotten useless stuff and irreplaceable forgotten art

Video Decoding Acceleration (VDA) comes with MacOS X.6.3 and later (see API). This is somewhat supported in VLC 2.1.0. Only H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) is supported currently.
