The Ravens are the national game on Thursday night this week. I think the NFL probably regrets this scheduling decision!!!
Haha, seriously. I mean, especially if Baltimore doesn't cut Rice (they will) the NFL will definitely pile something more on but Goodell may be done regardless. The NFL has bad/no principles but it is wildly PR-conscious and there aren't enough pink shoes towels and gloves to wipe away a video of a guy left-hooking a girl into a metal handrail. Not to mention they already took a ton of deserved flak on this issue and now they're caught lying about not having seen the video until now.

I feel bad for Janay Palmer. Nothing worse than dissembling for and then marrying an abusive guy and then it turns out even the paychecks are probably going away. I wonder how much of that video is news to her, too, with the concussion etc.

You work at the NFL? ;)

edit: tweet from Ravens' account May 23rd: Janay Rice says she deeply regrets the role that she played the night of the incident.

I am a lousy gambler, but considering just how toxic he is and how old he is, I'd bet Rice never plays another snap.
Yeah NFL teams are in an even-good-RBs-are-replaceable (especially if they're old) mood, which is pretty clear when you look at how contracts and drafts have changed recently. If Rice were Adrian Peterson or something then things might be different, but he's not so after today and all the players going off etc. I think he's probably radioactive and out of the league.

Not disagreeing with this, but just to unpack that "NFL never saw the elevator video" TMZ story:

NFL lawyers came to the casino and saw it. The NFL didn't request a copy after that. Stories printed at the time acknowledges there was elevator video and the NFL saw it.

The NFL now claims they never saw it and weren't allowed to. That's the "smells like a cover-up" part. It sure looks like they saw it and then didn't want to have seen it and if the video never got out that probably would have worked out for them. Of course just burying Ray Rice from the start would also have "worked out" but clearly they were more concerned about people seeing an NFL guy slugging a girl than they were concerned about the other things one might normally be concerned about.

To be honest, just disconnect yourself from all teams. Watch the NFL game by game and cheer for whatever team you want on any given Sunday. I grew up a Steelers fan but at some point between dealing with the Roethlisberger rape allegations and the awful fans (not JUST Steelers fans, but Browns and especially Bengals fans) I decided it wasn't even worth it. I'm a lot happier now not really giving any fucks about the NFL and letting it entertain me whenever I please.
Yeah I root for a few teams but even if I managed to forget I'd soon be reminded that most professional athletes, especially pro football guys, aren't great people. But it's not a morality play, it's a sport.

Obviously doesn't matter but just out of curiosity, do we know what Ray and Janay were fighting about? I like to imagine it was about what ice cream flavor is the best or something.

Ray Rice chose a career where he would make millions of dollars but knew his career could end at a moment's notice and at a (relatively) young age. Why would ANYONE be whining about his earning potential?

Oh, right, because they're obnoxious contrarians.
Yeah I'm basically in the "poo poo happens" camp. I'll reserve sympathy for the guys who don't have the talent to get past the practice squad or whose bodies get broken before they get a payday, (and even those aren't exactly growing up in Somalia or with a terminal disease or what have you)... even if you want to claim Ray didn't "deserve" this, by any reasonable standard he hosed himself way more than the circumstances did.

So basically my wife (who pays attention to football to about the degree I pay attention to NASCAR, i.e. I know Stewart ran somebody over on a dirt track but that's about the only thing that has penetrated in the last few years) knew more about the event at the time than Goodell. Uh yeah okay.

edit: Actually in retrospect I think she only knew when the 2 game suspension came down but whatever

Most of this isn't a big deal in anything but a gossipy sense, he's a dummy and you can't expect him to be smooth in front of a microphone, but I forgot just how terrible his press conference with his wife was:

*looks at phone with talking points*
*apologizes to a lot of football people, his fans, and his kids*... wife is part of the problem from get-go
"Failure is not getting knocked down. It's not getting up." :stare:
*forgets what he's supposed to say next and scrolls the phone*, and says "sorry just want TO HIT ON EVERYTHING" :stare:
repeats "Failure is not getting knocked down. It's not getting up." :stare:
*apologizes to everyone again FOR him AND his wife*
*wife apologizes for her role*

Assuming he doesn't play in the NFL again (I wouldn't think it's too crazy if that happens considering his age and baggage), would Ray Rice continue to live under a microscope? Say, 5 years down the road, Ray Rice assaults Janay again, would the national stage even care? The whole situation has brought a lot to light with the NFL, but it's probably all for show.
Yeah I said when the tape came out that he wouldn't play in the NFL again, but while he won't live under a microscope it will definitely be news if he assaults Janay again (unless the word doesn't get out at all of course).
