my hometown was overrun by old people with credit cards on their necklaces (for quicker swiping) and pawn shops after the casino came to town.

now, there are literally hundreds of "cafes" up and down the main route offering just slots. there are more of these cafes than all other businesses combined. the average income in the area is 18,900. i have no loving clue how anyone stays in business

Right? So they are poor therefore bad with money, save it by eating cat food for dinner, and have tons of time on their hands - perfect demographic.

could the illiterates in this thread stop for one second and realize that the OP is not a screed against gambling but rather pointing out that the state is leveraging addictive behaviors in its worst off populations to plug budget gaps?

Nah, I'm still lollin at the posters here that haven't sat at a card table in a casino but still weigh in.

Hi everyone,

I am a poor person that sometimes plays the lotto or buys scratchies. I guess I could buy booze with that little bit of disposable income I have (and I do!) but spending a bit of loose change on lottery tickets is an investment in hope I wouldn't otherwise have. But by all means mock and deride me for being poor and tossing the tiny amount of cash I have into a wishing well. I guess if I didn't buy lottery tickets I could put that small change into a jar and have a few hundred dollars after a couple of years, those savings could change my life in a way that a lucky $10,000 never could.

I hope they are. What I really need today, in between all the minor issues crushing poverty in a western nation thrusts upon me, is for some smug nerd to tell me what I already know about the odds of winning the lottery. I'll never be an actual person as long as tiny glimmer of hope that my stupid, poor and disabled arse might someday get lucky is out there. I felt ok when I woke up but what I super want to feel is like poo poo because some gently caress earning $70 an hour removing malware from their company's computers knows that the lottery is a tax on the stupid.

Liberia has a lottery too.
