All true, but Donald Sterling was also always awful and a damning piece of media can work wonders on public opinion/discourse.

I guess I wasn't as caught up with the legal stuff related to this case; would a lawyer-minded person mind explaining what the hell this whole "diversionary program" thing is that Rice got into to avoid a trial? Is it akin to what someone caught for drug possession would receive in order to work towards rehabilitation? Why would that kind of program exist for a violent crime?

Whirlwind Jones posted:The most interesting part of this whole thing isn't Ray Rice's future at all. It's the fact that the NFL apparently lied about seeing the video and if anything will eventually come of that. Either that or all these twitter-wielding journalists disseminated baseless facts about the case, two notions I am delighted to see exposed in such an embarrassing way.

OBR posted:I'm not really following how this video changes anything. We already had a video of him dragging a unconscious woman out of an elevator. Was it really unclear to anyone how she came to be unconscious in the elevator? Was there reasonable doubt that there was some kind of loss of air pressure during the ride? It's visceral and graphic and probably an unprecedented sight for most people. The Zapruder film is a huge part of collective memory of JFK's assassination. The story was already a significant historical event without it, but the film became an icon.

The Puppy Bowl posted:How are the Ravens? Why is it their job to fill in for our corrupt lovely legal system? I really don't like the idea of the league suspending anyone for issues that don't directly relate to football but wouldn't mind adding to Rice's suspension due to the nothing of a punishment he received. The Ravens are getting poo poo for unleashing their PR machine in such a way that attempted to diminish the gravity of Rice's actions.

Though it's been obvious forever, it's fascinating to see how the kind of cultural elevation of football competition over civic and moral responsibility that was shown in Bissinger's Friday Night Lights can be correlated from the high school level all the way up to the professionals. This is perhaps the most egregious, popular, and damning example of it that we've ever seen.

I certainly hope they do keep up with the moronic press conferences because the more examples we get of how tone-deaf the entire system is, the better our odds of enacting some form of change. Granted, 'change' is loaded and debatable and the status quo will likely proceed unmutilated.
