Venric Mark news: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/jeremy-fowler/24668099/nwestern-transfer-venric-mark-exploring-texas-tech-fcs-schools Says that his two options seem to be to attempt to walk-on at TTU and apply for a waiver or to transfer to a DII school. The waiver at TTU is only a possibility because his mother lives in Lubbock. He's one class short of graduating, otherwise he'd be able to transfer anywhere. He would be an instant impact player at TTU as a punt return specialist. We're trying out 3 true freshmen and 1 walk on senior receiver right now for that spot. Don't think he'll crack the RB rotation considering that he will be arriving on campus in the last week of fall camp. He'd probably play RB at a DII school like West Texas A&M. That'd be an instant start type of situation, even with limited camp time.

Doesn't help that Carlsbad and Eastern New Mexico are pretty crappy places too. You can draw a line from Amarillo to Lubbock to Big Spring to San Angelo to Junction. West of that and east/north of the mountains is horribly ugly. Minus Monahans. Monahans was kinda cool. At least on the Texas side, you can go 80+mph without fear of being ticketed.

I was supremely disappointed when I found that their team was not "the frogs". And to make it college related, here's the Texas Tech's Jones AT&T stadium as it was a few winters ago. The news org probably got things a little confused. A&M's playbook, if it's in the style of the Leach Air Raids, is a collection of routes and protections that really wind up combining into just a wide a selection as an NFL playbook. You call one of 6 formations, each receiver gets a route, the RB's get their assignments. The QB can make reads at the line change things up, pick a run/pass, whatever. So yeah, they don't really have a playbook, just a set of routes and formations.

computer parts posted:The SEC East at least has been pretty anemic as of late. The SEC is a conference of disparity. The top of the conference should be expected to be in the championship game or near it each year. The rest of the conference is middling and the bottom of the conference is going to struggle with MAC teams, just like the other conferences. I'd say there's much more parity in the Big XII and the Pac 12 than the SEC. Hell, in 2012, 9 of the Big XII's 10 teams made bowl games. That's pretty good.

Thoguh posted:I still think the Big XII was the best conference in the country in 2011/2012. But it was really down last year. Not sure yet how this year will shake out but I don't see it peaking again this season. Last year was a pretty bad year for the conference. Only one team had a stable QB situation. OSU, UT, OU, TTU, KSU, the traditional top half of the conference all had absolute messes at QB. WVU and TCU had horrible QB situations too. So Baylor was the only team with a stable QB situation, bringing up a veteran backup, and they were far and away the class of the Big XII. TTU, KSU, OU, and WVU should be in much better shape this year as far as QBs go. OSU is still a question, and UT is starting a walking concussion.

Errr, Sonny Dykes came over from Louisiana Tech. Before that he was OC at Arizona and got his start at TTU as an OC under Mike Leach. He runs a version of the Air Raid, and they had a rough time of the transitional year, especially since that defense is bad bad bad. They were a 3-9 team in Tedford's last year, graduated a bunch of contributors, and then struggled to put up points or stop anyone on defense.

e: ^^^ I hope he works out for you. Good kid, just unfortunate timing for a wake boarding injury got him passed up on our depth chart. Some info on SHSU vs EWU: Georgia Southern hired away former Bearkat coach Willie Fritz during the offseason. Fritz ran a read-option based offense that was fairly unique to college football. SHSU had been to the national championship 2 straight years before last year's down season where they were knocked out in a heartbreaker to SELU. The new coach is K.C. Keeler who had an up and down tenure at Delaware previously. He won a national championship and went to two others with the Blue Hens, but spent the intervening years having really poor records. SHSU is a bit of an unknown this year under the new coach. I'm not sure if he'll run the same or a similar offense, so there could very well be a bit of a step back. They have a rep for playing a brutal schedule. A few years ago they had A&M and Baylor and they very nearly knocked off both. This year they play LSU. Next year they play TTU. EWU, on the other hand, is the high flyingest of high flying offenses. They throw the ball all over the place and are coming off of two straight semifinal appearances and a national title in 2010. Both of these schools could take on about half of the FBS and give some top 30 teams a run for their money. I fully expect SHSU to upset Central Arkansas later this season if Keel isn't a complete flop. Should be a good game. e2: To avoid double posting, Venric Mark has found himself at NCAA D-II school West Texas A&M. They've been amassing some decent talent, might be poised to make a run at Grand Valley State this year. kayakyakr fucked around with this message at 18:12 on Aug 23, 2014 |

Speaking of bowls: I'm a bit of a bowl junkie. Have "season" tickets to my local bowl (Alamo). Have been to most of the local bowl games and a few big ones out of state (Holiday, Rose). I'm going to be in Orlando from the 24th of December to the 1st. Sadly, will be flying out on the 1st, so no chance of going to the Capitol One Bowl, but there's a good shot that the Russell Athletic bowl will be scheduled for the 28th of December (the date is currently TBD, but that's where it was last year), and the Big XII now has a bowl tie in there. What should I know about trying to go to that bowl game?

Grittybeard posted:Huh, I wonder how things like this happen? You're a pretty good linebacker, but once you start coaching it's offense all the way. Sumlin's never held a position coaching defense other than as a head coach. TTU's Safety's coach is "Big Play" Trey Haverty. He was a WR during Kingsbury's tenure. He coached at TCU for a few years and they wound up flipping him from WR to safety's coach. Where you play doesn't necessarily mean you can't learn the other side of the ball.

DJExile posted:In a little fairness to GSU, they did show a little improvement in later games last year, and they've gone from FCS independents to CAA to Sun Belt in 3 years, which would be a tough transition for a lot of programs, never mind one that's only a few years old. Trent Miles is a good recruiter and is finally getting some of his own kids onto a team that used to be entirely JUCO players and walk-ons. To add some more intrigue to this game, Abeline Christian was a D-II program up until last year. Last year was their first year competing in D-I. So this is about the lowest end of FBS that you can get (well, UTSA started playing football 3 years ago, but they're close) vs the lowest end of FCS you can get.
