From Adam Wingard, director of last year's excellent You're Next and the V/H/S films comes:

I just got back from seeing a preview of this and I had the time of my life. It's preposterously fun, with an increasingly ludicrous amount of violence dished out by the titular Guest: a mysterious (and astonishingly violent) special forces sociopath played by Dan Stevens:

No wait wrong character.

That's better.

At the core of the film is a satire on Chris Evan's Captain America. Stevens plays up the same aw shucks bashfulness, except while Captain America is the ideal of American militarism, The Guest is the reality: a monstrous psychopath that destroys everything it touches and laughs. Don't think I'm reaching in my analysis here either, the film lays on the comparisons pretty thick - especially when Lance Reddick (Lt Daniels in The Wire) shows up to play a bald black-ops special forces leader who marches around in a knee-length black leather coat. The only thing he's missing is an eyepatch.

This feels destined to become a cult classic, one that people will be kicking themselves down the line for not catching it in cinemas.

I've popped up a full review here: http://www.londoncitynights.com/2014/08/the-guest-2014-directed-by-adam-wingard.html

Here's a trailer edited by the director of Hobo With a Shotgun:

Oh, and did I mention that this has an absolutely kickin' soundtrack poached from Hotline Miami. F.O.O.L., Powerglove and Perturbator all feature (and often). This song is played in full for example:

It's out in the UK 5th September and the US on the 17th.

Spring break forever
This has been my most-hyped movie ever since axleblaze started gushing about it and compared it to Killer Joe by way of Drive. It doesn't hurt that I loved You're Next, the idea of a movie along those lines in an action context instead of a horror one is so far up my alley it's ridiculous.

That was pretty intense, huh?

I've only ever seen Dan Stevens in Downton Abbey so that trailer pretty much blew me the gently caress away. :stare: I hope this ends up on VOD or something so I can watch it ASAP.

I was actually hesitant to link that trailer as I don't think it represents the film particularly well.

It's much better (and weirder) than that trailer makes it look.

edit: this teaser is a bit closer in tone:

Aw man, I wanted to be the one to make this thread :(

Aw well. Yes, this movie owns alot. Here's what I wrote in after Sundance:

The Guest A+
I think all I really need to say about this movie is there's a scene where a character puts on music to try to mask the sound of what she's doing, in the CD she puts on just happens to play 80s synth background music that goes with the scene. The scene doesn't draw attention to this fact and doesn't make it a punchline or anything. It's just sort of something that happens.

God this movie ruled. I haven't had this much fun at a movie since Hobo With a Shotgun. It's hard to really describe this movie. It's like those movies where a someone stays with a suburban family and helps them with all their problems but mixed with Hobo with a Shotgun, Killer Joe and a truckload of 80s. There's just rarely a moment in this movie where I wasn't grinning ear to ear. Just everything about it is awesomely silly without really going into that area where it's kind of being smug and self aware. This is almost a Tarantino movie in how joyfully it pulls from as many movies as possible to create it's own thing that just works.

Just see this movie.

This came out in the UK this week. I thought You're Next was overrated but The Guest is pure entertainment. It's a really fun mash-up of genres (the final bit in particular is an affectionate nod towards horror movie conventions). Dan Stevens absolutely owns the titular role. Lots of really fun and memorable scenes too.

I had great fun at this today and thought 'That Captain America is a dick' right from the bar scene. Doesn't hinder that I got the actors confused of course.

I'm sure I saw a quick cameo from one of the masks from You're Next as well at the Halloween party.

Saw this yesterday and absolutely loved it. The only shame was that there were only three other people in the theater with me. And yes the soundtrack absolutely owned. There's a soundtrack to download on Amazon but it's not complete because I know that this isn't on the soundtrack but it was played (perfectly) towards the end of the movie. I don't know how many other songs might be missing from that soundtrack but it's a start.

Edit: probably should have linked to that soundtrack on Amazon

Did anyone else get the idea that "David" was actually the dead son, Caleb? I know it was never spelled out word-for-word, but it would explain how he knew everything about the family, if he wasn't actually David to begin with.

I thought so at one point. But he does actually show up in the photo at the start. If it wasn't for that then theory could've worked. I thought that more would be made of the son since Daniels from The Wire reacts when he hears Caleb's name. Unless the idea was that Caleb was in the same program.

I figured the implication was that the son died in the same supersoldier program, possibly when David burned down the hospital..

Exactly. And because of that he would have gotten that pastic surgeon to change him to look like a person he would know would be in the photograph.

I think that's a bit far-fetched. The story makes much more sense if David is treated as a surrogate son than if he's their actual son masquerading as someone else. Anyway, they'd have told us if he was Caleb.

I agree. With all the talk of the plastic surgeon as well I thought it would reveal that but it would be a step too far. As it is the movie just sketches in enough for you to know what happens. The implication is that they were in the same program, and David is the one to get out alive. He specifically mentions when he's on the phone that he wants it fixed so he'll appear (Through fingerprinting etc) to be someone else, not that he's already had that procedure done.

Well it could get some crazy word of mouth thing going and open in more theaters but thats pretty unlikely (it woudl be awesome so go see it and talk about it). The film wasnt made to appeal to everyone on the planet. I dont think anything worthwhile and good is.

It's a 90 minute action film with a handsome star, a poppy soundtrack and a snappy script. It's hardly Terence Malick!

It sounds interesting, especially the talk of him being what a real-life Captain America/super-soldier might turn out like. But is the movie more of an action/crime/thriller with a somewhat unhinged, violent antihero (like Drive), or does it take a horror movie turn and he ends up tormenting the family? You can put it in spoiler tags, but that will probably make a difference as to whether or not I see it.

It's more of a wacky 80s action thriller with hints of horror. It's just sort of ridiculous.

It's like those movies where a person stays with a family and solves all their problems, but the person that does this is a violent psychopath. In a way it's a much more fun, much less disturbing Visitor Q is that has any meaning to you.

Thank you. I don't like Miike -- hated Ichi the Killer, so I never saw Visitor Q, but that helps. I just don't like horror movies and thrillers that are just innocent people being brutalized, but if this guy is taking out people who deserve it or are worse than he is, then I'm cool with it.

I don't understand, is this guy an actual super-powered person or is anachronistic in some fashion, or is he just another kill specialist with weird PTSD issues and an amoral but honorable(sociopathic?) streak?

Why the comparisons of the character to captain america?

The trailer in general does not give a good feel for the movie. Like, for instance, none of the trailers feature a single 80s synth despite the fact that the movie's score doesn't feature a single thing that isn't an 80s synth.

Just got back from seeing this, was hoping for a thread. Really entertaining, exciting stuff. Story was a bit odd but really it's not one of those films where that's super important. A lot funnier than I was expecting as well, it got a lot of laughs from some of David's more psycho lines.

But not what I was expecting at all from the trailer I saw. Started off that way and then the military experiment bits arrived and it went completely off the rails. In a good way.

Also (spoilers for the end) all the haunted house bits were amazing. Almost got too silly but somehow it held on. "Quick, out the back entrance which is a hall of mirrors!" Mr. Military Police was great, but he was even better there. And I think my reaction to the end was similar to the main character's. After they said they only found two bodies I was on edge wondering where he was.

This is a shame that they are trying to pass it off as a generic action movie. I was ready to not see this movie from only viewing the trailer but hearing about the synth score and what it is really about has me very interested now.
