Can I ask a question?

I like Szechuan dishes. When I order them, I pronounce it "Shesh-wan" is that even close to what I should be saying? I guess I kinda put a really soft (eh) in there like "Shesh-(eh)wan", but it's barely distinguishable.

Is that anyway near right? DOes literally anyone on earth know this?
it's two syllables and the fitrst one sounds like a sneering Australian saying "sir" and the second is pretty much just "chwan," try to think of someone saying "don't you wanna" fast and pick out that middle part

e: sorry that my explanation is obtuse but it's really hard to find analogues :qq:

Why is it anglicized as 'Sz' then rather than 'Sr'
i have no idea. the alternate way of spelling it is Sichuan. it's like some Hungarian came in to spell it for us or something

and no there's no real "r" sound in it

e: yeah sorry for the confusion I said that because the "i" in sichuan sounds like the "i" in the way australians say sir. I couldn't really think of any other examples of that sound in english

Serious reply: A lot of those places were run by first gen immigrants who rode the boat over in the 60s and have now retired and sold it to the viets coming over now to run. Viets are literally ruining "chinese" food
hmm is it ironic that the last vietnamese restaurant i went to was totally chinese owned & operated then?

I don't think I have ever met somebody in my entire life that does not like Chinese people. It must be a white thing, because Blacks, Latinos, and Asians do not shy away from Chinese places even a tad bit. American Koreans are kind of racist though.
a lot of Southeast Asians will eat Chinese food and enjoy Chinese stuff (because it's everywhere in Asia) but resent/dislike Chinese people for a few reasons.

In a lot of countries, like Indonesia, the Phillippines, Vietnam to some extent, and a bunch of others, there is a heavy historical Chinese influence and Chinese people own a lot of the businesses, financial institutions, and have a heavy presence in the media.

Chinese immigrant communities also tend to be very insular, helping fellow Chinese business owners and workers a lot but shutting out others.

This, combined with often poor treatment of workers of non-Chinese descent by Chinese business owners and other people (hiring natives as, say, maids or whatever), as well as the perceived appropriation of local culture by Chinese people, leads to a lot of resentment and anger towards Chinese people in general. Actually, the anti-Chinese sentiment in these areas seems, to me, similar to anti-Semitism. In some countries it's really bad. In Indonesia, for example, there's what is essentially a government-sponsored mob which commonly extorts and kills (well, "disappears") Chinese business owners.

that's about it, but one of the things is that chinese migrants have somewhat more power than jews ever did because they didn't get the full brunt of state oppression (for example, they provided a ridiculous sum of money to the KMT and communists in the second world war) so it's more complicated than a lot of anglo/euro ethnic relationships
yeah true

filipinos are funny because they're like the opposite of chinese in some respects, once they realize you're filipino they want you to help them in some way rather than offering you help.
for example if you go to a Chinese restaurant and are Chinese occasionally they'll just be like "you don't have to pay, it's cool" whereas if you go into a store and the owner's Filipino and you are too, they'll expect you to buy a lot of stuff but not give you a discount or anything.
